Romans 3:28

Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

A person is justified by faith in Christ without the deeds of the law, not by doing works of the law or relying on works for salvation. Salvation belongs solely to God, is obtained through Jesus Christ, and rests on the grace of God given through faith, with righteousness given by God as a free gift. The sinner is made right before God through Christ's righteousness and cleansing, atoning blood, which brings pardon and peace and frees from bondage and condemnation. This calls for relying entirely on Christ's righteousness rather than on works of merit, since human effort cannot lessen the guilt of sin or secure salvation. Justification by faith does not exclude obedience, for obedience remains the believer's duty and flows from belonging to Christ, while the same person who is justified by faith is judged by works.

Justified by Faith Alone

Therefore the conclusion stands that a person is justified by faith in Christ without the deeds of the law, not by doing the works of the law and not by relying on works for salvation. Justification by faith in Christ is justification by faith without the deeds of the law. People are justified and saved through faith in Jesus Christ, not by their works, and not by their own works.

Salvation belongs solely to God, it is obtained through Jesus Christ, and it rests on the grace of God given through faith. Righteousness is given by God through grace and faith, and Christ's grace is a free gift. Salvation is obtained through Jesus Christ and rests on the grace of God.

The sinner is made right before God through Christ's righteousness and atoning blood. That cleansing blood cleanses from sin, brings pardon and peace, and points sin-burdened souls to pardon and peace. It frees the sinner from bondage and condemnation. This gospel truth guides repentant sinners to life and into the way of life.

The call is to rely entirely on Christ's righteousness rather than on works of merit. Human effort, humiliation, or penance cannot lessen the guilt of sin and cannot secure salvation. Salvation comes through repentance toward God and faith in Christ. Looking in faith to the crucified Redeemer brings peace and joy.

Faith, Obedience, and Judgment

Being justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law does not exclude obedience. Obedience remains the believer's duty and flows from belonging to Christ. Through faith in Christ the believer is enabled to live in humble obedience to God's commandments.

The same person who is justified by faith is judged by works. Judgment according to works does not set aside the doctrine of justification by faith. Justification by faith does not remove accountability for conduct, for at the general judgment each person is judged and rewarded according to faithfulness in the work entrusted to him.

Justification by faith does not excuse idleness but requires diligence and active work for the interests of God's kingdom with the household goods and capital entrusted to His servants. All are to be workers. Those with the greatest talent, largest means, and most abundant opportunity carry the heaviest burden of responsibility. Works are the only criterion by which human beings will be judged, and good or evil works will decide destiny for eternity, because good works are the sure and precious fruit of faith.

No one is sufficient of himself in the combat with the powers of darkness, and no one can at any time be independent of supernatural teaching. No one can take any part in justifying himself by his own works. All good works can be done only directly under heavenly influence, not of ourselves but of the Spirit of God through His divine agencies.

Receiving and Sharing Truth

The teaching that a person is justified by faith without the deeds of the law is light and truth to be received as light and truth by those who take the position of learners. Those dwelling in an atmosphere of doubt refuse to learn and quibble over little points of no consequence, showing a leavening spirit of unbelief. Justification by faith and the righteousness of Christ reveal the way of salvation and are essential gospel truths to be taught to children and youth.

Knowing the truth that people are justified and saved through faith in Jesus Christ, not by their works, did not immediately lead Luther to recognize all its implications about papal authority.

Justification by faith must hold a prominent place for any church to grow and stay healthy. Health, piety, and growth in grace come in proportion to humble dependence on the teaching and leading of divine agencies and cherished faith in the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit alone guides into all truth about the acceptance of a sinner with God. Without that divine guiding and teaching, people are led by deceptive spirits and evil angels claiming to be angels of light into error on justification.
