Romans 3:4
God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
God remains altogether true and right even when every person proves false and untrustworthy, and He will be shown righteous in all He has spoken and will prevail when His ways are called into question. The unbelief, denial, and contradiction of men cannot cancel His faithfulness, rub out His testimony, or force any retraction or change to suit human judgment. His word and foundation stand firm and immovable forever, carrying absolute authority that ends all controversy in heaven and earth. Therefore no human counsel or wisdom is to be made the dependence or treated as His voice, but in every circumstance the written word alone is to be trusted and met against assault. He will do what He has said, bringing Christ to judge in flaming fire and assembling the whole universe to see His law vindicated, His name glorified, and His wisdom acknowledged just by believers and unbelievers alike.
Faithful God Despite Unbelief
The declaration stands that God remains true even if every human being proves false, vindicated in what He speaks and victorious when His dealings are called into question. Human unbelief, even on the part of many, cannot empty God's faithfulness of its force or cancel its effect. Some may refuse to believe, yet their refusal does not make the faithfulness of God void.
That refusal is seen in the history of the Jews as the chosen nation, entrusted as keepers of His holy oracles, truths of highest worth like a pearl of great price. They were meant to be faithful stewards in whom the Lord could delight and whom He could make the praise of the whole earth, but they did not value the sacred trust committed to them. Instead they transgressed the law and broke the covenant, despising the riches of His goodness and forbearance and long-suffering that leads to repentance, and so treasured up wrath for themselves.
God's Word Stands Forever
God's foundation stands sure, and His word stands forever, true though every human word against it is false. What He has revealed and written on the soul stands true and firm as if embedded in rock forever, immovable against all human opposition and gainsaying, though every man speaks against it as false. No human argument, opposition, experience, wisdom, assertion, position, doctrine, or influence can contradict, dispute, rub out, change, alter, or make of none effect what He has shown to be truth, even when it comes from leading brethren and the best and wisest men exalted to influence in whom confidence was once placed, and when they take false positions their words are vain. That revealed truth is in harmony with the living oracles and the Scriptures, and it can only be gainsaid and denied by wresting the Scriptures from their true meaning by misapplying and misinterpreting them. Faithfulness therefore requires more decided repetition of the truth and standing on the revealed light with all strength given, while those convinced of past false exercises from deception by false excitement and fanaticism must not let error be held before them to make them afraid of spiritual exercise, must not give up earnest fervent prayer to God for special aid and victory, and must not be driven to cold formality and unbelief, but their only safety is to plant their feet upon the platform of truth, to see and understand the third angel's message, and to prize, love, and obey the truth for this time.
His testimony regarding His law carries absolute authority, because it is the word of Him who spoke as never man spoke. That word is law throughout the universe, and it is the end of all controversy in heaven and earth.
God will do what He has said even when every man denies it. He is true in His promise that Christ will come in flaming fire to take vengeance on and punish sinners who know not God and obey not His gospel. His delay in coming is infinite mercy to give the world a larger span for repentance and more time to repent, not proof He will never come. Sinners who flatter themselves that He will never come because of the delay make themselves liars against God's truth.
The verse points to the final judgment held in the presence of the world in which God will be judged and overcome. There the law of His government will be vindicated, His name glorified, and His wisdom acknowledged and testified as just by believers and unbelievers. This vindication is not the judgment of one person or of one nation but of a whole world of intelligent beings of all orders and all characters. It takes place first upon the dead, then upon the living, with the whole universe finally assembled to hear the sentence.
Trust God Above Man
Let God be true though every opposing human word is false, so no human counsel can countermand His counsel, no human judgment override the light He has given, and no vindication, explanation, or repeated statement without retraction or confession that contradicts it can dispute it, rub it out, change it, or alter it. Nothing in His testimony is to be retracted, altered, or varied to agree with man, and human words must not be treated as His voice, for His Word stands forever true and sure. This requires having no change to make, making no concession to human contradiction, and holding the testimony He has given as the final word unless He Himself gives a varying representation. Excuses made to follow strong imagination and to cast His direction aside as a mistake must be rejected, because He knows the end from the beginning. Refusing the light He gives brings trouble and a galling yoke of perplexity, while accepting what He sends saves much heavy cost in the end.
The verse teaches to make not flesh our arm but to depend in every case and under every circumstance on His word, meeting the enemy's assault with the written word as Christ did with It is written rather than with argument or reasoning. God alone is trustworthy while every human agency is untrustworthy and must not be made our dependence. He is dishonored when men are placed where He should be and when His children go to human beings for help only He can give. Unconverted humanity especially cannot be trusted, because people allow circumstances to change them, live in unbelief instead of Christ's righteousness, and their wisdom is foolishness with Him, and a man may be deceived and in ignorance or inexperience may mislead by his words even when he supposes he speaks truth.
His foundation stands sure and His word is true though every human word is false, even when believers have been deceived by false excitement and fanaticism. Those convinced of past false exercises must not let error be held before them to make them afraid of spiritual exercise, must not give up earnest fervent prayer to Him for special aid and victory, and must not be driven to cold formality and unbelief. Their only safety is to plant their feet upon the platform of truth, to see and understand the third angel's message, and to prize, love, and obey the truth for this time. He remains true and right even when human beings prove false, as His patient treatment of Judas shows: the betrayer’s fate restrained some from harming the disciples, and after the resurrection and ascension the disciples gained courage and many were converted, for Christ remains at the helm and is with His followers to the end. He is true even when people misrepresent or falsely accuse someone, and being misunderstood and falsified can accompany faithful service, so the one mistreated must cling more closely to Jesus and respond with patience, kindness, and good rather than evil.
The verse condemns denying true reproof about disparaging the gospel ministry, and it makes those who agree with that denial responsible for assenting to what is not true. He is true to His word and His word is the true measure of work done for Him, correcting human reckoning that puts relation to His work on a mercenary foundation of so much work for so much pay and supposes man's services are invaluable. When He is held true to His word there is a great change in that estimate, correcting selfish grasping for reward and craving for high wages.
