Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
The record that righteousness was credited to Abraham was written not for his sake alone but also for later believers. He received that credit because he did not waver at God's promises through unbelief but remained strong in faith, gave glory to God, and was fully convinced that what God had promised He was able also to perform. The record was preserved for the instruction of later believers, for their learning, so that through patience and the encouragement of the Scriptures they might have hope. It belongs to the wider teaching that faith in Christ enables human nature to lay hold of the divine nature and overcome.
Righteousness will likewise be credited to later believers if they believe on God who raised Jesus the Lord from the dead. Jesus was handed over for offenses and raised again for justification, so that those justified by faith have peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ. Under present precious opportunities believers are to grow in faith, and when seeming impossibilities bar the way they are not to fail nor become discouraged but to affirm that God is able, and then the same credit will be given to them.
