Romans 4:25

Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Jesus was delivered over to death for human offenses, taking the debt of sin upon Himself as though responsible for it and making full atonement for it. He was raised again for justification, with every charge against Him cancelled and the captive loosed by the decree of heaven. Justification comes through the merits of the crucified and risen Saviour, and when His righteousness is received by reliance on Him in faith it becomes the believer's righteousness so that he stands justified before God. Because Christ died and rose, a sinner may accept promised forgiveness and be saved now, and everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life and peace with God. His death purchases salvation and reconciles believers to God, while His risen life lives to intercede for them and brings their salvation to completion as it is lived out in them.

Christ's Death and Resurrection

Who was delivered for our offences means Jesus was given over to death because of human offenses, becoming responsible for the debt of human sin and dying under its imputation to make full atonement for it. He Himself carried the sins of the whole world, and He made no mortal a sin-bearer for others, because no person can bear the weight of even his own sins. The crucified One bore them all alone.

He was raised for justification, with every charge against Him cancelled. By the decrees of heaven the captive was loosed, and the Father alone could release Him, sending the Captain of the Lord's host to relieve Him from the debt. Nothing piled over His sepulcher could prevent Him from coming forth, so He came from Joseph's broken tomb glorified and proclaimed in triumph that He is the resurrection and the life. The glorified risen One is the same man who stood lacerated by the scourge before Pilate and Herod, was crowned with thorns and robed in purple, was nailed to the cross while priests and rulers mocked, and was laid in the tomb.

His death purchases salvation and reconciles believers to God, while His risen life lives to intercede for them. That risen life brings their salvation to completion as it is lived out in them and formed in their character through obedience. Through Him believers possess an immortal inheritance and life that endures forever.

Justification by Faith Applied

Justification comes through the merits of the crucified and risen Saviour, for He was crucified and raised, and acceptance before God comes by relying on those merits. When His righteousness is received by reliance on Him in faith it becomes the believer's righteousness, and the believer then stands justified before God. Accepting His salvation and submitting the will to Him brings that justification. Through His overcoming in human nature, humanity can by faith grasp the divine nature and share in it.

What was written of Abraham applies also to believers, for righteousness will be imputed to those who believe on God who raised Jesus from the dead. As Abraham staggered not at the promises of God through unbelief but was strong in faith, giving glory to God and fully persuaded that what God promised He was able to perform, so it is with those who believe. Because He died for sinners and rose again for their justification, having been delivered to death because of human offenses, a sinner may accept His promised forgiveness and be saved now rather than remain unsaved. Through Him even the unworthy are invited to come to Christ for life and to bring petitions to God's throne of grace and receive spiritual blessings.

Every soul who believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life, for He was crucified to bear sins and was raised from the broken tomb to provide justification. Being justified by faith, believers have peace with God through Jesus Christ. Faith says God is able even when seeming impossibilities bar the way, so believers must not fail nor be discouraged but increase in faith under present opportunities. This death and resurrection is the wonderful love of God made manifest in Christ, which is the science and song of all the heavenly universe. The risen Jesus now waits to receive homage, and this should call forth gratitude and praise and the giving of self to Him in return.

The Spirit of God leads the impenitent with inexpressible solicitude and gracious pleading to the feet of Jesus. All who receive Christ by faith should express their love to Him before the world just as truly as His love has been expressed to those for whom He died. His suffering and agony on the cross is the price of redemption, the ransom found so that sinners are delivered from going down to perish eternally. Because He has redeemed every part of being and everything possessed, the debt owed to Him cannot be computed, for all is already His. Therefore those He justified owe Him themselves and all they have, to present themselves as His servants and use all entrusted means for His name's glory in saving men, women, and children and preaching the gospel to every creature.
