Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dies no more means death has no more dominion or rule over Him, for He rose as a triumphant, victorious conqueror never to die again and lives forever a resurrection-life. He was raised from the dead by divine power. His resurrection opened a way of salvation for humanity.
Those united to Him, abiding in Him and joined to Him, become partakers with Him of that freed resurrection-life and will live with Him in the likeness of His resurrection. Believers share in this through baptism into His death, being buried with Him on profession of faith in Jesus Christ, with coming up out of the water as the symbol of resurrection. Baptism is an open renunciation of sin before witnesses, showing deadness to the reigning power of sin, a semblance of death to the world, its fashions, its customs, and its evil practices. In that union the believer experiences in his own person the same divine power that raised Christ, and has in Him the power of life.
As He died to sin once and now lives to God, believers are to reckon themselves dead to sin and alive to God through Jesus Christ, dead to the world but alive to Christ and alive unto God, walking in newness of life. The old life is crucified and the body of sin destroyed so they no longer serve sin, and being dead with Christ frees from sin, so sin must not reign in the mortal body nor be obeyed in its lusts, members must not be yielded as instruments of unrighteousness but yielded to God as alive from the dead for righteousness, for sin shall not have dominion because believers are under grace and not under law. To abide in Christ is to learn what it means to be crucified with Him, with Christ formed within as the hope of glory and glorified in the life.
The change grace works subdues sin's controlling desires, uproots and casts away perverted appetites and passions, ends enslavement to passion and bondage and defilement of sin, never glossing over sin, and calls for self-denial and control of the passions. By constant dependence on Him and whole surrender to Him for service, the likeness of His character is stamped on the heart by His Spirit, the heart is filled with divine love, the mind sanctified and guarded, the heart gladdened by rich promises, and the truth sanctifies the soul to reveal purity in a daily life of purity and holiness, fitting the person for heaven and its holy company, with clinging to Him giving power to become sons of God and power to gain victory over sin. The verse belongs to the call to teach the knowledge of salvation, sin, and redemption from sin's bondage and defilement. Only in that union can a person do the telling work for the establishment of His kingdom that no one else can do, and only then wear the crown of life, with the end eternal life through Jesus Christ instead of death as the wages of sin.
