A Man Pushing Away the Law Boulderby IpswichSDA

Romans 7:6

But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.

Being delivered from the law means being released through Christ from the law's hold in the former sinful condition. The purpose of that release is to serve God in a new spiritual life rather than by the old letter, not merely obeying its written form. This new service comes through union with Christ in his death and resurrection so that believers bring forth fruit to God, with grace through faith ending sin in the heart and making the service possible.

The law reveals sin and condemns the transgressor, but it cannot remove guilt or grant pardon, and it is sin rather than the law that brings death. The law itself is holy and good and acts as a schoolmaster that exposes the sinner's need to repent and look to Christ as the sin-bearing Saviour for the remedy.
