Kneeling Man Receiving the Spirit of Christby KandD
8:10Romans 8:10
And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Romans 8 belongs to light for those seeking to be fully converted, with the Holy Spirit applying the truth about Jesus to the understanding. When Christ dwells in a person the body remains subject to death because of sin, while the Spirit is life because of righteousness, that is right standing with God. Sin affects the entire being and grace affects the entire being.
Christ dwells in the heart by faith, by His Spirit dwelling in the believer as an abiding principle and as a real, present, co-working Divinity. The Spirit of Christ within is a vitalizing power like blood circulating through the body, giving spiritual life and strength. The soul derives nourishment from Christ as the physical body is nourished by food, and by that nourishment is strengthened until it partakes of the divine nature and, with Christ as the Bread of Life, grows up into the full stature of men and women in Christ.
This indwelling life is joined to knowing Christ through experience, receiving pardon for sin, and being born again, and is revealed in deeds and works of righteousness that mark the person as born again. A spirit of contention is contrary to representing true godliness. Seeking the glory of God in all that is done comes through Christ dwelling within, meaning being cleansed, renewed, sanctified, and made in character like Christ.
The indwelling gives a full sense of dependence on God, stirs helpless human nature by divine manifestation, and transforms people to be pure and true and holy, so that the weary soul cries out for the living God and for the Comforter. Those who remain in the flesh and are led by the flesh rather than by the Spirit fail to please God, do the works of Satan, cut themselves loose from God so He cannot cooperate with them, and grow constantly worse in character defects and unfit to serve Him, while those who have the Spirit of Christ belong to Him with the sin-dominated mortal nature brought to an end. God will give life to mortal bodies and quicken the mortal body through His indwelling Spirit.
The inner presence of Christ's life and Spirit gives spiritual life and enables effective service as a co-working power in all work given to do, and without the Spirit and power of God a minister can accomplish little by preaching. To discard this indwelling from mind and theory for human philosophizing, inventions, and plans is to trust men and make flesh an arm, to endure a climate without the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness, and to be taken captive in defiance of God.
