Romans 8:17

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Those who are children of God are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, members of the royal family and children of the heavenly King. Their inheritance is immortal, incorruptible, undefiled and unfading, an eternal weight of glory including mansions, a home in heaven, restoration to Eden, a seat on his throne, a crown of life and the earth made new free from sorrow, sickness and death. Sinners become such children and heirs by receiving Christ by faith as personal Saviour, repenting and being pardoned, justified, regenerated and adopted, a sonship Christ purchased at infinite cost by clothing divinity with humanity and suffering and dying to restore God's image. Sharing his glory and inheritance is conditional on sharing his sufferings, for only those who suffer with him in self-denial, obedience and service will be glorified together with him. This heirship belongs to the obedient who keep his commandments and are led by the Spirit, and it is confirmed by inward witness, character and conduct as its fruit.

Children Heirs with Christ

Those who are children of God are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, members of the royal family and children of the heavenly King, belonging to His kingdom. Converted from sin to holiness they belong to that royal family regardless of social position, wealth or race, for there is no caste in heaven. Sharing that inheritance includes suffering with Him in this life in order to be glorified together with Him, and that coming glory far outweighs present suffering.

Receiving the Spirit of adoption and being led by the Spirit makes men sons and confirms adoption, giving inward witness that they are children and heirs. That witness is confirmed by the Word and by character and conduct as its fruit, and gives hope for present and future with assurance of covenant keeping. The Spirit's presence and Christ's grace in the heart confirm this kinship, and those who serve with right principles and a kindly, converted, humble spirit receive that witness with angels ministering with them to build up the kingdom.

The promise belongs to obedient, true and pure children who keep faith in Jesus and keep hold on God in a world marred and corrupted by sin, not to disloyal subjects. For them a kingdom prepared before the foundation of the world is given by the Father's good pleasure, in which Christ Himself is the portion and inheritance. Being heirs means having the same life as Jesus, partaking His divine nature, being one with Him in His perfection and one with Him and His people, yoked up with Him as overcomers to enjoy the kingdom of His grace on earth and share His kingdom of glory in heaven. Those who acknowledge loyalty to God are heirs, and Jesus Christ was appointed heir of all things and given the work of making a home for man, the world in which people are tested and tried.

Those led by the Spirit as sons stand directly under God's control with individual responsibility for conduct, time, mind and conscience. No mortal, whether youth or man, teacher or ruler, however learned, experienced or high in responsibility, can make a line for another to walk, command what he shall do or not do, or hold his mind under domination. The human mind is God's property, God has a wider outlook for each life than men can discern, and there is one Master, Jesus Christ, to whom every heart and mind is to be lifted.

Those who belong to Christ are children and joint-heirs sharing kingdom, dominion and future glory, yet like Christ without outward riches or splendor they face humiliation and reproach while their adoption into God's family and fellowship with the Father and Son remain unseen. The world does not recognize who they are, what they will become, or the motives that guide them, understands not their character and holy calling, and perceives not their adoption. Though seen by the world as weak, unpopular, sorrowful and despised, they are precious to God, and the hope of seeing Christ and being made like Him when He appears leads them to purify themselves.

Being one with Christ in God does not destroy individual personality; through sanctification by the truth believers become heirs to a glorious inheritance, one with Christ as Christ is one with God. Through faith as personal Saviour and through His prayer and intercession they are brought into close living union, with life hid with Christ in God, loved by the Father as the Father loved the Son, redeemed by the Lamb's blood and identified as His remnant with His law in the heart. They are called to receive an immortal inheritance and to reign as kings and priests, sharing His humiliation and suffering to share His glory and bear His name's dignity. Sonship binds believers to Christ, to God and to one another with no walls of separation, in sympathy that uplifts the lowly and in holy brotherly love. Given every advantage of redeeming power as branches of the parent stock to bear fruit, it forbids proud, partial and exclusive spirit, crowding, pushing and dissension.

To be child, heir and joint-heir is of great weight and awe, meaning every reasoning son and daughter of Adam may be elevated, ennobled and sanctified, hold converse with God, have God's moral image developed, and come into immortality running parallel with Jehovah's life as long as God lives, showing the value God places on humanity. Every believer in Jesus, even the humblest and lowliest, is accepted as child and heir with standing so firm that God will no more cast him off than demolish His own throne. Though occupying a humble place with no riches, comforts or earthly enjoyments, the poor in earthly goods can be rich in faith with full standing and title to a home in heaven and eternal life, for poverty is not sin and does not bar heirship. A person of true faith and moral worth though poor and despised is valuable to God and fit for angels, above earthly wealth, titles and honor, as shown by despised Lazarus exalted among angels for moral soundness, while human honor and approval become insignificant beside standing in Christ.

All who believe in Christ as personal Saviour and are converted from sin to holiness are children of the heavenly King with no caste of high or low, rich or poor, black or white, ignorant outcast, heathen, European, slave, red man, Chinaman or African. Being His by creation and redemption, bought with a price with cleansing blood applied to all who believe, birth, station, nationality or color cannot elevate or degrade, and character alone makes the man. Jesus loves none less for color and calls him well-beloved brother, with names written side by side in the book of life, and the humblest laying hold on hope will be exalted above earth's kings to walk with Him in white as worthy brethren. Those adopted through covenant share an exalted position belonging wholly to God, marked as His own; though the world may reject them and cast out their names as evil they belong to heaven with names in the book of life, marked by tribulation and cleansing through the Lamb's blood rather than earthly prosperity or worldly approval.

Those who receive Christ are regarded as children and heirs in Christ, not as in Adam. When a soul approaches God as Father heaven becomes home with assurance of life guaranteed by the Creator, joined to the redeemed family by a tie that cannot be broken. Restored as children of Abraham through His name and merits, made at one with the Father by faith, they have gladness in God Himself, peace and restfulness filling the heart and lighting the countenance, which is Christ's joy in the soul. Those accepted in Christ are loved by God with the same love with which He loves His Son. God's acceptance of Christ's atonement and the honor given Him extend to them, Christ standing between God and them revealing glory, covering defects and transgressions with spotless righteousness, reckoning their sins to Himself and imputing His righteousness to them, so they share His rights, victories and eternal life and overcome as He overcame.

The Father's matchless love brings sinners and aliens back to adoption as sons who may call Him Our Father as sign of affection and pledge of tender care. The Son owns receivers as brethren without shame, a relation even more sacred than that of angels who never fell. When Christ as King invites the blessed to inherit the kingdom He opens infinite love to fallen men and women, appoints them heirs and blends them with His nature, making them irreversibly blessed beyond human opinion, favor, hatred or curse. God's wondrous provision widens ideas of His love by counting the true and pure who love and obey His words as royal children sharing inheritance, binding hearts to Him and making believers delight in service. The privileges of sons far exceed worldly advantages, including precious experience, a work from God, higher sense of eternal things, nearness to wholehearted callers, and enduring as seeing the Invisible.

The chapter containing the verse is urged for families to read, showing children are precious to God who permitted His only-begotten Son to be crucified to save them. Possessing sacred, elevating truth with Christ dwelling within through the Spirit is connected with this privilege of heirship. A joint-heir belongs to God and shares Christ's love, which gives greater worth than human approval or worldly pleasures and makes human contempt and opposition insignificant. Even when treated with contempt, defamation, imprisonment, mobs or killing, those Jesus owns are honored among angels and must live by faith valuing divine honor and promised reward above earthly gain, though the world recognizes them not as it recognized Him not. God's children as heirs have an unbreakable bond with the redeemed family to an immortal, eternal inheritance, sharing suffering before glorification; being a child brings privilege of sharing heavenly inheritance but self must yield to His control in taking up the cross and following in self-denial.

Inheritance Eternally Described

The inheritance is immortal, incorruptible, undefiled and unfading, an eternal substance and eternal weight of glory that cannot perish, be defiled, fade or be destroyed. It includes mansions and a home in heaven, restoration to the Eden home, a seat upon Christ's throne, a crown of life, the first dominion, and the earth made new free from sorrow, sickness, disappointment and death. Those who overcome through faith in his blood are forgiven and justified and restored as though humanity had never fallen, carrying out God's original purpose to pardon fully, crown as joint-heirs, and enthrone with him. Even the lowliest disciple who accepts Christ may become an inhabitant of heaven and heir to this secure inheritance belonging to the better world.

The verse points to the heavenly country and its unsearchable riches as the hope toward which God's word guides his children of the royal family. Through him they are entitled to unsearchable riches and eternal weight of glory, an honor from God that lasts unlike earthly praise and rank and makes earthly wealth insignificant by comparison. Through Jesus' merits finite beings are granted fellowship with God and his Son and raised to high dignity greater than any other granted to humanity. The riches of Christ and heaven's unsearchable riches and weight of glory made available to them far surpass worldly wealth, and heaven's peace is theirs if they follow God's word.

Being children together with Christ brings possession of God's gifts to man, partaking of the eternal riches of heavenly treasure and entering the eternal weight of glory with this God as their own God forever and ever, so his perfections and displays of glory are to be called to mind every day. Through Christ people may become heirs to all that belongs to him which he came offering, for all Christ is belongs to true believers and all he has is for them. Those lifted from the depths of sin through Christ may be acknowledged as children and heirs with Christ to an immortal inheritance which is eternal life and union with God, a life that measures with the life of God. Members of the heavenly family hold the treasures of heaven, a life free from sin, sickness, sorrow and death, and will not follow worldly ambition and madness to heap up earthly treasures at loss of Christian character, because character secures that eternal life.

Those adopted into God's family through Christ's ransom are heirs of God and joint-heirs sharing an imperishable inheritance, imperishable riches, salvation, lasting honor and immortal treasure. Following Christ may weaken earthly friendships, but giving up error, darkness, sin, perishable things and temporary earthly standing for truth, righteousness and lasting honor is no real sacrifice, for the honor far outweighs any loss of worldly friendships or possessions. One may be heir to unsearchable riches and treasures in heaven beyond computation, Christ's peace of highest value, and a home in the mansions he has gone to prepare for obedient children, in contrast to a life spent seeking worldly gain that is never realized and never succeeds. This calls for readiness to meet him in peace as time hastens and the end comes soon, with all activity, zeal, capability and talent sanctified and employed in good works bringing gold and silver and precious stones and not hay, wood and stubble to the foundation.

Heaven is the free-gift inheritance to be received as heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ by working out salvation with fear and trembling because God works within to will and do his good pleasure. Receiving it requires constant appreciation of God's all-comprehending goodness at all times and in all places, honoring the Lord in all done or said, and serving as his messengers in winning souls to Christ. Becoming a child through Christ makes one heir to an immortal inheritance, an eternal possession in God's kingdom, and even the lowliest disciple may receive an incorruptible inheritance secure from destruction. This promised future life should shape education and home religion toward choosing heavenly things over the world and cultivating love, religion, obedience and purity, for the heavenly mansions are for those true and pure who love and obey his words.

The humble child has promise of heirship to riches that will endure and glory that will never cease to brighten with the progress of ages, in contrast to all human greatness and the glory of conquerors, poets and philosophers which perishes and passes to dust. It means immortal life running parallel with Jehovah's life, given through a change wrought in the affections bringing the heir into harmony with the will of the Controller of the universe. The heirship includes having the name enrolled by angels in heaven's record book and mansions prepared for reception, to be entered when the Lord of life and glory appears the second time without sin unto salvation. Membership in the royal family as child of the heavenly King is greater riches than being a millionaire in this world, because earthly riches can be made very poor in a moment and at death are left for heirs to quarrel over, while heirs have eternal weight of glory laid up. It means hiding life with Christ in God, overcoming even as he overcame, and following in the Redeemer's footsteps as co-laborers in saving souls, working with means and voice to sustain his cause through self-denial and cross-bearing.

God's children receive imperishable riches and a home in the earth made new, including living with Christ, taking possession of the renewed earth, building houses, and planting and enjoying vineyards. The Bible as guidebook tells what is truth and what must be done to inherit eternal life, turning attention from temporal interests to spiritual realities, and promises fallen sinful people elevation to stand as princes and kings in heavenly courts sharing divine inheritance together with Christ. Those who follow on to know the Lord are joint-heirs to eternal treasure, immortal inheritance, crown of everlasting life and unsearchable riches of heaven, made known by the Bible as light guiding footsteps homeward toward the highest standard. The inheritance is worth consecration of highest capabilities and is secured by advancing in a safe sure path, with God's peace day by day and by faith a home of everlasting sunshine free from sorrow and disappointment as God directs footsteps and keeps from falling.

Riches means possession of a valuable Christlike character that gives welcome as members of the royal family as heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, for the Son clothed divinity with humanity and left heavenly home and riches and for human sake became poor that through his poverty humans might be made rich. That character is gained by beholding Christ and dwelling upon things pure and clean and lovely which changes the beholder, and to keep the mind fresh, clean and uplifted for this change requires a persevering course of training. The sinner may become child and heir, rising from dust to stand arrayed in garments of light, by beholding Jesus by faith as ever-present help in need, thereby transformed, made partaker of divine nature, and reflecting his image. The verse gives title deed as heir of God and joint-heir with Christ to an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled and unfading, so sleepless worry over earthly life insurance papers is needless.

God takes responsibility for every soul wearing the sign of his government by being loyal and true to the Sabbath, and through obedience to the Sabbath true to every principle of the Decalogue. Every member of the family circle may become heir to that unfading inheritance through plain simple home instruction presenting sanctification, because without holiness no one can see the Lord, and those privileged with the Word yet disregarding its precepts will be weighed and found wanting. God's sons hold title to an inheritance which Satan seeks to beguile away by offering the kingdom of this world on condition of acknowledging his supremacy, requiring sacrifice of integrity, disregard of conscience, and indulgence of selfishness and living for self. He allures with hope of worldly dominion, riches, pleasures, honor and happiness while gaining dominion over the soul, yet what he offers is not his to bestow and will soon be wrested from him, in contrast to Christ who refused to be bought, came to establish righteousness, and bids seek first God's kingdom and righteousness.

Salvation through Christ makes people heirs of God and heirs with him to eternal inheritance, partakers of divine nature and heirs of all things with Christ. Trading that privilege for worldly gain loses sight of life's high aims, and living only for this world within personal convenience is a serious mistake, nor does another's wrongdoing excuse neglect of one's own duty before God. Being joint-heir with Christ is no humiliation but shares an incorruptible, undefiled, unfading inheritance. This hope brings comfort of his presence now and future blessedness when his people see the King in beauty, receive reward according to works, and remain with him forever.

How Sinners Become Heirs

People become heirs by accepting Christ as Redeemer, exercising living faith in his righteousness and merits, repenting and confessing sin, being pardoned and justified, being adopted as sons and daughters, being regenerated, and beholding him so as to be transformed. Those who trust and love God as children are accepted as sons and daughters and become heirs to the glory of the eternal world, walking in obedience to his will and learning the lessons of his providence until welcomed into the heavenly home he has prepared. The repenting, believing sinner to whom the righteousness of Christ is imputed becomes a member of the royal family and child of the heavenly King, which is God's remedy for transgression received when the sinner comes in faith, takes hold of his merits, lays sins upon the Sin-bearer, and receives pardon through repentance toward God and faith in Christ. Guilty rebels can through obedience made possible by his grace become children and members of the royal family sharing a life that measures with the life of God.

Through God's gift of Christ the sinner may receive salvation and become heir and joint-heir, and through his sacrifice sinners may receive needed aid, for God having given his Son to bear the world's sins will withhold no needed help from those who accept salvation. As soon as a person, even an aged man going down into the grave, receives Christ as Saviour he becomes a child of God with all privileges of sonship. He is then claimed as a subject of the kingdom prepared before the foundation of the world and given by the Father's good pleasure to all who love him and keep his commandments, kept by God's power with rest in the Saviour's love and hope of a home when the earthly tabernacle fails, his life hid with Christ in God until Christ who is his life appears to call him from the tomb to live because Christ lives.

Those who receive Christ by faith as personal Saviour are given power to become sons of God and are made heirs and joint-heirs, and through his prayer on earth and intercession in heaven true followers are brought into close living union, being one with him as he is one with God, showing the value he places on those who receive and believe. The Saviour's power makes those who submit to God's will members of the royal family. Those who receive him as Redeemer through faith become children sharing the inheritance with Christ.

Those adopted through faith are pardoned, given sanctification and holiness for service, and prepared for immortal inheritance in his kingdom. Through faith in Christ and his righteousness Christians become one in Christ and distinct from the world, united to witness through good works that lead others to glorify God. Those who belong to Christ through faith are united with him and distinguished from the world by their faith.

Those who receive Christ become children and joint-heirs through the new covenant, which brings every blessing heaven can give for this life and the life to come and is ratified by his blood. Bread and wine keep his sacrifice before believers as given for each person as part of fallen humanity. Those who trust and love God as children are guided as the meek are guided and taught his way, so that those who obey may look for welcome into the heavenly home he has prepared.

Believers are made heirs through relationship with Christ, not human inventions, to a glorious inheritance reserved in heaven for those who love God, the kingdom it is the Father's good pleasure to give, promised to Abraham and his seed and to every believing soul, including mansions Christ prepares, a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory where the Lord is their portion. Obtaining it requires believing in Christ as personal Saviour, receiving and believing his words, complying with conditions laid down, obeying the laws of his kingdom, revealing and resembling his character to the world, giving proof of faith, and being one with him here to be one hereafter, while those who do not comply lose eternal life.

Those made children through Christ become joint-heirs to immortal inheritance, and even the most sinful lifted from degradation can be acknowledged as children. Those who have lived in rebellion can still choose Christ as Saviour and become children and heirs of glory. Through genuine conversion the repentant confessing sinner is not only forgiven but becomes a child, member of the royal family, and heir and joint-heir to immortal inheritance, with Satan's power broken. By beholding Christ he is changed into his image and brought into sacred unity, made one with him and completely identified with him, sharing all that Christ is, so that joyfully partaking his sufferings in tribulation leads to partaking his glory hereafter.

When a sinner is converted he receives the Holy Spirit making him a child and joint-heir fit for companionship with the redeemed and angels. All who give themselves to Christ and hear truth and obey become children of one family, whether ignorant or wise, rich or poor, heathen or slave, white or black, because Jesus paid the purchase money for every soul and his cleansing blood is applied when they believe, with each name written side by side in the book of life, so that birth, station, nationality and color cannot elevate or degrade and character alone makes the man. Christ died that sinners might live and is their strength and sufficiency, and receiving him gives power to become royal members and heirs to far more exceeding glory for those who fight manfully against evil. Contemplating that love should melt, subdue and break the heart, fill it with love, patience, longsuffering, kindness, meekness and benevolence, and lead to death to self.

Becoming sons happens by mutual ingrafting, with sinners coming in faith while Christ grafts them into his life and character, which is adoption on his part. By that union they become partakers of the divine nature having escaped corruption through lust, separated from the world so they no longer love vile society, but dead to sin and alive to God, bearing fruit in love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness and goodness, with new affections and tastes where old things pass away and all things become new. Receiving Christ brings adoption as loyal and true sons and daughters through unchanging love continuing unto the end, never fluctuating or disappointing, and whether a person is adopted depends on personal choice to receive him.

Accepting him as personal Saviour makes one born of God, so that simple sincere prayers offered at once when difficulty comes are presented by Christ mingled with the fragrance of his Spirit and wholly accepted to enlighten, purify, transform and strengthen moral and spiritual power. Those who receive Christ are adopted into the royal family through oneness in obedience to all commandments and walking in his footsteps, a union calling for self-denial and self-sacrifice with no cause for regret, because heaven's Commander resigned his position and clothed divinity with humanity that humanity might lay hold on humanity and divinity grasp the throne of the Infinite to perfect redemption.

The sinner may become child and heir, rising from dust to stand in garments of light, through being transformed by beholding Jesus and partaking the divine nature, advancing step by step to see new beauties and become more like him in character. Man though a child of earth may become a man of power and heir of immortality through grace Christ died to impart, God valuing men so highly as to give his Son to redeem them, with no other creature capable of such improvement, refinement, nobility and constant mental progress. When truth shines into the mind and love is shed abroad in the heart, grace lifts from blunting debasement by passion and vice into elevated, ennobled, sanctified character fitted for immortality.

A soul bought by his blood is capable through his provisions of becoming child and heir to immortal inheritance and eternal substance in God's kingdom, so yielding to temptations and foolish hurtful lusts is beneath such dignity. Continuing that course leads toward perdition, sacrificing health and happiness and reaping a terrible harvest. Being heir comes with full surrender bringing saving faith into vital relationship and identification with the Saviour, resting in love, committing the soul to a faithful Creator, having sacred freedom, and living in truth with truth living within, revealed in patience, long-suffering, courtesy, goodness, purity, sanctification and holy dignity as those who live by faith of the Son of God enriched with heavenly endowment.

Those who believe are received by adoption with hope of eternal life, standing before God clothed in Christ's righteousness not their own goodness. The Lord intends every believer to grow in favor with God and man through moral transformation by which the sinner is made child, heir of heaven and joint-heir. Believers become children through spiritual adoption and are called to represent him by living in conformity to his will. Becoming children is a privilege for which parents and youth should give thanks, belonging to his royal family and kingdom, with early years a time to prepare.

The sons and daughters of Adam are adopted through faith when they walk in all his commandments, and through obedience to all requirements are made more than conquerors. Their obedience rebukes evil works of disobedient men and, because Satan hated the law, transgressed it and lost heaven, stirs his worst opposition to allure them from narrow holiness into broad sin. People divorced from God receive another trial because Christ was crucified, rose, appeared, ascended escorted by myriads, and received assurance at the Father's throne that his sacrifice bridged the gulf, so that receiving him as sin-pardoning Saviour brings sharing inheritance together with Christ.

Even the most downtrodden, poor and sinful he died to save can become heirs and share heirship as trophies of grace through purifying, sanctifying faith, for true religion never degrades but refines taste, sanctifies judgment and fits the soul to receive the life-giving Word. Through painstaking labor those humble enough to learn are so transformed that even worldly nobility will count it honor to go to heaven in their company, with angels cooperating with workers as believers hunger for righteousness to have Christ in them as a well springing to everlasting life. Faith lifts the repenting soul to share adoption, and even when unbelief brings failure cutting short life-work, mercy reaches the depths, marks heart-service, and raises the discouraged servant to glory rather than leaving him to perish, as Elijah was lifted by angels to God's presence instead of descending to the tomb.

Believers ransomed from Satan's bondage are offered freedom and sonship with immortal inheritance, yet some refuse it and live instead for earthly wealth, status, houses and lands. Those who belong to God are his children sharing with Christ that immortal inheritance.

Christ Secures the Heirship

Christ purchased the inheritance at infinite cost, winning victory over sin, Satan and death so that everyone who believes may be heir of God and joint-heir with Christ. To make that offering He laid aside kingly crown, royal robe and high command, clothed divinity with humanity, left the heavenly home and riches and for human sake became poor, lived, suffered, died and shed His blood. By that life given He saves from sin's degradation, restores God's image, redeems transgressors from Satan's power, and makes it possible for them to be sons and daughters, partakers of the divine nature and joint-heirs to an immortal inheritance. Those who repent, confess and are received and pardoned become heirs to the inheritance purchased with blood, and if they remain true He will exalt them to His throne. Rich means possession of a valuable Christlike character that gives welcome as members of the royal family, gained by beholding Christ and dwelling on things pure and lovely which transforms the beholder, requiring a persevering course of training to keep the mind fresh, clean and uplifted. That fulfillment comes when fallen nature is conformed to the laws and authority of God's kingdom through submitting to Christ in faith and love, being filled with His divine life, made one with Him so thoughts and aims are identical with the Saviour's, born again not of flesh but of the Spirit, vindicating by obedience the immutability of Jehovah's law and declaring by consecrated service that the law of the Lord is perfect converting the soul.

Through Jesus people may receive immortal inheritance because Jesus, equal with God, humbled Himself, became human, and for humanity's sake became poor so it could be theirs, and the colored race is included among those purchased. In Christ human beings become children of God and heirs to all the treasures of heaven, secured by the gift of God's dear Son which makes all promises sure. One equal with God clothed divinity with humanity, stooped to human nature to reach man where he was, and paid the ransom, so that in Him humanity touched humanity while divinity laid hold upon humanity and man could partake of the divine nature, a life to be estimated by the infinite price paid and a tender love to be known by experimental knowledge. Those who belong to God through creation and redemption become His children, heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ in an eternal inheritance, which Christ made possible by becoming human and suffering and dying to bring humanity into God's royal family.

Jesus by appointment is heir of God and anointed head of the human family as Substitute and Surety, and all who receive Him by faith become co-laborers with Him in saving souls and are therefore joint-heirs with Him. That joint-heirship requires sharing His life of humiliation, self-denial, self-sacrifice and suffering in reformatory work carried forward to victory, and those who so suffer and overcome will reign with Him in glory with a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Christ suffered and sacrificed Himself to make escape for lost humanity, and followers are to take Him as pattern and willingly suffer with Him so they may share His glory. Because the sinless Son gave Himself and suffered for sinful people so they might not perish, those who come after Him must be partakers of His suffering to finally share His glory, by denying self, taking up the cross and following Him, suffering for Christ and fellow beings, and willingly enduring self-denial and privation for others in view of human need and sinfulness.

Through Christ's grace believers may be perfected and inherit God's everlasting kingdom together with Christ, for Christ became a perfect Saviour through sufferings borne for humanity and His sacrifice opens heaven. His humiliation and death make it possible to become heirs with Him to His Father's kingdom, since He took human nature and endured Satan's strongest temptations so He could know the conflict faced and support those who seek strength when tempted. God transforms sinful people into His children and heirs sharing the heavenly kingdom with Christ, as Jesus restores them to connection with Himself and re-creates them in the divine image. Christ gave Himself and suffered to lift sinners, cleanse, refine, ennoble them, make them joint-heirs and place them with Him upon His throne.

Christ has made followers joint-heirs of His glory with every provision for justification and sanctification as author and finisher of faith, so those made complete in Him bring rejoicing to Him and angels. That heirship rests on His giving life for sinners, opening by death a fountain where robes of character may be washed white, laying on Calvary's rock the cornerstone of His church, dying on the cross and rising as resurrection and life, and as joint-heirs they go forth in His name to bring many to knowledge of truth. Fallen beings can become sons, conquerors, heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ and inherit the kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world, prepared when the Lord of glory stepped down from royal throne, laid aside royal robe and kingly crown, took garments of humanity, stood at humanity's head to give value to humanity and enable overcoming through His strength unto everlasting glory.

Everything in heirship is owed to free sovereign grace, with grace in the covenant ordaining adoption as sons and grace in the Saviour effecting redemption, regeneration and adoption to heirship with Christ. Life on earth is training for heaven where character is now forming for eternity, so heirs sow patience, compassion and love and will reap what they sow, revealing this grace to others. Through Christ's righteousness believers become heirs with God and joint-heirs with Christ, their sins reckoned to Jesus and His righteousness imputed to them, so by faith they share in His victories and receive eternal life. The salvation secured by His self-sacrificing devoted life and by suffering and anguish endured to save lost fallen man is extended freely, but is received only by suffering with Christ, denying self for His sake and imitating His self-sacrifice.

Suffering Conditions Future Glory

Sharing in Christ's future glory and inheritance is conditional on sharing his sufferings; those who suffer with him will be glorified together, and those who will not share suffering will have no part with him, for only those partaking in sufferings will be glorified and those not taking part cannot hope to share glory. Suffering here means resisting sin, laboring for Christ's cause, denying self for others' good, bearing the cross, enduring humiliation and reproach, giving up worldly pomp and pleasures, practicing self-denial and sacrifice to do God's will, and preparing for patience in afflictions, necessities, distresses, stripes, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watchings and fastings, since hardship and trial belong to the Christian inheritance and those who share this life of sacrifice are promised a part in the eternal reward and crown of victory. Being glorified together is conditioned on suffering with him, so sharing glory hereafter requires sharing sufferings here. To shun the seven last plagues and enter glory requires dying to live, greater preparation, and laying all on God's altar with treasure in heaven. Sharing in the inheritance includes suffering with him in this life with promise of being glorified with him, the Spirit confirming adoption, and present suffering outweighed by eternal glory to come.

Sharing the inheritance involves sharing self-denial and suffering and enduring discipline faithfully in this life in order to share glory in the eternal world, a glory far greater than present suffering. Sharing glory is joined to sharing suffering, and those who will sit with him on his throne must first endure trials with him, since suffering is the path toward the kingdom and perfection of character, not a cause for fear or complaint, and believers can rely on his help as he himself suffered. Those who share Christ's sufferings will share his glory, for trials test faith and build spiritual strength and teach whole dependence on God. When received humbly with obedience and following his word, experiences prepare for his work and allow his power to be shown, for every soul saved must share sufferings to share glory, God subjecting people to trial to give strength and teach leaning wholly on him and becoming more spiritualized.

Heaven will be cheap enough if obtained through suffering, and suffering here is the condition for being glorified together. Denying self all along the way, dying to self daily, letting Jesus alone appear, and keeping his glory continually in view are necessary, and those lately embracing truth must know keen and cutting trials for Christ's sake that purify and fit them through suffering to receive the seal of the living God, to pass through trouble, to see the King in his beauty, and to dwell with God and holy angels. Being glorified together depends on suffering here, so Christians must cheerfully suffer something for Jesus' sake, die to self, crucify self daily, check every passion, give up self-confidence and self-sufficiency, be instant in prayer, and tread in the footsteps of the meek Pattern. This does not mean trials from an unsubdued heart that makes self sensitive and easily crossed, but humble, self-dead partaking of Christ's sufferings now, which leads to being made partakers of his glory and being crowned with glory, honor, immortality and eternal life. Heirs must suffer with Christ to reign and be glorified, and ordinary hardships from living under the curse do not by themselves make fellow-heirs. Those hoping for freedom from the curse must give themselves to God's cause, sacrificing ease, pleasure, comfort, convenience, own will and selfish wishes.

Sharing future glory requires sharing sufferings now and not seeking self-interest and worldly pleasure like the world. Believers are to sacrifice interests for God and his suffering cause in the little time left, seeking to please God and advance his precious cause and holding nothing too dear to sacrifice for the salvation of the scattered flock, and those who make a covenant by sacrifice will possess the new kingdom forever and share rich reward. Trials are a bitter cup given to purify and cleanse the heart, and patience, endurance and prayer can make it sweet and accomplish its purpose, while Christians who seek own interests, worldly pleasures and self-pleasing fall short of holiness needed to reign with Christ. Sharing inheritance and everlasting life are linked with following him in self-denial, self-sacrifice and service, and only those who so follow, giving themselves to God's service and accepting a life of sacrifice, will receive the reward of everlasting life when he takes possession of his kingdom.

Being God's children and joint-heirs is a gracious privilege that disappointments and afflictions do not cancel. Trials are to be accepted as a cross and bitter cup held by a Father's hand for good, trusting him in darkness as in daylight and remembering Calvary and his care, for suffering does not mean believers have ceased to be children but is consistent with looking to shared glory, God having allowed his Son a life of trial and reproach to teach this. Being child and joint-heir means sharing sufferings, which calls for earnest seeking and high piety, for mere profession or supposed hope is not enough and unfaithfulness puts everlasting life at risk, heirship being far more than nominal religion. Becoming children and heirs is a grand privilege conditioned on walking in the light as Christ is in the light by daily receiving grace and acting it out in words, spirit and deeds in faith, hope and comfort, each claimant on test to perfect character after the divine similitude.

Those who overcome through Christ's strength and grace by actively resisting temptation and doing their part, overcoming daily and enduring as he overcame rather than relying on his victory alone, become heirs of God and joint-heirs to an immortal inheritance and will share glory and receive the overcomer's reward. Believers are made heirs receiving immortal inheritance, and becoming a lawful heir is linked with earnest effort, self-denial and sacrifice of personal wishes and desires, whose refusal can mean losing heaven and eternal life. Sharing glory requires sharing ministry and self-denying life, requiring Christians waiting for their Lord to sacrifice and follow closely and inherit the crown, and to be glorified together believers must labor patiently and perseveringly for the perishing in all lands, helping the weak, wretched and despondent. To partake glory one must partake suffering, requiring consecration for service and willingness to share self-denial and self-sacrifice, and becoming a joint-heir requires having Christ's spirit and being willing to follow God and seek heaven despite sacrifice.

Sharing glory is joined to sharing sufferings by taking up his work and burdens, enduring trials and reproach, and laboring self-sacrificially to save souls, and those refusing this fellowship will not share glory or the joy of seeing souls saved in the eternal kingdom. Those who share sufferings are destined to share glory, and the church's persecution, opposition, self-denial and afflictions discipline and purify, teaching guilt and misery of sin and leading to abhor it, ending in victory and participation in his glory. All who hope to reign with Christ must expect to share sufferings, following Jesus' pattern of toil, sorrow, homelessness and self-giving as teacher who sends followers to seek scattered sheep despite Satan's opposition and objections, trusting him who called them to open the way. Sharing glory and being crowned is conditional on suffering by standing firm on eternal truth and willingly sacrificing all in unconditional surrender, while choosing one's own way leads into darkness until too late to secure the eternal reward.

Those who belong to God share inheritance and glory by sharing his path of self-denial, obedience and suffering, and those who endure loss for Christ will receive eternal life and be glorified in heaven, trials faithfully endured being repaid with eternal glory rather than complaint. Those who would share glory must also suffer as part of Christian experience before being glorified, and those who suffer with him share consolation and will share glory, not shrinking from reproach for his sake. Those who share Christ's humility by accepting his yoke of restraint and obedience become heirs of God and joint-heirs with immortal inheritance, and sharing suffering requires denying self and walking the hard path he trod, those who overcome sharing salvation he prepared. Sharing glory follows sharing sufferings, and those who endure trial, opposition, self-denial and disappointment are shaped and fitted to share glory, sharing humiliation and suffering preparing believers to share future glory by denying self and taking up the cross and following where he leads, as he accepted lowly privation to reach sufferers.

Partaking in humiliation and suffering by denying self and taking up the cross prepares for sharing glory if confidence is held firm to the end, with suffering deepening certainty of sharing glory. As he kept holy integrity, lived out the law, and held unwaveringly to truth and righteousness amid universal corruption, contempt and severe trial, followers must share that experience by adhering to truth when tried, shining with integrity and loyalty as unbelief increases, and standing steadfast for God's law and government. Followers must partake of sufferings to partake of glory and cannot expect a better portion than he had, so they should expect misapprehension, misrepresented motives, and unappreciated and disparaged losses, trials, self-denials, sufferings and labors, and still serve with full purpose of heart without chafed spirit over what cannot be helped. Sharing suffering requires denying self and patiently and cheerfully bearing refining trials God permits through the Holy Spirit's help, and suffering with him now leads to glorification hereafter through self-sacrifice at every point, sympathy for fallen humanity, and fighting world, flesh and devil with decisive victory over stubborn will and hungering ambition for worldly honor won only in and through Christ.

Sharing glory requires sharing suffering by accepting what hurts human nature, understanding discipleship intelligently, practicing self-denial at every step, and lifting the cross and bearing it after him, which brings companionship with him in suffering and lifts the bearer at every step. No one can be joint-heir without having his Spirit and being determined to gain heaven at any cost, requiring immediate preparation for his soon coming with no moment to lose, victory over temptation, refusing Satan's shadow, and placing self wholly in God's hands to be and do all he requires, leading to seeing the King in beauty and singing with harps to the Lamb. All who love Jesus will desire to share his self-denial and suffering, and sharing suffering brings sharing glory, shown by godly living and working with him, while evading the cross denies Christ and brings denial at judgment. Those who share sufferings will share glory, applied to believers persecuted for the Sabbath who must suffer with Jesus but will share his joy, for God will test every soul by his own standard, and lack of sharing in self-denial gives reason for alarm about discipleship.

The church militant is not yet triumphant, so sharing glory requires patient endurance under provocation, enmity and condemnation for keeping commandments, even when taken by councils and accused by lawless judges, those who suffer refusing to be hindered or frightened, serving with meekness and pressing toward the mark until the victorious receive the crown of life and partake glory. Sharing glory requires becoming acquainted with the Redeemer's life, denying self as he denied self, meeting temptations and overcoming obstacles through toil and suffering in his name as he overcame, to mingle with the glorified company before the throne, while professed followers who indulge in gaiety and feasting cannot be partakers, having no sense of his sufferings nor care to meditate on self-denial. Those seeking heaven and right relation to God are to share sufferings to fit character for glory, suffering with Christ being expected since partakers in sufferings will be partakers in glory, which is eternal life and immortality with forgiveness purchased at great price, to be received by faith laying hold on gospel hope and the promises amid temptation, steadfast through atonement and intercession.

What Sharing Suffering Means

Suffering with him means self-denial and self-sacrifice, taking up the cross daily and following where he leads as he did, resisting sin and temptation, maintaining principle for truth at all hazard, and laboring for his cause and for souls for the good of others. It means denying appetite and passion, which also preserves mental and moral strength to distinguish right from wrong and the sacred from the common, after the example of one who left his heavenly home to show how to resist temptation. It means cheerfully enduring privation, affliction, necessities, distresses, stripes, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watchings and fastings without murmuring, drinking of his cup and being baptized with his baptism, giving up the world's pomp and pleasures and bearing humiliation and reproach. His pattern defines it in poverty, making himself of no reputation, hunger, thirst, weariness in labor, having nowhere to lay his head with the earth often for his bed, want, danger, blessing those who hated him in unlimited confidence in the Father and unreserved perfect obedience and submission.

Suffering includes bearing his yoke and learning his meekness and lowliness, living in loving unity and sacrifice, and travail of soul as burden-bearers doing earnest work to warn the world, washing robes of character white, helping one another in the most holy faith, humbling pride and ambition, and making calling and election sure. All followers share in these sufferings and will share also in the glory to be revealed, partaking his love and entering his travail for saving the lost, weeping with him in sympathy with the world's sorrow and in sorrow for its sin with no thought of self, being one with him in his work and drinking with him the cup of sorrow, which brings also a share in his joy. Walking with him brings sacrifice and self-denial at every step in order to see his triumph and share his glory together, living to do his will and not for self, pleasure, mirth and worldliness, made perfect by suffering.

Sharing his suffering requires more than self-denial, even self-sacrifice, lifting the cross and following him, entering covenant with God through him and surrendering self to his authority. It requires carrying belief in the Word into active exercise by working to help another and never uttering doubt, with faith exercised in helpful service, growing up into him the living head and zealously working to save souls along the rough thorny path he traveled. The church is still militant, not triumphant, in the thickest of the warfare, and victory comes by coming near to him the Captain of salvation, energized by his abiding presence and the quickening influence of the Holy Spirit, with fervor, zeal and earnestness proportionate to truth's value and without presumption and self-sufficiency. It means being tested and tried, passing through temptation and darkness and times of serious self-examination and close study of the Word to see whether one is in the faith, giving higher perception of what he is to the believer and what the believer may be to him in partnership in his great work, as the Spirit impresses the mind and forms character for working together with God into a sober sacred experience of a high order.

Those who suffer with him share his consolation now and will share his glory when revealed, brought into profound sympathy with the fellowship of his sufferings because he is afflicted in all their afflictions, having become for them a man of sorrows acquainted with grief. Trials borne well and faithfully refine and purify, bring closer fellowship with him, soften trials, sanctify life's pursuits, and give peace in him, so affliction need not destroy peace of mind or sour the temper. All sorrows and afflictions here are discipline for the higher life by which God fits his children for heaven to be glorified together with him. Suffering with him means waiting upon God and leaning upon him in entire dependence with growing trust and love as Friend in life or death and Crown of rejoicing, for he knows every throb of pain and throe of anguish, his heart beats in sympathy with suffering humanity with most pity for those who suffer most, he gives grace to endure what he permits, and the Father who does not let a sparrow fall without notice cares for and sustains with everlasting arms those who love and trust him.

Trials are a bitter cup given to purify and cleanse the heart, and patience, endurance and prayer can make that cup sweet and allow it to accomplish its purpose, while seeking own interests, worldly pleasures and self-pleasing falls short of the holiness needed to reign with him in glory. Hardship for him is part of Christian life, legacy and inheritance, not reason for discouragement or complaint, and those who suffer with him will be glorified with him. Trial and hardship will surely come, since he left his heavenly home to be despised and rejected, so cheerfully sharing his suffering in home life and church life, sowing gospel seed, doing duty, and bearing opposition, misrepresentation, unkindness and hatred for well-doing with meekness is the way to share his glory. Partaking with him in sufferings brings partaking with him in glory, though the path will not be smooth and without trouble, yet he traveled it first and beat down thorns and rough places to make a smooth path for feet to follow, and believers are to follow his footsteps and choose the suffering part to receive promised glory.

There is no rest here because the way to heaven is a cross-bearing straight narrow road he the King of glory walked first, and followers meekly follow without complaining of roughness or murmuring over trials, for his children have always had trials and every trial well endured makes rich in glory, while by great suffering he purchased a rich inheritance. Suffering is therefore to be craved and not avoided, even to being unwilling to meet him and the martyrs who laid down lives for truth without having suffered, because being perfected through sufferings and sharing with him is the way to share with him in glory. Coming close to the bleeding side on Calvary is the way to share that suffering and so to share the glory, for he loves believers and wants them to share his trials and sufferings in their whole life work so they can share his glory and reign with him in his kingdom. This suffering unto glory is connected with his second appearing when he brings reward to every person according to work. Gaining the eternal weight of glory as joint-heirs and partakers with him can only be by being partakers with him in suffering, following where he leads in sacrifice, separating from self, defects, sin, inclination and self-indulgence, walking with him as Enoch walked with God and thereby being fitted for angels above, than which no more exalted position can be desired.

Belonging to God fits believers to share inheritance and glory through suffering with him, enduring trial, opposition, hatred, affliction and disappointment for his sake, which teaches sin's evil and deepens gratitude for the sacrifice that brought forgiveness and redemption. In glory suffering and tears are ended and they stand with him praising God. The call to suffer with him includes self-denial and sacrifice in service to save others, so a life unwilling to bear these costs lacks participation in him. Sharing in suffering is part of the privilege of being a co-worker with him, with his life and character the pattern in forming characters for eternity, and suffering with him and being glorified together happen through working together with him. Wearing his yoke and laboring in his lines for souls for whom he died is the privilege of partaking his sufferings, and self-denial and cross-bearing often inconvenient, painful and mortifying, when accepted with submission rather than rebellion, produce good fruit, highest moral efficiency, clear spiritual understanding, steadiness of faith, power in prayer and growth in grace and knowledge, with partners afterward made partakers of his glory in sympathy with him.

Sharing sufferings is joined with sharing glory in missionary service, where hardship, self-denial and cross-bearing make workers partakers, and they will share his joy when souls are saved in the kingdom; missionaries who endure deprivation and sorrow in his work suffer with him, and those who suffer with him as they serve him will share his glory. His children share his inheritance and are called to share his shame, reproach, sacrifice and suffering, following his example through toil, danger, persecution and even death to also share his glory, while he identifies with them in trials and afflictions so that what is done to them is done to him. Those who receive him by faith become children, heirs of God and joint-heirs with him, with inheritance bound up with his cross, sharing his self-renunciation and joined to him in life and death with promise of appearing with him in glory.

As obedient children and heirs believers must accept great and seemingly unjust perplexities, do their very best, and remain patient without complaining or reasoning about what they cannot help. Suffering with him means remembering he is afflicted in their afflictions, hanging helpless souls upon him as his property bought with infinite price, sorrowing only because they cannot do more to bring souls into union with him, frequently drinking sorrow's cup without complaint, guarding health of mind and body, being conformed to his image and remaining passive in his hands. Being glorified together means being prepared by that patient sorrow to drink the cup of everlasting joy, holding title deeds to real estate in the kingdom of glory drawn strictly according to law and legibly signed, giving legal right to the mansions he has gone to prepare. Suffering with him means willingness to lay down life when religious faith is at stake, distinct from losing life through needless refusal to obey a civil law that does not conflict with faith. His disciples share in his sufferings, and following him does not promise worldly honor or large salary.

Partakers with him in sufferings will be made partakers with him in glory also, following one who led the way with greater self-denial than he requires in obeying the law, leaving heaven's royal throne, exchanging glory's crown for thorns, keeping his Father's commandments and walking the blood-stained path to Calvary. Believers may never have to suffer as he did, but they must keep the Author of salvation ever before them and never exalt self in pride or self-sufficiency. Sharing his glory is joined to sharing his sufferings after the pattern of one rejected by his own, requiring willingness to suffer with him and obey God even when closest family oppose, since choosing to please unbelieving friends instead makes unworthy to share his glory.

Glory Together Promised Ahead

Those who belong to God are heirs with Christ and share his inheritance, and those who share the Saviour's humiliation and suffer affliction with God's people rather than enjoy sin's brief pleasures will share Christ's glory and have a place with him on his throne. Their inheritance is immortal, and they will reign as kings and priests before God. Those who share Christ's suffering and reproach now will share his glory hereafter as his brothers, whom he continually remembers and who receive the ministry of angels. Even in his glory at his second coming he remains identified with humanity.

Those who belong to Christ are made joint-heirs with him in glory, sharing the glory he has secured. Those sent in his name help bring many to a knowledge of the truth. Those who suffer with Christ will share in his glory, for suffering for his name is a way of partaking with him, not something to avoid in favor of an easy life, and those who share his suffering will sit with him on his throne.

Sharing his inheritance and glory involves sharing his conflicts and suffering first, since suffering is part of the path to the crown of victory, as Christ himself was made perfect through suffering. Those who follow where Jesus leads can share his triumph and joy. The faithful who remain pure through great tribulation amid corrupting influences will triumph in the kingdom of glory. They face stern conflicts, wash their characters white in the blood of the Lamb, and triumph in the kingdom of glory.

If Christ is to have glory his people must share it with him, so after his ascension he delays receiving the coronet of glory and the royal robe until before the heavenly universe his church is justified and accepted. He presents the request to the Father that where he is his people may be. Those who suffer with him on earth will reign with him in his kingdom, for he identifies his interests with theirs and with love and constancy stronger than death pleads for his church and advocates the rights and titles purchased by his blood. The promise of being glorified together is fulfilled in the great day of God, when believers share the joy of seeing his face in his kingdom and remain there forever.

To be glorified together with Christ and to sit with him on his throne, believers must suffer with him and be partakers of his suffering. Attaining perfection of character is no easy matter but a conflict, a battle, a march day after day, and it is through much tribulation that believers enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore trials, persecution, and tribulation in this world are to be expected and met without timidity, cowardice, repining, or complaint. Those who overcome through faith in his blood are forgiven and restored to their Eden home and become joint-heirs with Christ. They receive not only pardon and justification but also a share in his glory and a seat upon his throne, carrying out God's original purpose for humanity as though humanity had never fallen, and their inheritance includes the first dominion.

Those who enter heaven do so as joint-heirs with Jesus Christ, not as guilty and condemned criminals. The heavenly inheritance is gained by overcoming self and sin, and it is lasting, unlike earthly riches and splendor. Those who repent, confess their sins, receive his pardon, and remain true to him will be exalted to his throne and become heirs to the inheritance he purchased with his blood. Christ pledges to his disciples who will suffer for him that those who accept him, join his army to cooperate with him against visible and invisible foes, share his humiliation before the world, and choose to suffer affliction with the people of God rather than enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season will become children of the heavenly King and members of the royal family, heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, partakers with him in his glory, reigning as kings and priests with God and receiving the dignity of his name.

The people Jesus called blessed on the mount are the ones who will inherit eternity together with him. Although his divinity was clothed with humanity, he is equal with God and has authority to give the treasures of eternity to whomever he wills. In public he described the character of those who will share the eternal rewards, the very people others would have called cursed, and in particular those who suffer persecution for his name will be richly blessed, and great will be their reward in heaven. Christ himself publicly named who will be heirs of God and joint-heirs with him: the peculiar people who will compose the royal family in the kingdom of heaven, those who possess the traits of character he blessed in the Sermon on the Mount. Those with that character are chosen as his subjects, united with him in his service, and will share with him in the blessing and the glory and the honor that will ever come to him, and those who suffer for his name's sake will receive a great reward in the kingdom of heaven.

He gave his life so sinners may be found heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ. The inheritance is mansions prepared for the righteous in the kingdom of the Father, where the Father holds the scepter. That kingdom is homelike, without overwhelming awfulness and grandeur, pervaded by love without misinterpretation, with peace, rest, and joy as its atmosphere, made up of righteousness, peace, and joy. Its subjects and heirs are the pure in heart, the peacemakers, the persecuted for Christ's sake, and all who love God in sincerity and truth, and there the faithful righteous will sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.

The church is married to Christ and will share in his kingdom as a joint-heir with him, with the assurance that God will love the joint-heir as God loves his Son. God's children are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, sharing an eternal inheritance that cannot perish, be defiled, or fade away. Though they face trials, persecution, and affliction, they can look forward to appearing with Christ in glory, for their life is hidden with Christ in God and their hope is not worldly approval or worldly standards but eternal life and riches with God. Their inheritance includes being acknowledged by Jesus as his when he comes as Conqueror, sharing his kingdom and its everlasting glory. Receiving this honor calls for faithfulness, self-denial, and bearing the cross rather than choosing earthly pleasures, and those who are faithful will share the heavenly home and the joy of the redeemed.

Walking with Jesus here in humble obedience leads to sharing his triumph and his joy when the shades of darkness pass away, the morning comes, and the conflict ends. Everyone who is a partaker with Christ in his suffering will receive a crown of life and a glorious destiny as an overcomer that imagination in its most exalted flight cannot picture. Though humbled in the dust with pride and ambition put to shame, such a one receives a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory through the ceaseless ages of eternity. Those who overcome and become like Christ are members of God's royal family, children of God and heirs of heaven, and their inheritance is joined to Christ, a hope that applies to those who endure the test of life faithfully.

Those who are made heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ will enter the kingdom and share Christ's glory. The redeemed will see that, through his grace, their faithful work in helping save others brought souls into heaven, and they will rejoice with the heavenly universe. Those who share his sufferings and work with him in the plan of redemption will share his joy and glory. Their labor for the salvation of others will endure, and they will rejoice with him when the saved gather in heaven to praise God forever. Those who suffer for the truth with Christ share in his suffering and will share in his glory, and maintaining principle despite persecution is a path of following Jesus. Those who suffer with him refuse to be hindered from purpose and press forward until the victorious receive the crown.

Living Worthy of Heirship

Heirs belong wholly to God and are marked as His own, set apart from the world by life and not by name only, with moral courage to stand among unbelievers, leave worldly fashions, come out separate, refuse corrupt influences, and follow His self-denying example without shame. This separation requires union of the human with the divine, with the law written in the heart and the love of Christ controlling action as the principle of life, and it is shown in sanctification through truth, carrying sacred truth, witnessing under the baptismal vow, and letting light shine in good works so others glorify the Father. Those whose citizenship is above hold title to immortal inheritance, eternal substance, and unfading crown as royal children, representing Christ's attractive character, keeping His commandments, living with joy, exercising faith working by love that purifies from defilement, touching not the unclean, and taking no part in political strife.

Receiving the immortal inheritance requires being peculiar and wholly God's, differing from the world in life; God will not receive, honor, and acknowledge a people mixed with the world, and soon it will be known who is on the Lord's side. Only those with moral courage to take a conscientious stand before unbelievers, leave fashions, imitate Christ's self-denying life, and refuse to be ashamed of Jesus belong among the heirs.

Heirship is for both rich and poor and is given to the obedient who keep all the commandments and walk in light heavenward, putting business in its subordinate place when it presses upon spiritual and eternal interests. Keeping the commandments and standing on the law as the platform of eternal truth that no storm can sweep away is the condition for being a kingdom of priests and heirs, a calling to be missionaries for white and black alike. Choosing the degrading captivity of disobedience and transgression that makes void God's law joins the great apostate, rejects the inheritance, and stands with worship of the beast and his image, and no standing, position, or high profession can secure heaven's approval while following practices God disallows or while grasping and selfish like men of the world.

Being made heirs involves obedience, since disobedience separated humanity from Eden and obedience is the way Eden is restored. Obedient children as the royal family sharing heirship must put away murmuring and complaining as unworthy of them, keep the will in subjection to God, be disciplined by the Spirit, and manifest love at home and the same pleasant disposition abroad in forbearance, meekness, courage, and love, for the homes Jesus prepares belong to the pure who love and obey His Word, who are sanctified, refined, fitted for heaven with Christ's character, to meet to part no more.

Heirship is far more than profession or nominal religion; it vindicates by obedience the immutability of Jehovah's law and declares the law perfect and converting by consecrated service. It is fulfilled when fallen man's nature is conformed to the laws and authority of God's kingdom through submitting to Christ in faith and love, being filled with His divine life, made one with Him so thoughts and aims are identical with the Saviour's, and being born again not of flesh but of the Spirit so that to obey is to carry out his own will.

Being an heir means being balanced with religious principles, without which a man is ignorant and poor no matter how much learning he gains or how much wealth the world bestows. By grace any soul may become an heir sharing inheritance with Christ, and this hope requires treating others gently, since hurting or driving someone from Christ can harm one who may become joint-heir. Because souls bought by blood carry such value they must not be trifled with by harshness, unkindness, or indifference, for to bruise the hearts of His purchased ones bruises Christ, a hurt soul is often a destroyed soul, and those with light and trust are responsible for souls as God's heritage to meet again around the great white throne for approval or disapproval.

Those who work with Christ to bring people to God are heirs to immortal inheritance, made God's children by grace through redemption, regeneration, and adoption to become agents in His work, with precious reward even in this life and full joy at the final revealing. Devoting God-given abilities to doing His words and partaking His sufferings brings great reward as those who turn many to righteousness, sitting with Him on His throne and sharing His joy and glory including the joy of seeing those helped saved in the kingdom.

Heirs are fellow workers together with God, branches bearing fruit, and the promise reaches neighbors brought to Jesus through effort, whose transformation fits them for heaven's society. Sharing glory requires sharing sufferings now while the church is still militant not triumphant, in the thickest warfare, growing up into Christ the living head, following His example of zealous soul-saving along the rough thorny path He traveled, energized by His indwelling and the Holy Spirit with fervor, zeal, and earnestness proportionate to truth's value, without presumption. This includes laboring to bring the lost back amid a crooked generation, being welcomed into the City, and being prepared by Christlike experience to suffer now in order afterward to partake glory above.

Heirs stand under Christ's banner as faithful soldiers in the conflict between good and evil, partaking humiliation and suffering for truth, for no one can stand neutral but all witness for or against Him. The Christian warfare until Jesus comes is aggressive and every true Christian will meet severe trials, growing in capacity to enjoy Christian privileges by growing in acquaintance with suffering like the Master, a man of sorrows, by deciding to have heaven, fighting the Lord's battles, pressing to the gate, and being victorious. Women who suffered persecution, want, and danger alongside husbands for truth and souls will receive reward equal to theirs.

God renews, sanctifies, and trains souls to be heirs of glory through the harmonious working of His cause as one great system, and joining that work is entering co-partnership with Christ in which every member must act his part, though all do not have the same work and every part is indispensable. Being heirs with Christ means being one with Him and working in partnership with the Saviour, belonging with personal standing before God in which sins are forgiven, guilt removed, and heart purified by His righteousness, with refuge in Christ and readiness for coming trouble as personal safety before God.

All who surrender in unselfish service cooperate with the Lord of glory as joint-heirs, and by partaking His sufferings and sharing His sympathies labor is ennobled to His honor and praise, swelling His joy, sweetening toil, bracing the will, and nerving the spirit for whatever befalls. The worker who unselfishly imparts received sacred light to those in error's darkness to help, bless, and save perishing souls realizes heavenly treasures making him more than a millionaire as heir to far more exceeding eternal weight of glory.

Those connected with God reveal it by working with Him as partners with God and Christ and as such share immortal inheritance, and doing one's best by following His example and overcoming brings full welcome above where He leads beside living waters, teaches providences not understood here, shows love in adversities, and shows trials were allowed to remove unchristlike traits and strengthen weak points. Those who go forth in His name as messengers to reveal Him for the Father's and Son's glory are one with Him with His interests first, and as co-laborers will be made heirs to immortal inheritance in His everlasting kingdom. Every neighbor however ignorant, outcast, defective, including the downtrodden poor Christ died to save, can become heir through purifying, sanctifying faith as trophies of grace that refines taste, sanctifies judgment, and fits the soul for the Word, and pardoned souls who labor earnestly and untiringly to lead souls to Jesus bring them into heirship while themselves receiving transformation, peace, joy, and fitness for angels.

Believers receive rich indescribable inheritance in oneness sharing God's inheritance together with Jesus, like secure life insurance demanding immediate decision to come into His ranks and not join the enemy, requiring laboring, praying, and entreating youth threatened by liquor and intemperance for the Spirit to impress hearts. Heirship means being honored as co-partners in heaven's firm, anointed with the Anointed One, binding interests with His and uniting to obtain fitness for holding forth the Word for a perishing world. It depends on denying self, lifting the cross, following in transformation of the entire being, cultivating refined piety and unreserved self-sacrifice in probation that decides destiny, for only those completed in His image receive His glory which is His character and moral image, follow Him in the regeneration, see His face, and become lights.

Those complete in Christ are heirs to immortal inheritance, belonging to those who cooperate and take hold of divine nature through knowing Jesus in oneness and working partnership. Sharing inheritance comes through building approved character now by repressing evil, controlling self, and joining human effort with grace, strength, and power to form fitness for everlasting life and angel society, with angels ministering, leading to immortal glory when the trump raises the dead in a moment.

Each person is deciding destiny now by developing character while God tests whether he may become royal member with immortal eternal substance. The heirship is given only to those in probation pleased with order, regulation, rule, and specified discipline rather than demanding own will and perverse way, since despisers of discipline would bring disorder to heaven as they brought strife to homes, the same principles working the same result above. Being child and heir requires cooperating without delay in eternal interests, using opportunities, uniting with the spiritually minded, and molding life after the Divine standard, since repeated acts form habits and habits form fitting character.

Becoming heir does not repress activity but requires guided faithful work making one worthy and fitted for heaven, with God meeting desire to accumulate by revealing unsearchable inestimable riches and meeting ambition by giving safe ambition to become precious in character, breaking up worldly projects that unfit the mind for the future world. The heavenly treasure continually increases through giving to the needy and investing means and talents to advance the kingdom, following Christ who gave all riches and life, and receiving it is a choice for time and eternity with God directing aims without compelling service.

All Christ is belongs to true believers and all He has is for them, so means are money entrusted and lent to stewards for His glory, and those with means should at once return His own to lift His institutions from difficulty, for letting them decay for want of entrusted money dishonors Him. Because believers share heirship they must love as He loved in pure benevolence and disinterested labor, not hesitate when He asks cooperation, but use opportunity to manifest faith by sacrifice for relief of His institutions. Using entrusted means for selfish gratification injures the user and lessens prospect of being child and heir. One who received Christ as personal Saviour as joint-heir to immortal inheritance must not strive for outward display, spend for appearance, or live beyond means, but seek forgiveness for extravagance, change, and live humbly for His approval.

Faith as heirs to immortal inheritance that makes worldly wealth worthless leaves no room for selfishness and self-exaltation, for when Christ is all self does not assume large proportions and eternal life is God's gift. Choosing to suffer for Christ gives eternal riches, with the sufferer counted in heaven as heir through willing self-sacrifice steadfast under severe trial, meeting the condition for being glorified together, which is infinite gain. Loving the present world and trading high noble considerations for wealth or honor leaves one poor indeed, forfeiting heirship, while even the homeless have mansions prepared and the cross is salvation not discouragement, giving no cause to regret self-denial.

Those adopted share imperishable inheritance bringing salvation and honor far outweighing loss of worldly friendships or possessions, so giving up error, darkness, sin, and temporary standing for truth and lasting honor is no true sacrifice. Choosing sin means refusing riches of eternal glory and immortal inheritance shared with Christ, including exaltation with angels and equality with them, while Christ elevates those who respect God's law.

Obedience makes one heir of glory and royal member, but before wearing divine honors with grace children must undergo severe discipline to bring heart and mind into harmony with truth and overcome pride and error. Those professing to be heirs to whom God will render according to work must make His law as transcript of character the criterion, for it fits for every work and no one is fit for saints' society unless walking in its light and symbolizing His kingdom on this sin-cursed earth. Becoming heir comes only by guidance of the Word, which does not restrict righteous business diligence but condemns underhand dealing, scheming for advantage, overreaching, and fraud, and obeying with honest dealing acquires immortal treasures and God's peace worth everything.

Heirship is a noble calling with work entrusted by the Father to be worthy of, requiring life of noble purpose, daily watchfulness, sincere prayer, and little victories to complete victory over self and harmonious Christlike character. It forbids a cheap easily offended mind always thinking of self with fretting, faultfinding, envy, jealousy, and vanity, and remembering identity when words cut and bruise keeps one from taking offense and leads to worthy life. Remembering royal heirship when ridiculed or unappreciated removes disappointment, bitter feeling, and irritation and leads to praise for serving Him, since Christ though King of glory equal with the Father lived service, making it highest honor never humiliating to serve under His banner without seeking highest place or exalting self.

The child loves the law, delights in it inwardly not as burden, bears witness to the honor, and shows love by delighting to do His will. Standing as sons and heirs requires living as in the Lord's sight with cheerful kindness, courtesy, true dignified nobility, sobriety, and manliness, walking earth looking heavenward, communing with God, praying to be kept from snares, grasping Jesus' hand over perilous places, and refusing self-indulging course and even appearance of evil because of influence, since others will be stimulated to go further.

Christians reveal being children and heirs by fragrance of life and loveliness from being good and doing good, increasing in reverence, love, humility, confidence, and gratitude, blessing others, manifesting His spirit in the family, and teaching children His word and wonderful works. A person can know he is child and heir when he walks humbly, habitually studies the Word to know God and Christ, beholds Jesus till tender feelings replace hardness and the soul desires likeness and His Spirit's leading, bearing fruit in walking in love and heeding every whisper.

The power making one child and heir must first be revealed in word and deed glorifying God before teaching others, and once received as elect it creates great desire to reveal His presence in missionary fields. Heirship makes testimony and praise fitting even when repeating the same account, requiring not wasting precious meeting time but giving simple humble testimonies, for God is displeased and angels grieved when pride silences for lack of something new, while God and angels witness testimonies and the Lord is pleased and glorified by them repeated weekly in honor of Jesus on Calvary, His condescension, sufferings to make escape, pardon, and life, with blessings resting on the thankful.

Through faith and His death believers are made genuine Christians, made one through righteousness, separate by faith and distinct, and as heirs carry sacred truth bound by baptismal vow to let light shine by His merits in good works so the world glorifies the Father. Believers as joint-heirs should show connection with heaven in words, works, and life honoring the Father, and when Christ appears in power they will be like Him and share glory. All followers partake sufferings as part of being made sons, a standing of great worth measured by Christ's death to save from ruin, so they should value themselves as sons living in obedience and holiness of soul, body, and spirit by indwelling grace matured looking to Jesus, becoming living epistles known and read.

Those who cooperate are royal children sharing inheritance, with nature joined through merits to angels and to Christ and God Himself, to immortal life and reigning as kings and priests, which calls for separating from worldly lusts, refusing to degrade so exalted a nature, and using every power to become one in purity reaching God's intended height. Believers who draw near, humble themselves, and press closer to Christ are heirs and partakers of divine nature, gaining everything, not overcome by temptation to act as they please, standing where they reflect light and walk in godly fear. All who wish to advance will rise to become heirs if they follow light the Bible puts in hands, meaning heaven with unsurpassed riches and peace Jesus offers that the world cannot give or take away.

The nobility of sons and joint-heirs is displayed by cooperating to restore God's moral image, helping others stand free as self-controlled vessels unto honor, elevating temperance, and raising the degraded so Christ did not die in vain, thereby manifesting fitness for inheritance, possible only by submitting to God's control. The heir is to labor in willing, glad, honorable service, and in obeying all commandments reveals love for God in the same atmosphere Christ lived, for sonship confers honor of duty where God has prerogative to command and man duty to obey, yet nothing is forced. The obedience of adopted children rebukes evil works of disobedient men, and because Satan hated God's law, transgressed it, and lost heaven, seeing them keep it stirs his worst opposition to allure them from narrow holiness into broad sin.

Other people's wrongdoing does not excuse neglect of one's own duty before God, for heirship gives hope and purpose beyond personal convenience and living only for this world is a serious mistake. Christ's children are called to lives of self-denial, sacrifice, humility, and faithful work with Him, and those who serve with right principles and kindly, converted, humble spirit receive the Spirit's witness that they belong as children sharing inheritance, with angels ministering to watch over churches and guard souls in need. Becoming sons is a call to dignity and high destiny for which discipline prepares youth to honor God and bless others in response to the Father's tender love, with education begun here continued hereafter and only eternity revealing glorious destiny of man restored to image.

Those who follow where He leads can share triumph and joy; followers should expect reproach rather than worldly honor, follow His meek example, and deal justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Through God's gift of His Son sinners may receive aid for salvation and become heirs, a child of earth becoming a man of power through grace, and a slave becoming member of His body shares with master the inheritance and gospel privileges as fellow heirs united as brothers. Suffering with Him includes bearing reproach for His sake with hope of sharing glory joined to willingness to endure.

Christians are joint-heirs to incorruptible, undefiled, unfading inheritance, and preparing requires not filling the mind with trivial things, not wasting God-given time, and receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Believers are heirs and co-heirs with immortal inheritance and place in heaven to be attained through obedient life to everlasting life, while turning to pride, selfishness, display, and Satan's rule loses blessings now and hereafter, though God's favor and gifts are bestowed even now to ennoble and prepare for heavenly courts.
