A Family Looks to the Sunrise Over a Cityby emmanuel_higgins

Romans 8:25

But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

Hope is directed toward what is not yet seen. Those who hold this hope wait for its fulfillment with patience. This hoping and patient waiting belongs to salvation, which is received by hope. Patient waiting means enduring present trials in Christian service that refine and purify while the promised glory is still to come.

The verse stands with the assurance that the great Healer, the great Physician, is present to cure every ill and heal every malady. It stands with the example of Christ taking full humanity, with a full human organism, having human bodily wants and weariness, and strengthening and bracing himself for duty and trial by prayer to the Father. It is connected to the help of the Spirit for human weakness and infirmities when believers do not know what to pray for as they ought or how to pray as they should, interceding on their behalf and for their needs. That intercession is made with groanings which cannot be uttered, with inexpressible groanings, and He that searches the heart knows the mind of the Spirit because it is made according to the will of God.

The verse is connected to the promise that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose. It is connected to the assurance that if God is for believers none can be against them, for he spared not his own Son but delivered him up and gave him up for all and with him freely gives all things. It is connected to the assurance that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come nor height nor depth nor any other creature can separate believers from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus. It is connected to the intercession of Christ for people who cannot save themselves, giving them strength through divine grace to overcome. Read as part of Romans 8, the verse calls families to patient hope in God's saving work for children.
