What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
If God is for His people, no one and nothing set against them can finally prevail or defeat them. The question about these things closes the teaching that the Spirit helps weakness in prayer with intercession that cannot be uttered according to the will of God, that God works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose, and that He foreknew, predestined to likeness to His Son as firstborn among many brethren, called, justified, and glorified them. The assurance that follows rests on God not sparing His own Son but giving Him up for all, on God justifying His people, and on Christ having died, risen, standing at God's right hand and interceding, so no charge or condemnation stands, they are more than conquerors through Him, and neither trouble, persecution, hardship, danger, death, life, angels, principalities, powers, things present or to come, height, depth, nor any other creature can separate them from God's love in Christ. God proves He is for them by giving His own and only begotten Son, in which He gave all heaven, assuring them He will freely give them all things with Christ, even the Holy Spirit, for a deep and abundant experience rather than a weak and starved one. This belonging is for those who love God and are called according to His purpose, and they can therefore stand firm through weariness, difficulty, disappointment, trial and trouble, trusting Him without fear because He is more than all who can be against them.
Meaning and Context
If God stands for His people, no person and no power set against them can in the end prevail, overcome or defeat them. That security holds even amid discouraging surroundings and terrible conflict, where His power works like a consuming, refining fire that removes dross without consuming the human agent. It rests on His promises, which give security no opponent can overcome, and on His gift of His own Son, which assures that He will freely provide what is needed, including the Holy Spirit even when the gift seems too good to be true, for a full experience rather than a poor, weak and starved one.
The question about these things gathers up what comes just before: the Spirit helping weakness in prayer with groaning intercession that cannot be uttered according to the will of God, God working all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose, and God foreknowing, predestinating to conformity to the image of His Son as firstborn among many brethren, calling, justifying and glorifying. It is therefore a triumphant conclusion giving wonderful assurance that God is on the side of His saints, and specifically of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose, so that no opposition can stand against them. Those saved by hope thus wait with patience for what is unseen, persuaded that nothing can separate them from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
What follows explains and grounds the assurance: God did not spare His own Son but delivered Him up for all, and with Him will also freely give all needed things and make all things work together for good. God justifies His people, and Christ died, rose, is at God's right hand and intercedes, so no charge or condemnation holds or can separate them from His love. Trouble, persecution, hardship, danger, weariness, difficulty and disappointment do not defeat those who trust without giving up until they see deliverance, for through Him they are more than conquerors. Neither death nor life, nor angels, principalities, powers, things present or to come, height, depth, nor any other creature or created power can separate them from God's love in Christ.
God Who Is For Us
God being for His people makes all opposition powerless, because He holds unsearchable greatness, reigning power, glory, victory, majesty and everlasting strength. He has a mighty arm, strong hand and high right hand, able to do exceeding abundantly above all that is asked or thought, He sees the end from the beginning, His working none can let or hinder, and nothing is too hard for Him. In the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength, and with His light and salvation and strength of life and comforting presence even in the valley of the shadow of death, He will make all things work together for good to those that love Him.
He proves He is for them by not sparing His own and only begotten Son but delivering Him up for them all, and in that one gift He gave all heaven. With Christ He will also freely give them all things they need, including what they need and the Holy Spirit even when that gift seems too good to be true. That giving is for a deep, rich, abundant experience instead of a poor, weak, starved one, enabling persevering effort in cooperation with the divine to reach a high standard, do a great work for the Master, and be living channels of light filled with all the fulness of God while drawing with Christ in the salvation of souls. Those who come to Christ can therefore be confident He accepts them and that nothing can separate them from God's love in Christ or overcome the security He gives through His promises.
Because the infinite God justifies and pardons the sinner who enters the door of refuge He opens, through Christ's sacrifice and righteousness, no accuser or charge can prevail against the justified. Even when sin prompts accusations, the believer can stand justified before the Father, assured of His favor and love by the gift of His Son. Its truth will shine forth fully on the great Judgment Day, when every accusing tongue will be silent, the condemnation of those who resisted the Spirit will be seen as entirely just, and those whom He justifies He also glorifies.
He is for His people as the One behind every promise He makes, ever mindful of His covenant, always the same, keeping truth forever with no unfaithfulness in Him. He is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, wonderful in counsel, the only wise God, whose Word is Yea and Amen in Christ and will not fail though heaven and earth pass away. Distrust of His Word grieves His Spirit, and He alone is to be depended upon, honored by believing His Word, coming to the heavenly Father as a child comes to an earthly parent to ask for needed things as the Holy Spirit, and trusting in the Lord forever.
As the great Physician present to heal every malady, Christ took full human nature with its bodily wants and weariness and was braced for duty and trial by prayer to the Father. Amid the terrible conflict His people face, God's power works like a consuming, refining fire, removing the dross without consuming the human agent. The Spirit helps human infirmity by making intercession with groanings which cannot be uttered according to the will of God, so that those saved by hope wait with patience for what is unseen, persuaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come nor height nor depth nor any other creature can separate them from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.
Those God Is For
The promise belongs to those who love God and are called according to His purpose, so that no one and nothing can stand against them or ultimately prevail. He has separated them from the world for Himself as His own peculiar people, a holy nation, a royal priesthood, and as His sons and daughters who carry His truth to the world. He proves He is for them by not sparing His own Son but delivering Him up for them all, and with Him He will also freely give them all things they need, making all things work together for their good. Though a mighty host is arrayed against them, God is on their side with all power, and they are to put their trust in the Lord God of Israel rather than rely on men, and then they will gain the victory.
God stands on the side of everyone, even the feeblest, who enters moral cooperation with Him, so no opposition can defeat their appointed work. This means placing oneself in right relation to God to know His mind and to do the works of the Father as Christ did what He saw the Father do. Believers are His cultivated field and building, and He does soul gardening in them to bring all human capabilities into active working order so that fruit appears to His glory. The confidence rests on the truth that He delivered His own Son for all and with Him freely gives all things, for all power is of God.
The promise requires faithfulness in God's service in little commonplace duties lying directly in the path. It is not to be neglected to study own pleasure and convenience, to accommodate surroundings to own likes and dislikes, or to do nothing because a larger self-pleasing work cannot be grasped. It exposes Satan's excuses that blind understanding to the work at hand. What the Lord requires must be studied in Scripture by those who think they can follow Christ's example while indulging self-gratification, display, and expensive habits of living.
It calls for loving God supremely and neighbor as self by seeking friends, devising plans to reach minds and hearts, and seizing nearby opportunities to do good. The eye is to be kept single to God's glory and the walk kept in the light of His Word to keep the soul warm, with certainty that the God who gave His Son will also freely give everything needed. Victory comes not through numbers or human power but through surrender to Jesus and strength from God. Those united with God and trusting in His strength need not fear opposition, for neither wicked people nor evil spirits can prevent His work or shut Christ's presence away from them when they repent and claim the Saviour's promises in faith, and opposition can be resisted through the Spirit.
Those who stay true to the Word of God and stand fast by the Saviour stand under the shield of Omnipotence on the side of Christ and the loyal, holy angels, and therefore have no one to fear. Those who carry the truth with pure hearts and lives have God on their side, with His angels working alongside their efforts, and Christ as companion as they wear His yoke and carry His burdens, receiving what they need to serve and impart to others. This removes fear of opposition and criticism and gives strength to resist subtle, dangerous temptations to treat as admissible what departs from Bible principles. This is especially for physicians who believe present truth for the last days and for gospel ministers and physicians who must not swerve from the truth when those without experimental knowledge criticize and turn small obstructions into mountains.
Victory Over Opposition
In every crisis God detects, exposes, and overturns even the craftiest plots of Satan and his agents, and brings His work to eventual success. Remembering what He has already done gives His people support when in danger. When God is for His people their enemies cannot ultimately prevail against them.
The best weapons of opponents cannot destroy truth, however hard they try to blacken it by misrepresentation and criticism. No weapon formed against those armed with the gospel and imbued with Christ's love can prosper. Those who bear the message of truth are to remain calm and rest in God, following a calm and patient example under contempt, bitterness, and reviling, even when meeting those moved by a power from beneath to uphold falsehood. Christ is the companion of His workers as they wear His yoke and carry His burdens, and relying on Him they receive what they need to serve and to impart to others, so that human opposition has no strength to overcome them.
Satan may accuse and seek permission to destroy, and wicked people, finite mortals, and evil spirits may strive against God, but they can do nothing to prevent His work when God is for His people. Those united with God and trusting in His strength need not fear opposition, for neither wicked people nor evil spirits can shut Christ's presence away from them when they repent and claim the Saviour's promises in faith. Victory comes not through numbers or human power, but through surrender to Jesus and strength from God, and opposition is resisted through the Spirit. Because the infinite God justifies and pardons the sinner who enters the door of refuge He opens, no accuser can prevail against him.
Enemies may unite to damage character and influence, but they cannot finally prevail against those who trust in God. The Lord is mightier than Satan and will help His people overcome affliction through Jesus their Deliverer. God gives His people strength and help in trials, including imprisonment and shame, and their safety rests in His sustaining grace rather than in absence of suffering. Those who remain united in Christ and turn from idols and the world will not be separated from God by the world.
God's backing guarantees the success of His work, as at Cooranbong, where the work is bound to succeed because the Lord is at the back of it. Human prejudice, criticism, misrepresentation, and stumbling blocks placed by those who will not lift the burdens cannot stop it. Those who hinder it are working against God, and only those who have the mind of Christ and work in His lines do good rather than harm.
The same assurance held those rejected and condemned for loving the Saviour's appearing and holding the hope of His soon coming. God on their side is stronger than all who are against them, and this assurance brings free spirits, happiness, consciousness of right, and the approving smile of Jesus even when put out of the church. A family refusing to give up faith in Christ's coming left the church meeting confident that God was on their side.
Courageous Trust Daily
Believers can stand firm even in unpleasant and discouraging surroundings because God is for them, so no opposition can ultimately prevail, overcome, or defeat them. Faith trusts God through weariness, difficulty, disappointment, trial, trouble, and persecution without giving up until deliverance is seen, receiving help, hope, and strength from above in every time of trouble. This confidence rests on God giving His Son for them and freely providing what they need with Christ, on God justifying His people, and on Christ's death, resurrection, place at God's right hand, and intercession, so that no charge or condemnation holds. Through Christ they are more than conquerors, and no hardship, not even death, nor any created power can separate them from God's love in Christ.
God's people must not limit Him but come in calm, perfect trust, moving forward with firm step and singing His praises with melody in the heart, fearing no person and no evil. If God is for His people He is more than all who can be against them, and under almighty protection He is the majority, so they need not feel outnumbered or be moved by opposition. They can depend entirely on Him, trust Him with helpless souls, find in Jesus Christ their sufficiency, and gain the victory by trusting the Lord rather than relying on people or on men. Clinging to His arm in faith brings His blessing with renewed health physically and spiritually in sickness and hardship, calling for prayer in faith and humble walking before God, since without Him people are weak and one touch of His finger can make them feel it. God stands behind His servant as a helper that no human being can exceed, so opposition to His work is no cause for retaliation and must not spoil peace of mind, for knowing Christ as Saviour is the precious assurance that God is for them. He has set them apart as His own peculiar people, a holy nation, a royal priesthood, separated from the world for Himself.
Present truth-bearers as His sons and daughters carrying His truth to the world are called to follow Christ's calm, patient example under contempt, bitterness, and reviling, keeping calm rest in God even when meeting people moved by a power from beneath to uphold falsehood. Christ is their companion as they wear His yoke and carry His burdens, so relying on Him they receive what they need to serve and impart to others.
