Romans 9:22

What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:

What if God, though willing to display His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels fitted for destruction. A vessel of wrath fitted for destruction is a person under Satan's control who injures others while seeking to conceal his own iniquity. Those fitted for destruction include evil people, apostates, and rebels. Vessels of wrath do not respond to truth but choose their own way and follow their own spirit. They are unclean and appointed to wrath, and by working together with God's enemy they leave no room for Christ to enter their hearts.

They reject love for God and for others and become Satan's instruments as vessels serving evil. His endurance means allowing them to live and supplying their needs and benefits. It also means allowing them to follow their own judgments when they are determined to do so. He calls the wicked to turn from their ways and from their thoughts, with promise of mercy and abundant pardon. That call encourages sinners to surrender their will and to benefit from His Word.

If God continues to endure such a vessel until that time, he is reserved for the seven last plagues. As truth is corrupted, God dishonored, His law transgressed, and the earth defiled, His wrath is to be poured out upon the world. His wider purpose was to make known the riches of His glory among the vessels of mercy, whom He called from both Jews and Gentiles. Israel's rejection of Christ did not mean God had rejected every Israelite, for a remnant remained by grace, and the inclusion of Gentiles brought salvation to them and served to stir some Israelites to seek it. The verse's strong language does not establish that God keeps the wicked alive in unending torment in hell.
