Romans 9:28
For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
The Lord will finish His work on the earth swiftly and cut it short in righteousness, bringing it to a brief, decisive, and soon-coming completion. It is the closing work of the third angel's message, which will go forward in mighty power and accomplish its purpose. That short work is the worldwide final gospel warning, proclaiming God's law and the message of Christ's righteousness with a loud voice to every land to prepare the way of the Lord before judgment falls and probation closes. It will be completed in an unexpected manner, with divine agencies combining with human effort so that thousands are converted in a day, done under the baptism of the Holy Spirit with consecrated hearts according to the Word. Because that quick work is near and already taking place, God's messengers must move swiftly to carry the saving truth to the scattered flock, watching and laboring diligently and faithfully using every opportunity without delay.
Meaning and Old Testament Roots
The Lord will finish His work on earth swiftly and cut it short in righteousness, bringing it to a brief, decisive, and soon-coming completion. That short time remaining before the end of earth's history makes the quick work already taking place and near at hand. It is the urgent spread of the saving truth and the great work of bringing the message of truth to people, to be done under the Holy Spirit's guidance and according to the Word with whole hearts consecrated to God. Therefore God's messengers must move swiftly and hasten to search for the scattered flock and carry to them spiritual food, while those who travel without a message and without a duty to go are not His messengers but hinder the work and misuse resources needed by people in need.
In its setting from Isaiah's declaration, the completion of God's work of salvation in righteousness as a short work on earth means that though Israel's people are numerous, only a remnant will be saved. Yet God can transform every believer in Christ, Jew and Gentile alike, and give to each one the blessings promised to Israel.
The swift, decisive work the Lord will soon do on earth is closely bound to Jesus' nearly finished work in the sanctuary and to the four angels soon releasing the four winds. Its soon completion makes the present a time for alertness and readiness, calling for staying spiritually awake and ready.
Final Gospel Warning
The verse describes the closing work of the third angel's message, which will go forward in mighty power, accomplish its work, and be cut short in righteousness. That final warning message will be proclaimed with great power and its work will be finished in righteousness. It stands on its own foundation and does not depend on setting a time to give it force. It does not need a time prediction to strengthen or support it, and does not depend on a time announcement. Believers should therefore seek their present duty from God rather than assume the work will end at a predicted date, and time is no longer a test.
The short work is the worldwide final gospel warning that brings the work of the third angel to its close. God's watchmen must clearly proclaim His law and the message of Christ's righteousness before judgment falls and probation closes. Probation will not close until the warning is more distinctly proclaimed, and the message will go to every land before the work is cut short. This worldwide message prepares the way of the Lord and is to be proclaimed with a loud voice, and the world must be prepared for it. A loud cry will be heard throughout the churches.
Workers will be called from ordinary occupations to proclaim this worldwide warning. The Lord's great work on earth will be brought to a swift, righteous completion when the world has been warned. As that time approaches, many people are being tested and making their decisions.
Manner of the Short Work
The final work will be finished in an unexpected manner, cut short and brought to completion swiftly. Divine agencies will combine with human effort in that closing work. Thousands will be converted in a day at the eleventh hour.
The Spirit will move in ways no one can predict and through people no one would expect. Those who have already had their opportunity but have not recognized God's voice will be passed by. Those who have not valued the Spirit's work will likewise be passed by.
The short, decisive work is done under the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which enables God's people to carry it out sharply, quickly and clearly. It is done according to the Word and with whole hearts consecrated to God. It is the great work of bringing the message of truth to people, brought by the Lord to completion in a short time and in righteousness.
God's work will go forward in righteousness even if those who had opportunity to help refuse the message and hinder it. They will lose the blessings and the service they could have had, while the work advances without them. Though commandment-keeping people are few and Satan's forces are many and seek to control the world, God is more powerful than they are. The risen Saviour is sufficient for every need. Those who come to the Lord humbly and repentantly will see the work cut short in righteousness and soon completed despite the size of Satan's armies.
Judgment and Sifting
The verse points to the Lord soon bringing His work on earth to a swift end and putting an end to sin. That swift completion in righteousness is set amid widespread corruption and oppression, with disasters and violence bringing destruction. It is likewise set amid worsening evil marked by disease, crime, and unseen dangers.
When God's law is made void it is time for Him to act and bring His work to a decisive end in righteousness. That end includes the final destruction of Satan as the root of apostasy and of his workers as the branches who teach lies about God's law. Their deeds are recorded and they will be judged by that law.
The period of human probation is brief, and God will do a short, decisive work on the earth. His tests will come sharply through providential events and will reveal each person's condition. They will bring reform and will separate half-hearted, worldly and world-loving members from believers. Since His infinite wisdom knows each person's case and the end from the beginning, people should wait patiently, submit to Him, humble themselves, and prepare.
The verse does not support claims that probation would end in October 1884 or that God would seal a remnant within fifteen days. Such dated applications rest on false premises and are not a message from God. Probation was not closed and the saints were not yet sealed.
Urgent Call to Labor
Because the work on earth will be finished quickly and cut short in righteousness, the time for action is short and the quick work is both near and already taking place. God's messengers must therefore move swiftly and hasten to search for the scattered flock. They must carry to them the saving truth before the work is cut short and brought to its appointed end.
Not everyone who travels in the cause is God's messenger, for His messengers have a message and a duty to go. Those who go without a message or without a duty to go hinder the work. They misuse means and waste resources that could have carried spiritual food to feed people in need.
The short work calls for prompt attention to neglected places, including the quick establishing of institutions, to prepare a people to stand before God at the time of the end. It calls for proclaiming the message now in San Francisco and Oakland, because the time for labor there will be cut short. San Francisco has already faced heavy judgments, while Oakland has so far been spared, though God's wrath is upon many inhabitants of both cities.
Part of the quick work the Lord will do in the world will be seen on sickbeds, where Christ will be accepted and confessed more often than in the past. Physicians will speak timely words of wisdom and life, sowing the seed of faith. Christ Himself will cause the seed they sow to bear fruit unto eternal life.
Because time is short and the end of earth's history is near, Christ's servants must watch and labor diligently and faithfully use opportunities to bring the truth to the world. They must not hinder the work through criticism or restrictions. They must earnestly seek God in humility and faith for a deep experience able to stand the coming test, for the Lord will do a short work and stir His people mightily. Workers must be trained without delay, for a great work is to be done.
