Romans 9:29
And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.
The Lord of hosts left behind a living seed within Israel, and by that act kept a remnant of His people from perishing. Had that seed not been left, the nation would have suffered utter ruin, becoming as Sodom and being made like Gomorrah. Survival therefore was not owed to human strength but to divine preservation that spared a remainder when total destruction was deserved.
The name Lord of Sabaoth identifies God as commander over all power, and in that character He is the preserver of His faithful ones when they are persecuted. For this reason the cries raised to Him by hunted preachers of the gospel are not mere protests against suffering but appeals to the One whose office it is to keep His people alive amid oppression.
