Ruth 3:18

Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

The verse stands in the beautiful story of Ruth, four brief and wonderfully interesting chapters forming a little pastoral tale from the time of the judges. The book closes by bringing out the ancestry of the Lord Jesus, into which a Moabite woman is brought. The book was written by Samuel, or in the early days of David, perhaps by Nathan the prophet.

In the verse, “finished” means brought to an end or completed, that is, ended. The word itself does not imply that the work was done through labor. It is the same Hebrew word rendered finished in Genesis 2:2, showing that finished is a good rendering from the Latin finis, end, though ended would be preferred.
