Ruth 3:2
And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor. And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.
Boaz is the kinsman of Naomi and Ruth, found winnowing barley at the threshingfloor that night. The winnowing was done on a breezy day by tossing the grain into the air so the wind carried away the chaff and the wheat could be gathered into the storehouse. This nighttime winnowing gives Naomi the occasion to direct Ruth to bring to Boaz's attention his duty as a deceased relative's nearest kinsman. That duty belonged to the nearest kinsman, whether a brother or a more distant relative. The account of Ruth and Boaz carries the lesson of the near kinsman as a type of the Lord.
