Naomi Holds the Newborn Obedby fgsantiago

Ruth 4:16

And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.

The verse gives a glimpse of sweet, simple home life among the children of Israel in Bethlehem, where Naomi took the newborn child, laid him in her bosom, and became nurse unto him with a loving part in his care and upbringing. The child she received into her arms was Obed, the son born to Ruth the Moabitess after Ruth married Naomi's kinsman. That marriage and birth place the verse in the account of Ruth becoming the mother of Obed in Bethlehem alongside Naomi.

Obed became the grandfather of David through Jesse, and his line continued on to Christ. By this Ruth the Moabitess maiden became one of the progenitors and ancestors of the blessed Lord according to the flesh, so that David was descended from her on his mother's side and Jesus was shown to be a descendant of Abraham. The Lord in this rewarded Ruth's fidelity, faithfulness, and virtue by bringing her into the royal line from which the Messiah came. The taking and nursing of the child is God's care for the Seed. It belongs with the lesson of the near kinsman, who is a type of the Lord.

Through Ruth the Moabitess, Gentile blood was introduced into Jewish veins, for she became a proselyte to the Jewish religion. Her case proves the Mosaic system made the truth and altars of God accessible to Gentiles by naturalization and proselytism, by which fully inducted proselytes became citizens with all the rights of native Jews. God all along kept adding to Israel from among the heathen, with Ruth as an example. Israel was begun by calling one from among the heathen and was built up by calling others, and this proselyting of Gentiles was the first fruits of their future grand gathering in Christ Jesus, which is God's same unchanging work of gathering Gentiles to Israel from the beginning to the close of the gospel.
