Zechariah 1:4

Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the LORD.

The call not to be as the fathers came to the returned exiles when they were uncertain whether they could continue rebuilding. It was part of messages meant to sustain and encourage them by revealing God's compassion and love. It warns against being like the fathers who refused to heed the prophets' calls to turn from evil ways and from evil doings. The former prophets cried to them repeatedly to turn, but they did not hear nor hearken, and that refusal to listen was disobedience to the Lord Himself.

It belongs to Old Testament prophecy that is the Lord's word for the last days and will be fulfilled. The scenes of desolation described in these prophecies will be fulfilled.
