Zechariah 11:3
There is a voice of the howling of the shepherds; for their glory is spoiled: a voice of the roaring of young lions; for the pride of Jordan is spoiled. There is a voice of the howling of the shepherds; for their glory is spoiled: a voice of the roaring of young lions; for the pride of Jordan is spoiled.
The shepherds are the spiritual leaders and teachers of Israel entrusted with the flock of God. The word shepherd means feeder, Parnasin, holding together the two ideas of leading and feeding, which fits those entrusted with God's flock. They stand exposed in utter unfitness for their professed work of feeding the flock of God.
The howling of the shepherds and the roaring of the young lions answer to their glory being spoiled and the pride of Jordan being spoiled. The image belongs to a figurative picture of destruction and of a condition among the people. The howling depicts the misery of false shepherds accompanying God's wrath, applying to the approaching day of divine judgment when the wicked and false shepherds face the consequences of their deeds. It applies to professing ministers who fight God's holy law: when God's voice vindicates the law and proves it has not been abolished or changed, these false shepherds face judgment and the fate toward which they led others.
