Zechariah 11:5

Whose possessors slay them, and hold themselves not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am rich: and their own shepherds pity them not.

The possessors and shepherds are religious leaders entrusted with the care of the people. They pursue their own course and disregard the light God has given them, failing to heed and practice the truth. Though privileged to hear God's word so that they could have recognized the truth, they turn away from direct messages meant for them.

They indulge their own selfish desires instead of serving those entrusted to them. They neglect those under their care and show them no compassion or pity. Their course exerts a counterworking influence like that of the scribes and Pharisees in opposing Christ's mission.
