Zechariah 14:12
And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
The plague strikes with a wasting consumption of the body while its victims are still alive and upright, eating away the flesh, dissolving the eyes in their sockets, and dissolving the tongue in the mouth. Those described as having fought against Jerusalem are the wicked inhabitants of the earth, Jerusalem standing for the saints whom they hated and persecuted.
The plague belongs to the seven last plagues and to the day of the Lord's wrath, poured out before Christ's second advent. It is also shown falling after the seven last plagues are completed, once the saints have been delivered by the voice of God. It falls without distinction of rank or station, upon religious and civil leaders and upon ordinary people alike, and it falls with special force upon the false shepherds, whose eyes and tongues are consumed away.
With the consuming of the body comes a great tumult from the Lord and a violent confusion, in which the wicked turn their rage against one another. The verse thus portrays the final punishment and desolation of the earth, when the wicked fall amid their own violent passions and the outpoured wrath of God as He vindicates His law.
