Zechariah 14:4
And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
His feet are the feet of Christ, standing on the Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem, the same mountain from which He ascended after His resurrection. When His feet touch it the mountain cleaves in two and becomes a very great valley, a mighty plain made ready to receive the New Jerusalem, the Paradise of God. This is fulfilled at the close of the thousand years after the second advent, when Jesus descends to earth with the saints and the New Jerusalem descends from heaven and rests on the place prepared for it, and Christ enters the city with His people and the angels. At that time the wicked newly raised from the dead flee as the holy city descends, and the divided mountain becomes a great plain for the city of God in connection with the purifying of the sin-cursed earth by heaven's fires. He stands there as glorious and triumphant king and deliverer, on the mountain that witnessed His sorrow and prayers, and His return to stand there is an occasion for joy and eager hope.
Place and Splitting
The feet that stand in that day are Christ's own, set upon the Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem. It is the same mountain from which He ascended after His resurrection. His descent there is at the close of the thousand years, with the saints and the redeemed.
When His feet touch it the mountain cleaves in two and opens into a very great valley. The divided mountain becomes a mighty plain, a broad place made ready to receive the New Jerusalem. The holy city, the Paradise of God, then descends from heaven and rests and settles upon the place prepared for it, where the saints stand. The great mountain cannot bear Him, and so splits apart at His standing and leaves a vast plain.
Fulfillment at Millennium's End
The fulfillment comes at the close of the thousand years after the second advent, when Jesus descends to earth with the saints, the redeemed. At that time He stands upon the Mount of Olives, and the mountain divides to form a great valley, a mighty plain made ready. The descent of the holy city belongs to the end of the thousand years, after the second advent, and is bound to this dividing of the mountain.
The New Jerusalem then comes down from heaven and rests and settles on the place prepared for it. Christ enters the city with His people and the angels, and the saints stand where the plain has been made for the city to settle. At that same time the wicked, newly raised from the dead, flee as the holy city descends and settles on the plain.
The splitting is joined to the purifying of the sin-cursed earth by heaven's fires, when His feet cause the mountain to part and become a great plain prepared for the city of God. After the sin-cursed earth is purified, He stands again on the Mount of Olives, and the divided mountain becomes an immense plain on which the holy city of God descends. In that order the holy city and the redeemed rest there after the thousand years, while the rest of the earth is not cleansed until the wicked dead rise and gather around the city and fire from God devours them and purifies the earth. Only when the holy city descends on the immense plain will the land called the Holy Land truly become holy.
Kingship and Joy
His standing on the Mount of Olives is his coming as king and deliverer, with power and glory at his second coming. He will stand again upon that mountain as a glorious and triumphant king, and the same mountain that witnessed his sorrow and prayers will be the place where his feet rest at his coming.
His return to stand there is an occasion for joy and eager hope. When he stands again on the Mount of Olives at his return, Hebrew and Gentile voices will join together to praise him and welcome him. They will join to acclaim him as Lord.
