And, behold, the angel that talked with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him,
In the vision the angel who had been talking with Zechariah went forth, and another angel went out to meet him. The second angel met him so that he could be told to run and give God's message to the young man who was measuring Jerusalem. That meeting took place when it was uncertain whether the rebuilding would continue.
The coming together of the angels carried God's answer of intercession and pity to His afflicted people, who were suffering for transgression of His law, with the Lord coming to their relief. The order they brought to measure Jerusalem, and God's commandment for Jerusalem to be rebuilt, was a symbol that He would comfort and strengthen His afflicted ones as the city was rebuilt. The message promised that Jerusalem would be restored, rebuilt, and inhabited as towns without walls because of the multitude of men and cattle therein. For the Lord Himself would be a wall of fire round about her and the glory in the midst of her, and would dwell among His people.
The vision further called Zion to flee from Babylon and to rejoice. It warned that he who touches God's people touches the apple of His eye. It promised judgment in which the spoilers of God's people shall become a spoil. That merciful work greatly discomfits and alarms Satan and his army. Satan was stirred by seeing it in prospect to resist the Lord Jesus, standing before the angel and pointing out their imperfections of character and disregard of God's commandments. He claimed the church that had dishonored God by disobedience, so that His repentant people would not be favored but would remain in depression, sorrow, weakness, and suffering.
Joshua the high priest represents the church and Jerusalem, with priest and people in repentance unto obedience for the work God is about to do through Messiah the coming Branch. The chapter teaches lessons applicable to the present because biblical history is being repeated. In this connection it is studied with building the Lord's house and receiving His presence and approval.
