Zechariah 8:20
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities:
The verse stands in the first eight chapters of the prophecy given to encourage reformation among God's people under Zerubbabel in the work of restoring the temple and Jerusalem, and that restoration movement was a type of a final reformation to come. Through figures and symbols the prophecy directs attention to the nations and to God's power to save.
It looks beyond the return from Babylon to the final glorious restoration at the coming of Christ. As part of those closing prophecies it looks forward to that final restoration and gives hope to God's people who truly seek Him and lay hold upon the promises of the Spirit.
It is God's encouragement to faithfulness, with the assurance that there would yet come people, even the inhabitants of many cities of Israel, going up to pray before Him in Jerusalem. That word was fulfilled in faithful Israelites such as Simeon and Anna, who served God day and night in His temple. It also embraces the coming of many people and strong nations to Jerusalem to pray before Him, because His house was to be a house of prayer for all nations, as seen in the Ethiopian eunuch coming up to Jerusalem to worship and in other devout Gentile seekers such as the centurion and the woman from the coast of Tyre.
