Zephaniah 1:13

Therefore their goods shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation: they shall also build houses, but not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof.

The verse belongs to the warning that God's judgments would fall upon the Jewish nation, showing that the judgment would leave people's possessions and homes desolate. It describes what will happen in the day of the Lord, the great day of wrath and desolation. That day of the Lord is connected with the close of probation, bringing upon the wicked what the verse foretells.

The verse is aimed at evildoers and the wicked, specifically at men settled on their lees in careless security who say in their heart that the Lord will do neither good nor evil. They are the proud and the worldly and those who disregard Him, denying that God will do good or evil. Their punishment is that their goods will become spoil and plunder and their houses will be left desolate and laid waste. They will build houses without inhabiting them and plant vineyards without drinking or enjoying the wine, so that their work of building and planting will bring them no lasting benefit or enjoyment.

Money, property, wealth, labor, and apparent security and prosperity will give them no protection or deliverance from that judgment. Wealth will be plundered and homes laid waste, with loss of all earthly goods to those settled in careless security. The verse therefore serves as a warning to awaken men to their danger and rouse them to prepare for the solemn events at the close of probation.
