Zephaniah 1:15
That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,
That day is a day of God's wrath, trouble and distress, waste and ruin and desolation, darkness and gloom, clouds and thick darkness, and alarm.
It first warned Judah what continued apostasy would bring, when sinners against the Lord would be brought into distress and walk as if blind under alarm against fortified cities, where wealth could not deliver from wrath and the land would be devoured by jealous fire.
It also foretells the judgment that will fall on the impenitent world at the second coming, when sin and sinners will be destroyed as the earth was destroyed in the days of Noah.
Therefore people are called to seek the Lord before that day comes, to awake from spiritual carelessness and repent in humility and prepare to stand before God, for the present is the time to prepare a people to stand in the day of judgment.
That preparation means becoming thoroughly furnished now with the plain simple truths of the word through daily study and obedience, especially by the young, so as to give a reason for hope and stand firm in the coming time of fierce conflict and darkness.
Words and Original Warning
That day is a day of divine wrath and anger, of trouble and anguish and distress and suffering, of wasteness and waste and ruin and desolation and destruction, of darkness and deep darkness and gloominess and gloom, of clouds and thick darkness, and of alarm. It is the great day of the Lord, near and hastening greatly, and its character is the character of the judgments brought upon evildoers for sin against Him. It describes the true state of the unconsecrated and the terrible judgment coming upon them.
The prophecy first warned Judah of the results of continued apostasy and of judgment for continued apostasy. In its immediate setting it is a day of alarm against fortified cities, when those who have sinned against the Lord are brought into distress and punishment and walk as if blind. The surrounding lines join clouds and thick darkness to wrath, trouble, distress, desolation, and darkness.
Its immediate context adds that wealth, silver and gold, cannot save or deliver people from wrath on that day of fearful judgment. The land will be devoured by the fire of jealousy, and the warning belongs to punishment of sin with swift destruction on the land.
Future Judgment Foretold
The day foretold is also the judgment that will fall upon an impenitent world at the second advent of Christ, when wrath and trouble and distress and desolation and darkness come upon the ungodly. It is the Lord's great day of divine wrath and overwhelming trouble, ruin and gloom, in which sin and sinners are destroyed as the earth was destroyed in the waters of Noah's day. What first warned Judah of the results of continued apostasy therefore stands as a description of the final visitation upon impenitence.
It describes the true state of the unconsecrated in the church and the terrible judgments that will come upon them. Those judged are the ones who bring resisting influences against the work done in the fear of God to rid the church of hindrances and to correct grievous wrongs. That cleansing work is carried on so that the people of God may abhor sin and prosper in purity and the name of God may be glorified, and the day is divine wrath and distress and ruin and darkness brought upon the class that resists it.
It is a day of alarm against fortified cities, when those who have sinned against God are brought into distress and wealth cannot deliver them, and the land is devoured by the fire of jealousy. Its wrath and trouble and distress and desolation and darkness, with clouds and thick darkness, belong to the approaching close of time when judgments are already in the land. It warns of swift destruction upon the land for sin against the Lord, including the growing corruption of cities, from which there is no escape by riches, so the call is to seek the Lord before it comes.
Its warning encompasses judgment upon those who oppose the Sabbath in a coming time when a decree punishes those who refuse to worship the false sabbath while the true Sabbath is trampled underfoot. The day of wrath and distress and desolation and darkness thus includes in its scope the final conflict over worship and loyalty.
Call to Repent and Prepare
That day of wrath, trouble and distress, desolation, darkness and gloom, clouds and alarm is a fearful judgment from which wealth gives no deliverance, and it calls for seeking the Lord before it comes. The call is to wake from spiritual carelessness and to seek Him with repentance and humility in order to be prepared to stand before God. The present is God's day of preparing a people to stand in that day of judgment.
Its woe and wasting destruction comes upon those who do unrighteousness. That warning falls with special severity on watchmen who fail to make clear to the people their duty to God, who owns them by creation and redemption.
It means a coming time of darkness and distress, of clouds and thick darkness, that will bring fierce conflict. Then all will wish to be thoroughly furnished with the plain, simple truths of the word, so that they can meekly yet decidedly give a reason for their hope, strengthen their own souls, and stand with firmness and decision. That standing requires making the Bible the daily study and rule of life now, especially by the young instead of other books, because it points to eternal life and will judge in the last day, and neglecting it now leaves them lacking and unable to stand then.
