Zephaniah Warns of the Day of the LORDby emmanuel_higgins

Zephaniah 1:16

A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.

The great day of the Lord is near and hastens greatly, and it is a day of wrath, trouble and distress, wasteness and desolation, darkness and gloominess, clouds and thick darkness, and destruction. In that day trumpet and alarm sound against the fenced or fortified cities and against the high towers. The trumpet blasts bring wrath, trouble, desolation, darkness, and destruction upon evildoers and the wicked.

The prophecy was given during Josiah's reign and first warned Judah of coming judgment for continued apostasy. That judgment on Judah also applies to the judgment of the impenitent world at Christ's second advent. It is the fearful solemn time connected with the close of probation when the Lord comes to lay the land desolate and destroy sinners out of it. The day is near and part of the coming divine judgments, and its warning about the increasing wickedness of cities is present and has been fulfilled for years.

The trumpet alarm pronounces judgment on evildoers and the wicked who have sinned against the Lord. It falls upon the unconsecrated in the church who resist those working in the fear of God to rid the church of hindrances and to correct grievous wrongs. Such are settled on their lees, saying in their heart that the Lord will not do good and will not do evil. Distress is brought upon them so that they walk like blind men because they have sinned against the Lord, their blood is poured out as dust and their flesh as dung, neither their silver nor their gold can deliver them in the day of wrath, and the whole land is devoured by the fire of His jealousy in a speedy riddance of all who dwell in it.

The same warning applies to a coming crisis in which Sunday observance is enforced and those who keep the seventh-day Sabbath face imprisonment and death. In that crisis rulers who decree unjust punishment stand denounced.

The trumpet alarm signals impending judgment and calls God's people to be awakened to danger. They are to awake from spiritual lethargy and be roused to prepare. That preparation is to seek Him with repentance, humility and humiliation, for God is preparing a people to stand in the day of the Lord.
