Zephaniah 1:17
And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung. And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.
The Lord Himself brings distress and judgment upon evildoers because they have sinned against Him. To walk like blind men is to be left helpless and disoriented and without guidance, groping and wandering and unable to escape His wrath. To have blood poured out as dust and flesh as dung is to suffer violent death and ruin, with lives taken and bodies left degraded and dishonored and utterly destroyed. Those left blind are also left helpless before coming coercion and punishment, and their deaths are utter destruction.
This distress belongs to the great day of the Lord, which is near and hastens greatly. It is a day of wrath and trouble and distress and desolation and darkness and alarm against the fenced cities and high towers, when the land is consumed and its inhabitants swiftly destroyed. The surrounding words add that silver and gold and wealth cannot deliver anyone in the day of the Lord's wrath. The judgment first spoken against Judah also applies to the judgment of the impenitent world at Christ's second advent and second coming.
The day of the Lord at hand comes as destruction from the Almighty in the seven last plagues before the second advent. It brings distress with faint hands and melting and failing hearts for fear in distress of nations with perplexity while looking for the things coming on the earth. It includes famine where seed rots under clods and storehouses lie desolate and barns break down because corn withers. The saints are to be counted worthy to escape all these things and to stand before the Son of man at His appearing, while the wicked fall around them but it does not come near them.
The verse exposes the true state of the unconsecrated in the church who resist those working in the fear of God to rid the church of hindrances and correct grievous wrongs so the people may abhor sin and prosper in purity and the name of God may be glorified, and warns of the terrible judgments coming on that class. The warning is directed to evildoers in the cities and to people who have had great light and opportunities to know God's ways as part of punishment for widespread rebellion against God's law, and this judgment is already being fulfilled. The verse warns that God will punish dishonest and selfish dealing unless there is sincere repentance and thorough conversion. It applies to the coming coercion and punishment of those who refuse to worship the false sabbath, as part of the judgment on those who oppose God's law.
