Zephaniah Warns of the Day of the LORDby emmanuel_higgins

Zephaniah 1:18

Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

In the day of the Lord's wrath neither silver nor gold can deliver anyone, and neither wealth nor power can protect from judgment or bring relief in humanity's greatest distress. The whole land shall be devoured by the fire of His jealousy, for He will make a speedy riddance and destruction of all who dwell in the land. What was first threatened against Judah for continued apostasy also applies to the judgment that will fall on an impenitent world at Christ's second advent. That great and very terrible day is connected with the close of probation and comes in the destruction from the Almighty in the seven last plagues before the second advent and not after. It therefore warns evildoers who trust in riches, the covetous who keep gain for self, and the unconsecrated who resist correction, in a time of widespread wickedness already being fulfilled, to seek the Lord before judgment comes and prepare to stand.

Nature of the Judgment

In the day of the Lord's wrath neither silver nor gold will be able to deliver anyone from judgment, and neither wealth nor power will protect men or turn aside the judgments upon evildoers and the wicked. Riches will bring no relief in man's greatest distress, for wealth cannot save people from the Lord's wrath on the day of judgment nor rescue the guilty. The same warning holds for the covetous man keeping his gain and riches for himself, and for those who sin against the Lord through dishonest and selfish dealing. It is already being fulfilled among some who had great light and opportunities to know God's ways in a time of widespread wickedness.

The whole land shall be devoured by the fire of His jealousy, consumed in swift destruction of all who dwell in the land. He will make a speedy riddance and destruction of its inhabitants, swiftly removing them. Their silver and gold cannot rescue them from distress and judgment in that day.

The judgment first threatened Judah for continued apostasy. It also applies to the judgment that will fall on an impenitent world at Christ's second advent, to its destruction at that coming.

The great and very terrible day of the Lord's wrath is connected with the close of probation and the coming judgment. It is a destruction from the Almighty in the seven last plagues. That time comes before the second advent and not after. In that day the world is punished for evil and the wicked for iniquity, the arrogancy of the proud is brought low, and earthly wealth is useless as goods become plunder and houses a desolation, awakening men to danger and rousing them to prepare to stand.

The same time is described elsewhere as faint hands and melting hearts, with rotted seed, desolate garners and broken barns. Jesus spoke of it as distress of nations with perplexity, with men's hearts failing them for fear in looking after those things coming on the earth. Yet the saints who watch and pray will be accounted worthy to escape it and stand before the Son of man, with a thousand falling at their side and ten thousand at their right hand without coming nigh them.

Warning to Sinners Today

The verse lays bare the true condition of the unconsecrated in the church and the terrible judgments to come upon them when they resist efforts made in the fear of God to rid the church of hindrances and to correct grievous wrongs, efforts whose purpose is that God's people may hate sin, prosper in purity, and glorify His name. In the day of the Lord's wrath their wealth will be unable to rescue them, and the whole land will be consumed by the fire of His jealousy in a swift destruction of all who dwell in the land.

It warns evildoers and the wicked who trust in worldly riches and disregard God that desolation and punishment for evil will come upon them in the day of His wrath, when silver and gold will be unable to deliver them and He will make a speedy destruction of all who dwell in the land. The same warning applies to the covetous man keeping his gain and riches for himself, for riches bring no relief in man's greatest distress. It applies also to dishonest and selfish dealing, which brings distress and judgment upon those who sin against the Lord and brings God's punishment unless there is sincere repentance and thorough conversion, for their silver and gold cannot rescue them while the land is consumed with the fire of God's jealousy and its inhabitants are swiftly removed.

Riches gained through selfishness, deceit, robbery, or bloodshed cannot rescue the wicked from perdition when God brings retribution, for silver and gold cannot save anyone from the day of the Lord's wrath. The warning bears on the crisis over Sabbath worship, in which those who enforce the false sabbath and persecute the faithful face divine judgment in the Lord's day of wrath when wealth cannot save people and the land will be consumed. It is a warning for a time of widespread wickedness and for the present day, already being fulfilled among some who had great light and opportunities to know God's ways, urging people to seek the Lord before judgment comes. It awakens men to their danger and rouses them to prepare to stand, for in that great and very terrible day the world is punished for evil and the wicked for iniquity with the arrogance of the proud brought low, so that earthly wealth is useless and goods become plunder and houses a desolation.
