Zephaniah Warns of the Day of the LORDby emmanuel_higgins

Zephaniah 1:5

And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham;

The verse pronounces God's punishment on those who worship the heavenly bodies, the host of heaven upon the housetops. It likewise condemns those who divide their allegiance, mixing worship of the Lord with worship of Malcham and swearing oaths by both. This double unfaithfulness stands among the sins that bring the judgment of the great day of the Lord. In that day divine wrath falls in distress and destruction upon those who have turned back from God, disregarded His law, and sinned against Him.

In view of that coming day, the meek of the earth are urged to seek the Lord, to seek righteousness and meekness, that they may be hid in the day of wrath. The warning reaches with special force to the guilt of those who have enjoyed great light and opportunity to know God yet fail to live in accordance with His Word.
