Zephaniah 1:7
Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests. Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests.
Be silent and reverent before the presence of the Lord, for the day of the Lord is near at hand. The Lord has prepared a sacrifice and summoned and invited His guests, presenting the coming judgment as a solemn occasion.
The surrounding prophecy describes that day as a time of wrath and distress. The warning is aimed at those who turn away from the Lord, forsake Him, or fail to seek Him and inquire of Him. It accompanies judgment on rulers and others who reject the invitation while persisting in violence and deceit.
The invitation is rejected by people intent on worldly gain who show no respect for the master of the feast. Those called as God's chosen people cannot rely on their own wisdom or turn away from seeking the Lord without facing judgment. In the setting of judgment against evildoers, the warning is literally fulfilled in the conduct of some who have had great light and many opportunities to know God's ways. The meek are urged to seek the Lord, righteousness, and meekness so they may be sheltered from His anger.
