Zephaniah 1:8
And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’s sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel. And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’s sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.
The day of the Lord's sacrifice is the day of His judgment, when He will punish the princes or rulers, the king's children, and all who are dressed in foreign clothing. That punishment belongs to a wider judgment in which He will utterly consume everything from off the land, man and beast, the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, together with the stumbling blocks and the wicked. On that same day He will also punish all those who leap over the threshold and fill their masters' houses with violence and deceit. He will search Jerusalem as with lamps and punish the complacent men settled on their lees who say in their heart that He will do neither good nor evil, whose goods will become plunder and whose houses will become desolation, so that they build houses without inhabiting them and plant vineyards without drinking their wine.
The great day is near and hurries greatly, a day of wrath, trouble and distress, ruin and desolation, darkness and gloom, cloud and thick darkness, with trumpet and alarm against fortified cities and high towers. In distress sinful men will walk like blind men because they sinned against the Lord, their blood poured out like dust and their flesh like refuse. Neither silver nor gold will be able to deliver them in the day of wrath, while the whole land is devoured by jealous fire in a swift destruction of all its inhabitants. This judgment is literally fulfilled and has been fulfilled for years in the lives of people who received great light and many opportunities to know and understand God's ways and works.
The verse applies to those first invited to the wedding feast who refuse the invitation because they are intent on worldly gain and show no honor to the master of the feast. It warns influential people who turn from the Lord and refuse His feast invitation for worldly concerns that their status and supposed wisdom will not spare them from judgment.
