Zephaniah 2:2
Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’s anger come upon you. Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’s anger come upon you.
The decree is to be brought forth and the day of the Lord's fierce anger is to come upon the people. That day is near and will come swiftly and suddenly, passing like chaff passing away. It therefore urgently calls the nation to gather together and to seek and turn to the Lord before that day arrives, without delay. Though the warning concerned judgment on Judah for continued apostasy, it also applies to the judgments that will fall on an impenitent world at Christ's second coming. The meek who have done what God requires are to seek the Lord, righteousness and humility now in the time of probation, pleading with Him in humble earnestness to receive His righteousness, so that they may be hidden and sheltered and find refuge in that day.
Urgent Warning Before Judgment
The verse is a warning that the decree will be brought forth and the day of the Lord's fierce anger will come upon the people. That decree is to take effect, and before it does the nation is to gather and turn to God and seek Him. The coming day is the Lord's day of judgment and of His anger against continued wrongdoing.
That day is near, and it will come swiftly and suddenly. It passes like chaff passing away, like chaff blown away, so swiftly that the opportunity it closes cannot be recovered once gone. Because it moves that fast, the time to act is before it arrives, not when it is already passing.
Therefore the verse urgently calls the nation and the people to gather together and to seek and turn to the Lord before that day arrives, without delay. Gathering is not for its own sake but for turning to God and seeking Him earnestly before the decree takes effect and the day of anger comes. The call cannot be put off, for probation still offers the moment to seek God before the day passes like chaff.
Judgment on Judah and World
The warning was given concerning judgment upon Judah for its continued apostasy. That same warning also reaches beyond its first setting and applies to the judgments that will fall upon an impenitent world at Christ's second coming, at His second advent. The warning also stands alongside a coming decree that will punish those who refuse to worship the false sabbath. That decree makes urgent the choice between yielding to it and remaining loyal to God's Sabbath before the day of fierce anger arrives.
Seeking Refuge Through Humility
The way to meet the coming day is set out in the verse that follows, which calls the meek, even those who have already done what God requires, to seek the Lord, to seek righteousness and meekness and humility, so that they may be hidden and sheltered and find refuge in that day. The threat of fierce punishment is joined to the assurance that those who love and fear Him may trust in His mercy and love and kindness and compassion.
The present time of probation is the appointed opportunity to humble the heart before God and to receive His righteousness in preparation for that day. It is the time for humble, earnest pleading with Him before the decree takes effect and the day passes like chaff.
The warning is therefore a call to humble oneself before God now rather than face the consequences of refusing His call. Those who humble themselves in this way may be sheltered in that day, while those who refuse to be broken in humility will face judgment. In this way the present becomes the time to prepare for the coming King.
