Zephaniah 2:3

Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’s anger.

Seek the Lord is spoken to the meek of the earth who have obeyed His judgments and kept His commandments, calling them to gather and humble themselves and to seek the Lord, seek righteousness, and seek meekness. The seeking must be done now, before the day of the Lord's anger, while probation lasts and He may still be found, for readiness is a present work of repentance and change of character. Righteousness and meekness do not arise naturally in the human heart, but are precious gifts to be sought with sincere, diligent and persevering effort rather than by passively waiting for divine power to correct wrongs. To seek in this way is to humble the heart before God, surrender self, repent, receive His righteousness, do every known duty, confess faults to God and to one another and be healed, and cleanse from impurity to perfect holiness. Those who seek thus may be hid, meaning they are given the hope of being sheltered and safely kept by holy angels and held by Jesus when wrath falls on those who reject His counsel.

Addressees and Urgent Call

The call is directed to the meek of the earth who have wrought His judgment, that is, to those who have obeyed His judgments, followed them, carried out what God requires, done every known duty, and kept His commandments. It is addressed to this obedient class, not to sinners in general. The meek who are thus described are urged to seek the Lord, to seek righteousness, and to seek meekness, a threefold seeking that belongs to a summons to gather together and to humble themselves before God. Seeking God in this way is the appointed way to find refuge.

The seeking must be done before the day of the Lord's anger comes, in the present time of probation while the Lord may still be found. It calls for humbling the heart before God and receiving His righteousness now, with earnest and persistent pleading rather than indifference. Readiness is a present work of repentance and character change, to be accomplished now during probation, not something accomplished when Jesus returns. This earnest seeking while probation remains open is preparation for coming calamities, the coming crisis, and the close of probation, through repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ, a call applied especially to the youth.

The warning was given amid impending judgment upon Judah, and it applies also to the judgment of the impenitent world at Christ's second coming. In its end-time setting the same call to seek the Lord, righteousness, and meekness before the day of the Lord's anger, with the hope of being hidden, applies to the coming crisis over worship. Then people must choose between God's Sabbath and the false sabbath, and those who remain loyal to God face persecution.

Seeking Meekness and Righteousness

Righteousness and meekness are precious gifts that do not grow naturally in the human heart, and they must be sought by each person with sincere, diligent and persevering effort. No one can wait passively for divine power to correct wrongs, for the refreshing comes only to those who do the work God requires of them, and those who excuse themselves from that work and neglect what God requires them to do for themselves will be found wanting when that day comes. To seek in this sense is to humble the heart before God, to surrender self, to repent, and to receive His righteousness. It is to do every known duty, to confess faults to God and to one another and to be healed of them, and to cleanse from all bodily and spiritual impurity so as to perfect holiness in reverence for God.

This seeking is an individual work between each person and God, calling for self-examination of the heart, repentance, humbling of self, and earnest, persistent pleading with God rather than indifference. It is not a warrant for criticizing others, and when obeyed it brings sweet unity among Sabbath-keepers. Even one who has failed to surrender fully to God may meet what is required by seeking meekness and the righteousness of Christ. Even those who have acted wrongly or have gone astray may meet what God requires if they live humbly, care for their own souls, and continue in repentance until Jesus comes, and by so living humbly and repentantly they may be sheltered in that day.

Seeking meekness is shown when grace softens the heart and opens it to Christlike love, especially toward those with whom one differs, so that one who has treated others harshly changes course and seeks the qualities Heaven approves. It is shown in gaining a meek and quiet spirit for humble duties, everyday trials, and small unnoticed tasks, with God's help and strength to meet difficulties, where willingness to be humble and serve brings blessing and neglect of small duties leaves one unprepared for greater responsibilities. It is shown in overcoming the desire for change, turning to God wholeheartedly, and making learning from Christ the first concern. It is shown in taking hold of the truth to be elevated by it and working earnestly, with concern to live so that unbelievers have no occasion to reproach the faith rather than fear of being like the world. So too the church in Jackson was to seek through thorough self-examination and purging of wrongdoing, that God might again regard it with love and compassion.

Hidden in Day of Anger

Those who seek in this way may be hid, for the promise holds out the possibility of being sheltered and kept safe in the day of the Lord's fierce anger. Seeking God is the way to find refuge, and those who seek may be hidden when His anger comes. The call is given amid warning of judgment and belongs to a summons to gather and humble themselves with earnest, persistent pleading rather than indifference.

The sheltered will be safely kept by holy angels while wrath falls on those who reject counsel and commandments, through doing every known duty and confessing faults to God and one another to be healed from them. The humble in heart are held by Jesus and will not be left to perish at the hands of the wicked, for in view of coming trouble meekness and lowliness mean surrendering self before God. Being hidden means being wholly given to God and having the life hidden with Christ in God, with readiness completed before the time of trouble comes.

Seeking now is preparation for coming calamities, the coming crisis, and the close of probation, through repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ while the Lord may still be found. The call applies especially to the youth to seek God earnestly and prepare while probation remains open. Seeking these qualities prepares for heaven and eternal life, while neglecting the merciful invitation brings condemnation in the judgment.

Those who excuse themselves from and neglect the work God requires them to do for themselves will be found wanting when that day comes. They must not be indifferent or wait passively for divine power to correct their wrongs, but must make persevering effort to cleanse themselves from bodily and spiritual impurity and defilement and to perfect holiness in reverence for God, because the refreshing comes to those who do the work God requires.
