Zephaniah Rejoices With the People of Zionby emmanuel_higgins

Zephaniah 3:19

Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame.

At that time God Himself will undo all that afflicts His people and deal with their oppressors, saving the helpless and faltering who halt, gathering those driven out and scattered, and giving them praise and fame among all peoples in every land where they were put to shame. That honor is joined to turning back their captivity before their eyes and bringing them again to an honored place and a name before the nations. It belongs with taking away judgments and casting out the enemy, with the Lord the King in the midst so they see evil no more, with the call to fear not and let not the hands be slack, and with the mighty God in the midst to save, rejoicing over them with joy and singing, after punishment of every deceitful tongue that caused them to err. The gathering is accomplished by the great gift of the Son to seek and save the lost, when Christ clothed His divinity with humanity and poured out His life on the cross for the one lost sheep, in which the Father gave Himself to receive back the lost, and by whose stripes the halted are healed and all heaven is enlisted for their recovery. It belongs to the near coming of the Lord and to this present time, when God will make His covenant-keeping people a praise in the earth as they stand true in unity and unselfish ministry, guarding one another's interests and lifting the burdens on His languishing instrumentalities, and He will work with mighty power through humble faithful men who labor together with Him to seek the lost, moving forward courageously in assurance of His presence.

Promise of Restoration

At that time God Himself will undo and remove all that afflicts His people, dealing with those who afflict them. He will save her that halteth — the helpless, weak, vulnerable and faltering — and gather her that was driven out and scattered. He will get them praise and fame in every land and among all peoples where they have been put to shame and disgrace, turning their shame into honor and a good name among the nations. This vindication and restoration replaces their shame with praise and fame among the nations.

The praise and fame are joined to bringing His people again and turning back their captivity before their eyes. In that bringing back from captivity God gives His people an honored place and a name before the nations, making them a name and a praise among all people of the earth.

The verse belongs with gathering them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, to whom reproach was a burden. It stands after punishment of every deceitful, lying tongue that caused His people to err and to turn from righteousness. It belongs with taking away judgments, casting out the enemy, and the King of Israel the Lord in the midst, so they shall see evil no more. It belongs with the call to fear not and let not hands be slack, and with the mighty God in the midst to save, rejoicing over them with joy, resting in love, and joying over them with singing, ending in glad rejoicing with all the heart.

Salvation Through Christ

The gathering promised is accomplished by the great gift of the Son to seek and save that which was lost. At that time God undoes all that afflicts His people and saves her that halts and gathers her that was driven out and gives them fame and praise in every land where they were put to shame, because Christ humbled Himself, clothing His divinity with humanity to lift up the lowly and pouring out His life on the cross for the one lost sheep. In that giving the Father gave all heaven, for God the Father gave Himself in His Son to have the joy of receiving back the sheep that was lost. The cross in this way tells the depth and breadth of infinite love and the greatness of the Father's love. The Lord God in the midst of His people is thus mighty to save, rejoicing over them with joy and singing and resting in His love, gathering them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, bringing them again and turning back their captivity before their eyes to make them a name and a praise among all people of the earth.

By His stripes the halted are healed, for the Highest who was with the Father before the world was submitted to humiliation and suffered in human form. He was lacerated with stripes and bruised for iniquities, bearing the chastisement of peace. In that suffering He proclaimed Himself the Advocate of the sinful family, pouring out His love as a mighty Helper to suffering beings. All heaven is enlisted to recover the guilty lost sheep, beseeching His laborers to join the work, and all the resources of heaven are at the command of workers to bestow upon perishing souls.

Call to Faithful Service

The promise belongs to this present time and to the time of the near coming of the Lord, when human agencies unite with heavenly intelligences in unselfish ministry. It comes after the punishment of every deceitful, lying tongue that has caused His people to err and to turn from righteousness, when God gathers those who are sorrowful for the solemn assembly and to whom reproach was a burden. At that time He Himself undoes all that afflicts them, saves her that halts, gathers her that was driven out, gets them praise and fame in every land where they were put to shame, brings them again, makes them a name and a praise among all people of the earth, and turns back their captivity before their eyes. Those who realize the nearness of the Lord are to act their faith by this promise. This is a wonderful representation to be taken in, joined to taking away judgments, casting out the enemy, the King of Israel the Lord in the midst, seeing evil no more, the call to fear not and let not hands be slack, the mighty God in the midst to save, rejoicing over them with joy, resting in love, and joying over them with singing, ending in glad rejoicing with all the heart.

God will make His covenant-keeping people a praise in the earth when they stand true to His honor and carefully guard one another's interests in unity. He entrusts money and advantages to His stewards to minister blessings and gifts to one another, so there is continual praise to God. When one of His instrumentalities is languishing or in peril, those heart and soul in the work are to manifest interest and unitedly take of the Lord's own substance to lift the burdens resting on His institutions. As they do His sacred work in the earth as His hand of ministration, the Lord will co-operate with them. In that co-operation He blesses them with still greater temporal and spiritual advantages and honors them above the transgressors of His law.

God will work in behalf of His afflicted people who love and serve Him, being with them and not suffering them to become a reproach. He will purify all who yield themselves to Him and will make them a praise in the earth. Nothing in this world is so dear to God as His church, and He will work with mighty power through humble, faithful men in His work of saving souls. As the great Teacher He calls the indolent to obtain a living connection with the Source of all power and to be laborers together with God in seeking the lost. Those who belong to Him are to move guardedly, doing always what the Lord commands, and to move forward courageously in assurance of His presence with them.
