A rural roadside schoolhouse stands on a grassy rise beneath a bright blue sky. The long, cream-colored wooden building has a red roof, shuttered windows, a small cupola with louvered openings, and a short staircase leading to the entrance. An American flag flies from a tall pole beside it. Bare deciduous trees frame the scene, while wooden telephone or utility poles and wires recede along a muddy, winding road in the foreground. Low vegetation, evergreen trees, and distant woodland surround the quiet settlement; no people, animals, or visible lettering appear.
WILLIAM MILLER
A decorative arrangement of two stacked, dark brown leather-bound Bibles rests at the center, their gold-edged pages and embossed borders clearly visible. The covers and spines are labeled “HOLY BIBLE.” Behind and around the books are clusters of broad green leaves, while long cream-colored ornamental scrolls curl outward on both sides and rise above the books, with shaded golden undersides and rolled ends. The objects sit against a plain warm parchment-colored background, creating a symmetrical religious emblem-like composition.

JOHN VIEWING THE HOLY CITY
A broad, picturesque cityscape stretches along the far bank of a wide, rippling body of water. The skyline is filled with ornate domed buildings, tall slender minarets, cylindrical towers, arched façades, and monumental structures with colonnades, rendered in warm sandstone and turquoise, bronze, and cream-colored roofs. Dense green trees and shrubs line the waterfront and partly conceal the lower buildings. The calm foreground water reflects the architecture and vegetation in broken blue-green and gold bands beneath a pale, open sky.

JOSEPH BATES
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The Sanctuary
A vast desert encampment spreads across a sandy basin beneath dramatic, cloud-filled skies and a brilliant setting sun. Hundreds of brown and tan canvas tents fill the foreground and middle distance, with numerous small figures in long robes moving among them, gathering in groups, or tending supplies. A large fenced compound with a prominent tent occupies the lower right, while scattered animals and pack loads appear nearby. Behind the camp rises a massive rugged rock formation, surrounded by layered mountain ranges and illuminated by strong golden rays breaking through the clouds.

A decorative woodcut-style landscape scene is framed by an ornate brown-and-gold architectural border with winglike scrollwork at the top and bottom and curling leafy vines on both sides. Inside the frame, a large leafless, gnarled tree stands prominently on a grassy hillside, its branches spreading across a swirling blue-and-cream sky. Layered green and brown hills recede behind it, while pale billowing clouds gather near the horizon. The composition contains no visible people, animals, signs, or lettering.

A stylized symbolic composition shows a small burning candle centered on a broad bronze-gold pedestal, its bright flame rising against a pale parchment-colored background. Long, looping bands in deep navy blue and golden brown weave, cross, and curl across the entire scene behind and around the candle, forming large horizontal oval shapes and intertwined arcs. Additional details on the pedestal include a small circular ring on the left and a pointed triangular ornament on the right. No people, animals, lettering, or other text are visible.

A white dove with outstretched wings flies at the center of a radiant golden sunburst. It is encircled by an arched wreath of dense green foliage and colorful flowers, including pink roses and blossoms, blue flowers, and yellow blooms. A broad cream-colored ribbon with blue shading winds around the lower wreath and extends outward in curling, undulating tails on both sides, tied into a large bow beneath the center. The composition is decorative and symmetrical against a warm, parchment-colored background, with no visible lettering.

Four angelic women in flowing white robes stand in a row beneath a luminous, cloud-filled blue and gold sky. Each has large feathered wings and raises a green palm branch overhead, their faces turned upward with reverent or uplifted expressions. The figures overlap across the composition, with the central angels most prominent and the outer figures partly cropped by the edges. Their robes are gathered at the waist, and the softly glowing atmosphere gives the scene a peaceful, triumphant, heavenly character.
THE ASCENSION OF CHRIST
“Elisha Evans,” St. Helena, California.
A close-up still life shows five tall, antique leather-bound volumes standing upright together on a wooden surface or shelf. Their brown and dark gray spines have raised bands, decorative horizontal gilt lines, and textured, worn leather. Gold lettering identifies the set as “Vol. 1 The Desire of Ages,” “Vol. 2 Conflict of the Ages,” “Vol. 3 Conflict of the Ages,” “Vol. 4 Conflict of the Ages,” and “Vol. 5 Conflict of the Ages.” The books are arranged in a slightly staggered row, with their page edges and covers visible at the top and a softly blurred warm-toned background behind them.
MRS. WHITELAW'S LAST PHOTOGRAPH
A single tall candle burns at the center of a dark, textured scene. Its bright yellow-orange flame rises dramatically, surrounded by radiating golden beams and small dark streaks, while thick white wax drips down the cream-colored candle. The candle stands in a shallow, brown dish or holder with a dark, mottled central stem, and wisps of pale gray smoke curl upward and around it on both sides. The background is deep brown, purple, and blue-black, rendered with dense crosshatched marks that emphasize the candle’s warm glow. No people, animals, or lettering are visible.
