Our Next Issue

OUR NEXT NUMBER (DECEMBER 20) WILL OPEN THE GREAT SUBJECT OF MAN'S FALL AND THE GREAT GOSPEL PLAN OF REDEMPTION, SHOWN BY TYPE AND SYMBOL IN THE PAST; BY ACTUALITIES IN THE PRESENT.
A STUDY OF INTENSE INTEREST.

The Mother and the Child.

No person who ever walked the earth, save our Lord Jesus, has appealed more strongly to devout artists than the Virgin Mary. That superstition has had its share in it, is true without question. Yet, we are glad that the great and beautiful thought of motherhood is emphasized as in the four pictures of the mother and the child which appear on pages 6 and 7 of this issue. The human mother brings our Lord's humanity nearer; it makes Him seem more like a brother beloved to know that His infant head was pillowed upon the bosom of a modest, pure, loving, earthly mother. She is painted by different artists as representing different nationalities. She was a representative mother. Jesus is represented in many national types. He lived and died for all; He is the Saviour of all. The thought of His infancy ought to bring Him nearer, and lead us more than ever to regard tenderly, as did He, the mothers.

The “Signs of the Times” for 1910

PERFORMANCE is better than promise, and the editors and publishers of this paper purpose to follow the performance plan. The Special Home Bible Study Series will continue till April 1, 1910. After that something better. It will be Home Bible Studies still. We expect to deal with the great prophecies of the Word in a way we can not do in our present symposium. No journal published in the world will give more up-to-date Bible truth to its readers than will the SIGNS OF THE TIMES during the year 1910.
Now is the time to subscribe. After January 1, 1910, the subscription price of the paper will be increased to $1.75 a year. Now it is $1.50 a year, or at that rate for two or more years. For five years it is only $6.50.
Many of your friends and neighbors are taking no religious paper, who would subscribe for one if its merits were properly set before them. Help us to spread the Gospel message the SIGNS OF THE TIMES is heralding to the world.

How Does It Strike You?

HERE are two orders received for the SIGNS OF THE TIMES in one day's mail:
“I wish to enter upon your list of subscribers, beginning with your synopsis number of November 24, my own name and the names of my four children. I have read the SIGNS much during the past twenty years, and by so doing have gained a knowledge of the Bible which I never would have had otherwise. Enclosed find draft for $5.00.”
“I have let my subscription to the SIGNS expire, but I believe you will pardon me when you know that I was waiting until I could see my neighbors and get them to send with me. We live in a mountainous place and the people are not near, so it took lots of walking, but I had a delightful time. I do not believe you know how nice your neighbors are until you have called on them with the SIGNS. I send you fourteen names for six-months subscriptions. Enclosed please find amount to pay for them.”
Now are there not others who can do similar work? Renew before 1910 at the old price, $1.50, and remember others. The SIGNS to your neighbors or friends this year may be a matter of everlasting life.

A Year of Our Little Friend

“Our Little Friend” closes the year and begins the new year with a double number and a beautiful cover in colors. It is full of good things, too. It gives splendid promise of the year to come. And let us say it again: Now is a good time to give a present to your child, your neighbor’s child, your little niece or nephew or grandchildren, a present which will be new and fresh and welcome and beneficial every week. If before 1910 begins, it is only fifty cents; it will be sixty cents after that. What an opportunity to do a family good for a whole year, new every week. It is worth more than fifty-two fifty-cent boxes of candy. Send to “Our Little Friend,” Mountain View, Cal., fifty cents for one year’s visits. Do it before you forget it.

Our Moon

Prof. T. J. See, an astronomer in charge of Mare Island Observatory, California, has a new theory regarding the moon. One statement is that it has no craters. The craters are great indentations caused by the falling of meteors or planetoids, or where the moon was battered about when it was a wanderer. Another is that the moon was never a part of this earth, as the nebular theory teaches, but was a wanderer through space till captured by the earth. Since that it has been held in leash. This demolition of hypotheses on the part of the scientists themselves recalls again a statement made by Professor Larkin of the Mount Lowe Observatory not long ago, that he was certain of only one science, namely, that of mathematics. One may be certain of another, and that is the science of salvation in Jesus Christ. Surely when the men of science do not agree, the Bible ought to have a hearing.

Clergymen in Parliaments

In the British Parliament clergymen must not sit; only ex-clergymen can do so. But not so in other lands, as Russia, Italy, Germany, and France. In the German Reichstag no fewer than thirty-three Roman Catholic priests have seats; consequently the tremendous influence of what is called “The Center” or the clerical contingent of the Reichstag; and the clerical influence in the parliaments of Europe is having a tremendous effect in these days.
