The Living Power of God’s Word

Dr. F. C. Monfort, one of the most influential editors of the Presbyterian Church, being the editor of the Herald and Presbyter, of Cincinnati, made the charges in the recent Presbyterian General Assembly in Atlanta, that the Union Theological Seminary teaches “pantheism” and “Hindu philosophy.” He declared that the teachings of the seminary were opposed, in many respects, to the Presbyterian churches, and that preachers are turned out who “do not believe in the inspiration of the Bible or the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” We wish that the Union Theological Seminary were alone in the teachings that break down the influence of the Bible, and which at the same time are given forth in the name of the Bible. God’s word is full of power and life; and every individual who gains a living experience in it, knows that it is true. He also knows how hollow and unsatisfying are all the tenets and dogmas of theology which teach a great many things about the Bible and which do not teach the sacred truth of the Bible itself. The one great need of the world at the present time is that knowledge of the living God which comes through a respectful and reverent belief in the inspiration of His divine word. There is nothing that gives such breadth of mind, such greatness of heart, and such true nobility of purpose, as the sentiments expressed by the divine Teacher in His sacred Book. Some of the greatest minds in this and in all preceding ages have been those which have received their light and guidance from the Book of which the infinite Creator is the Author. It is said that Dr. Monfort was intensely in earnest and spoke with great emotion when he was denouncing the teaching of the seminary. We are glad for the true-hearted men that still find their highest ideals in the great Book of God, and who believe that it should be taught in its purity and strength.

Campaign for National Prohibition

The Anti-Saloon League has launched a strong campaign in the interests of national prohibition. It feels so encouraged by what has been accomplished by the temperance forces, that it believes an amendment to the Constitution can be secured that will prohibit the sale of intoxicating liquors throughout the entire United States. And so they are taking hold vigorously of the preliminary work necessary in securing such an amendment. The California section of the Anti-Saloon League will hold a conference in San Francisco June 17 and 18 for the purpose of launching the campaign in this state. Other states will take up the same good work. It is incumbent upon every believer in true temperance to do everything possible to advance the cause of prohibition, and prohibition can never meet with success until it becomes nation-wide. We may not achieve complete success in this undertaking, but our work holds back the forces of evil that are represented in the liquor traffic, and it is our duty to present a solid front and do all in our power in this direction.

General Conference Reports

Owing to the fact that there will be no paper next week, we have given considerable space to the editor's reports from the General Conference. As suggested in one of his paragraphs, these reports have been delayed because of his illness during the first part of the conference.

No Paper Next Week

Following the usual custom of omitting an issue in the middle of the volume, there will be no paper next week. Those who are following the Bible Band will observe that we have furnished a schedule for two weeks in the usual place on page 2. This is to provide for next week also, when no paper will be printed.

Founding Principles of the Nation

This issue of the paper is the last one to come out before our national Independence Day, July 4. We would call particular attention to the quotations found on page 8 from some of the leaders in the founding of this government. They are quotations that set forth briefly the principles that governed in establishing this great nation. It is very befitting that these principles should be considered anew in connection with our great national Independence Day.

Unusual Weather and the Signs of the Times

Floods visited Wisconsin, Idaho, and Minnesota during the month of May. And in the Middle West unusually hot weather prevailed. In fact, May has had weather that is not expected before July and August, the thermometer in a number of places registering as high as 107°. There were quite a number of prostrations from the heat. If you will take the pains to observe these things, you will see that from year to year the heat of the summers is growing more and more intense, and the casualties from sunstroke are becoming more numerous. The seasons are unusual. We have things in May that we naturally would not expect until June or July. For instance, we used to think that the country was immune from tornadoes in winter and the early spring months, and that only the summer, with its intensely heated centers, would give us these terrifying storms. But these theories have all been shattered to pieces by the events of the past winter and spring. The people of this world should be awakened to the fact that we are passing through very unusual conditions in almost every aspect with which our planet has to do, and they should study to know the meaning of it.

Papal Influence and Prophecy

The despatches state that the pope has written a letter of felicitation to the German emperor on the twenty-fifth anniversary of his imperial reign. The pope is becoming more and more popular with the crowned heads of Europe, and they are seeking his counsels and his influence with ever-increasing solicitation. It is well for us to keep an eye on these things, because the prophecies of the book of Revelation unmistakably show that the power of the Papacy will unite Europe and the Orient in one great empire of world dominance and persecution, as a climax to this world's history, just before the second coming of Christ. The prophecy has spoken, and the events tending in that direction are unmistakable.

Labor Unions Oppose Ambassador Page

An effort is being made to discredit our ambassador to Great Britain, Mr. Walter H. Page, because his great printing plant was not affiliated with the labor-unions. He is said to have paid the highest union wages to his employees, and to have given them the best of treatment; but because his shop was not in the union, the labor organizations of Great Britain are being stirred up to make his task over there very difficult for him.

London Peace Congress Adjourns Without Settlement

The peace congress in London, which was called for the purpose of settling the difficulties between the Balkan allies and the Turkish power, adjourned on June 9 without having reached any satisfactory settlement of the case in hand. In the meantime the despatches say that war is brewing in the Balkan States, and may break out at any time among the allies themselves.

Alaskan Volcanoes in Eruption

A few weeks ago reports came by steamer from Alaska to the effect that there were indications that some four of the volcanoes in that region would soon burst into active eruption. Advices just received state that all the volcanoes along the Alaskan peninsula and adjacent islands are actively belching forth their flames, smoke, and lava.

Japan’s Land Ownership Dispute

It is reported that Japan is backed by an alliance with Germany in making her efforts to compel the United States to yield to her terms on the question of land ownership in this country. The reports are that she is determined that the Japanese shall be granted not only property but citizenship as well in this nation.

French Loan May Challenge Monroe Doctrine

A despatch says that Mexico has made a contract with a group of French bankers for a loan of $75,000,000. If French capital is invested in Mexico to that extent, there will probably be occasion for difficulties in maintaining the Monroe doctrine.

Government Armor-Plate Factory

A resolution has been introduced in the United States Congress authorizing the erection of a government armor-plate factory. The claim is made that the government is paying too much toll to the trusts by having armor-plate made by contract.

Bible Reading Required in Pennsylvania Schools

The governor of Pennsylvania has signed a bill which requires that ten verses of the Bible must be read daily without comment in the public schools of his state. Teachers who violate the law are subject to dismissal.

Death of Poet Laureate Alfred Austin

Alfred Austin, the poet laureate of England, died June 2, and his body was cremated at Golder's Green without any ceremony. Memorial services were held in the chapel royal at the St. James Palace at the same hour.

Thunderstorm in Sacramento

Sacramento, California, was visited by a thunder-storm on June 9. This is the fifth June electrical disturbance in the weather history of the city, and the first in nine years.

San Francisco Employs Policewomen

Japanese Colony Planned at Santos

The despatches state that 1,500 Japanese were landed at Santos, Brazil, May 15, to be the first ice-berg of a permanent colony in that place.

Grasshopper Army Invades New Mexico
