IN THE HEART OF THE SIERRAS
Earlier text: THE BATTLE CREEK SANITARIUM

FOR IMMEDIATE CIRCULATION.

"SUNDAY CLOSING OF THE MIDWINTER EXPOSITION" is the title of Sentinel Library No. 56. This tract has been called out by the assumption of the Christian Endeavor Societies and leading ministers in the matter of pressing the closing on Sunday of the Midwinter Fair in San Francisco. It is based on the fact that if the Exposition be opened on Sunday, no law, State, Federal, or Divine, will be violated. Furthermore it goes to show that the movement for Sunday closing has in view the further purpose of a precedent for a State Sunday law. This important matter should have an immediate and wide circulation on the Pacific coast, especially in California. It contains 8 pages, price, $1.00 per 100; $8.00 per 1,000. Address California Tract Society, 1059 Castro Street, Oakland, Cal.
"THE MIDWINTER FAIR—PETITIONS FOR SUNDAY CLOSING," is the title of a four-page leaflet issued as Sentinel Library No. 57. The matter is a reprint of an article in the San Francisco Examiner of October 14, 1893, and bears on the general principle of petitions, with special reference to the resolutions of San Francisco ministers to circulate petitions throughout the coast in behalf of the Sunday closing of the San Francisco Fair. It shows that such a petition cannot be to secure anyone's rights, as no one's rights are in jeopardy, and that it is an unwarranted assumption to petition for the deprivation of another person of his rights. It also shows that "the Sunday-closing petitioner now enjoys, and will enjoy with Sunday opening, all the rights and privileges which others enjoy." Price of this leaflet, 50 cents per 100; $4.00 per 1,000. Address California Tract Society, 1059 Castro Street, Oakland, Cal. Let it go broadcast throughout the coast.

The Average American Sunday

It is a fine bit of irony in which "Comforter" indulges in the Examiner of October 14 on the subject of "Don't Run the Machinery" on Sunday at the Midwinter Fair. He says:—
Have more singing and sacred concerts, so that church-going people may rejoice in the place, for this is a Christian nation, and the President kisses the Bible every four years, does he not? We do not yet know how much machinery will be running, for "eyes have not seen and ears have not heard" of the marvels of the Fair yet, but suppose that they will make nails and bob wire there, and suppose that ladies will run sewing machines, but we do not want to see such things on Sunday. Ah, yes, get the Salt Lake singers [Mormons] to sing on Sunday, for everybody wants to hear them, and you men know what nice things are, and let us have them, and in doing so you will come as near pleasing everybody as need be!
And that is about the average "American Sunday."

CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE

AND

—BIBLE HYGIENE—

This Book

treats the subjects of Temperance and Hygiene from a BIBLE STANDPOINT. A good idea of the scope of the work can be formed by a glance at a few of the chapter headings: "Effects of Stimulants," "Extremes in Diet," "Home Education," "Relation of Diet to Health and Morals," "Parental Responsibility," "Dress," "Consulting Spiritualistic Physicians," "Social Purity," "Hope for the Tempted," "Diet and Cleanliness of the Hebrews," "The Gospel of Health," etc., etc.
The book contains 268 large pages, is printed on heavy paper, bound in cloth, embossed, with gold title on back and front cover. It is a book that all should have in their homes. Price, marbled edges, $1.25; gilt edges, $1.50.

Early Days AND Men of California.

By W. F. SWASEY.
Over 400 octavo pages. Cloth, $3.50. Morocco, $6.00.
Says the author; "I have made no effort to compile dry, consecutive details of contemporaneous history, but simply to sketch a picture, imperfect as it may be, of life in California as I found it, while yet in its primitive, pastoral solitude, in contrast with the populous and thriving civilization which I have seen grow up around me."
Capt. Swasey is believed to be the oldest continuous resident of San Francisco.
The book gives the biographies of over 60 pioneers who came to California before the discovery of gold; and also of over 20 of the "men of '49," whom the author terms "argonauts" in contradistinction to those who came to California before the discovery of gold.

EARLY WRITINGS.

NEW EDITION. Comprises Experience and Views and Spiritual Gifts, volume 1. By Mrs. E. G. White. Cloth, price 75 cents. Address, Pacific Press Pub. Co., Oakland, Cal.

THE ATONEMENT.

The author, in a book of 368 pages, takes up this great central doctrine of the gospel, and treats it in two parts. Part first,

An Atonement Consistent with Reason.

In this he shows that the doctrine of an atonement through the medium of a voluntary substitute is consistent with reason. Part second,

The Atonement as Revealed in the Bible.

In this is discussed the plan of redemption through Christ, by which every sinner who accepts Christ will be justified; sin will be turned back upon the head of its originator; the earth will be cleansed from the curse; God's righteous government will be restored over the entire universe; and all who will not become loyal subjects of that government will be destroyed.
The book presents a CRITICAL AND EXHAUSTIVE TREATISE on this interesting subject, by a thorough Bible student, and wholly from a Bible standpoint, and cannot fail to be of great value to everyone who reads it.
Third edition, bound in cloth, embossed in black, with gold title on back and front cover.
Price, postpaid, $1.00.

FATHERS

OF THE

Catholic Church.

BY E. J. WAGGONER.
HISTORY repeats itself, because human nature is the same in all ages of the world. Hence, he who would know how to avoid error in the future, must know how errors have developed in the past. The "Fathers of the Catholic Church" shows the condition of the heathen world at the time of Christ, briefly states the principles of ancient heathen philosophy, and shows how the adoption of these principles by prominent men in the church, and the incautious lowering of the standard of pure Christianity, developed the Papacy, which was simply a new phase of paganism. It shows that by the time of Constantine every phase of the Papacy was fully developed, and was only waiting for supreme power. The chapter on

THE RESTORATION

From Eden to Eden

In the twenty chapters into which this book is divided, the author discusses the unity of the divine plan and the continuity of God's purpose through all the ages, showing that in all dispensations the truths constantly impressed upon the minds of the people have tended to one end,—the elucidation of one central idea,

THE RESTORATION

of the dominion which was lost in Adam:
CHAPTER I is a brief discussion of the Creation of the World; Man's Dominion and How He Lost It; the Origin and Authorship of Sin, with the divine remedy for its consequences.
CHAPTER II treats of the “Promise of God to the Fathers,” with all that it implied in heaven and on earth. In other chapters are discussed such subjects as “The Abrahamic Covenant;” “Righteousness through Faith;” “The Covenant with Israel,” the reasons for it, and the universality of its application; “The Return of the Jews;” “The World's History in a Dream;” “The Setting Up of the Everlasting Kingdom;” “The Hour of Judgment;” “The Fall of Babylon;” “The Seal and the Mark;” “Signs of the Second Coming of Christ,” and the responsibility of man in recognizing them; “The Resurrection of the Dead,” and what the doctrine involves.
THE LAST CHAPTER is a GRAND COMPILATION of the Promises of God in regard to the “Restoration of the First Dominion,” with a vivid portrayal of the earth's appearance and condition when clothed in the garb of Edenic purity and loveliness.
THE BOOK is substantially bound, and handsomely embossed with floral designs; gold title on side and back; heavy, cream-tinted, sized and super-calendered paper; size, 5½ in. x 9 in.; price, postpaid, $1.00; gilt edge, with side design embossed in gold, $1.50.

Books for Winter Reading!

THE YOUNG PEOPLE'S LIBRARY

Is a series of books for young people. Every one of these books has been carefully edited at first and then read and endorsed by a large committee. We can safely promise, then, that there is nothing objectionable in the series, and more, that it is a very valuable collection of books.
The long winter evenings are now coming on. This series of books will interest every member of the family.

PROCURE THEM NOW.

1. Fiji and Samoa.

Jottings from the Pacific No. 1 is a graphic and interesting description of the Fijian and Samoan Islands, their geographical position, their government and religion, their social and physical peculiarities, the wonderful productions of these islands, the coral formations of the Pacific, cannibalism, the curious traditions of the islands, the past and present funeral rites, cyclones in the coral seas, and many other things of interest.

2. Jack the Conqueror; or, Overcoming Difficulties.

"Resolve well, and persevere" is the excellent motto of the book, and is strikingly exemplified by the hero of the story. Jack so completely conquers one difficulty after another as to rise from a ragged, useless boy to an honored educator in cap and gown. The narrative is an incitement to nobler living, and it is pleasant, safe, and easy reading for boys.

3. Savonarola.

The life of this great preacher of Florence. The scene of the book is of course that land of romance and song and heroism, Italia, where the Apostle Paul and other witnesses of the truth finished the "good fight of faith." The little volume is a graphic sketch of the most prominent events of the preacher's life and experience, the monasticism of the fifteenth century, the iniquities that prevailed, the political influence of Savonarola, his trial and death.

4. The Tonga Islands and Other Groups.

Jottings from the Pacific No. 2. The history of many of the interesting island groups of the Pacific is comparatively unknown to ordinary readers except through the writings of missionaries. When international complications arise, as a year ago at Samoa, or, more lately, at Ponape, so little is known of the locality or the people that it is like showing pictures to the blind. This little volume gives something of the history of the Tongas, the Hervey group, and the Marquesas Islands, before they were visited by the missionaries, and indeed were hardly known to the first navigators of those seas. The habits of the people, their government, the vegetable wonders on shore, and the great wonders of the sea about them, are graphically told in a manner that cannot fail to entertain and instruct young readers.

5. Letters from the Holy Land.

This is a volume of letters from a father to his children describing such incidents and observations of travel as came under his own experience. They tell of such scenes as are often referred to in the Bible, and which we may look upon to-day much as did Christ or David, since the habits of the people have changed little in centuries. In the hand of a child it is a companion for his Bible stories, giving him a more intelligent understanding of the Word. The style of the sketches, though adapted to children, is not childish, but simple and entertaining for all.

6. Among the Northern Icebergs.

This little book contains very interesting sketches of the Arctic expeditions of England and America in the nineteenth century, and is full of instruction. Such books as this are very valuable not only for young people who would not read the larger ones, but for busy men and women who for the want of time cannot peruse them. The book is cheap, contains a number of handsome illustrations, is attractively bound, is written in a pleasing style, and is just the kind of reading to give to our young people.

7. Left with a Trust

Is a story of the struggles of a family to help "mother" and each other during the absence of the father, and pleasantly reveals the brighter side of youth where there is a worthy purpose and a will to be kind and affectionate.

8. Two Cannibal Archipelagos.

A graphic description of the New Hebrides and Solomon Islands. The luxuriance of their vegetation, the strange phases of animal life, the volcanoes and other natural curiosities, the manners and customs of the people, and the efforts to civilize and Christianize them, are all told in a lively and most entertaining style.

9. John of Wycliffe.

"The Morning Star of the Reformation." Every reader of the English Bible owes a debt of gratitude to this man, who had so much to do with placing the Scriptures in the hands of the people. The writer has sketched in striking outlines the great controversies of the times and the part that was taken in them by Wycliffe.

10. Native Life in India.

A most interesting description of the social and religious characteristics of the Hindus. The writer of this book spent eighteen years in India. The book is fully illustrated with cuts that are made from native sketches.

11. Martin Luther.

The name of this great reformer is well known in every household, and this story of his life, at home, at the university, as a monk, as a priest, at Rome, at the Diet of Worms, and finally the closing scenes of his eventful career, will be of deep interest to the young.

12. Life on the Kongo.

This short, though comprehensive, story of the new-old empire of the Kongo, in many respects the choicest portion of the "Dark Continent," cannot fail to interest young and old. The information given has the merit of being the product of the personal observation of the author and other well-known parties who have traversed the country which is so graphically described.
