Earlier text: The Impending Religious War

Below the Standard.

By F. R. Richmond

A VERY close observation is not required to notice the departure of the modern churches from the “old paths,” and that they are far below the standard erected by the word of God. Watch them through their yearly routine. Commencing the year with the excitement of great revivals, which usually result in the so-called conversion of large numbers, they appear to have some devotion, and to be accomplishing some good.

These converts consist largely of the young who, unless thoroughly converted, continually desire a change; and as the excitement wears away, the meetings become uninteresting to them. They are held less frequently, and as spring approaches, sugar parties, and still later, strawberry-festivals, take their place. These, with the picnics which follow, are means of retaining the young converts in the church; and while they do not tend, as they are conducted, to increase a love for sacred things in the hearts of the converts, they create in the older members a relish for worldly pleasure. As the year comes around, it finds a large portion of the converts apostatized, and the church in as great need of a revival as before—perhaps greater. If the order were reversed and the conversion of the church, to the world was requisite for the introduction of the millennium, we might have some ground for faith in its near approach.

A gentleman not professing religion brought his wife who is a Sabbath-keeper to the N. E. camp-meeting. The Methodists were holding a camp-meeting at the time but a few miles from the S. D. Adventists’; and as this gentleman had lived among the Methodists in his younger years, and was, perhaps, somewhat prejudiced in their favor, he attended their meeting one afternoon. They and their meeting came far short of his expectations formed from former acquaintance with them.

The ground was well arranged with all the conveniences for ease and pleasure. More pains seemed to have been taken to supply the demands of nature than were taken by the multitude who followed the Saviour into the desert; for at the boarding-house there was provided to feast the appetite a great variety of rich dishes, such as chicken, roast beef, spare-rib, cakes, pies, &c.

Just outside the ground our friend saw a swing made similar to a clothes-reel, to the arms of which were attached wooden horses, upon which persons were allowed to ride by paying the fare, the apparatus being operated by horse power. He supposed that this was an outside affair, and patronized only by the rabble; but what was his surprise as he entered the crowd gathered around it to hear one lady say to another, “Bro. A. preaches this afternoon.” “Yes,” was the reply, “he had commenced when I came away;” thus showing that, although a professor of religion, she was more interested in swinging than in the sermon.

Upon a small lake near the ground there were quite a number of pleasure boats to let to those who desired such amusement as they afforded; and the banks of the lake were covered by a crowd who seemed to enjoy this sport more than they would listening to a plain, cutting, practical discourse. Preaching that shows what sin is and the corruptness of the human heart is not the kind that takes well at such places. Our friend judged from the conversation he heard around the lake that nearly one-half of the company were church members. These had consented to lose a sermon for the sake of amusement. Our friend left the place convinced that the Methodists are not now what they once were, and feeling satisfied that, if they were right, and sure of Heaven, the path he was treading would take him there too. Is not this the class spoken of by Paul in his second epistle to Timothy as “lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying [by their actions] the power thereof”?

There may be no sin in a little simple recreation at the proper time and place; but when professing Christians are more interested in boating and swinging than in hearing the word of God, at a meeting, too, where every member ought to be interested in getting his heart right before God and laboring for his unconverted friends, it shows plainly that either the members, or the preachers, or both, are not up to the true standard of piety. They are in a fallen condition.

Expounders of the prophecies differ very much as to what is symbolized by Babylon, but the modern churches are very plainly fulfilling the eighteenth chapter of Revelation.

Tax on Words.

WHAT a pity there is not a tax upon words! what an income would result from it! but, alas! talking pays no toll. And if lies paid double, the government might pay off the national debt; but who could collect the money? Common fame is a common liar. Hearsay is half lies. A tale never loses in telling. As a snow-ball grows by rolling, so does a story. They who talk much generally lie much. If men only said what was true, what a peaceful world we should see! Silence seldom makes mischief, but talking is a plague to the parish. Silence is wisdom, and, by this rule, wise men and women are scarce. Still waters are the deepest; but the shallowest brooks brawl the most; this shows how plentiful fools must be. An open mouth shows an empty head. If the chest had gold or silver in it, it would not always stand wide open. Talking comes by nature, but it needs a good deal of training to learn to be quiet; yet regard for truth should put a bit in every honest man's mouth, and a bridle upon every good woman's tongue.

If we must talk, let us be free from slander; let us not blister our tongues with backbiting. Slander may be sport to tale-bearers, but it is death to those whom they abuse. We can commit murder with the tongue as well as with the hand. The worst evil you can do a man is to injure his reputation. The Quaker said to his dog, “I'll not beat thee nor abuse thee, but I'll give thee an ill name.” All are not thieves that dogs bark at, but they are generally treated as if they were; for most people believe that where there is smoke there is fire, and what every body says must be true. Let us then be careful that we do not hurt our neighbor in so tender a point as his reputation; for it is hard to get dirt off if it is once thrown on; and when a man is once in people's bad books, he is hardly ever quite out of them. If we would be sure not to speak amiss, it might be as well to speak as little as possible; for if all men's sins were divided into two bundles, half of them would be sins of the tongue. “If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.”

Gossips of both genders, give up the shameful trade of tale-bearing. Don't be the devil's bellows any longer to blow up the fire of strife. Leave off setting people by the ears. If you do not cut a bit off your tongues, at least, season them with the salt of grace. Praise God more and blame neighbors less. Any goose can cackle, any fly can find out a sore place, any empty barrel can give forth sound, any brier can tear a man's flesh. No flies will go down your throat if you keep your mouth shut, and no evil speaking will come up. Think much, but say little; be quick at work and slow at thought; and, above all, ask the great Lord to set a watch over your lips.—Sel.

Our Paper.

By Julia E. Green

We love it; and I often wonder if every denomination so highly prizes its paper as we do ours. Every week the REVIEW comes to us laden with a feast of fat things. It contains words of cheer to the weary and disheartened, words of comfort to the sorrowing, words of admonition to the erring, and invitations to the wanderer to return to the fold. It contains news, good news of progress from all parts of the field. These are a few of the many good things served up to us weekly by our faithful friends at the Office.

When I read the short, well written articles from the pens of so many contributors, I feel a strong desire to add my mite. “You do not know how much good your piece did me,” said one friend to another. I thought, Truly, we do not know how much good we can do. We may never know that our efforts have been blessed to the good of any, but it may be none the less our duty to speak, though we have but one talent and that a very small one. We know not but some despairing soul may be stirred up to a new effort for victory by our broken remarks. I have many times begun to write, and have laid aside the articles incomplete. “We shall be judged by what we do, not by what we thought to do.” God is looking at us too, and can see if we are really desirous to improve. Let us ever remember that the eye of a holy God is upon us, and that for all our words and actions we must render an account.

Poor in Spirit.

By Noah W. Vincent

“BLESSED are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” Matt. 5: 3.

Unmistakable characteristic of the saint! precious blessing, too, from the lips of our Lord Jesus—blessing that includes all others to eternity! Dear brethren, let us feel that in us dwelleth no good thing—that our sufficiency is of Christ. How bright was the example of spirit-poverty in the Syro-Phœnician woman. She welcomed being likened to a dog if she might partake of the crumbs from the Master’s table. The rich young man, trusting in self and riches, went away sorrowful, while the poor leper who said, “Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean,” went away happy in God.

All fulness is in Christ; but to receive of it we must feel our need, and then ask in faith. Beloved fellow-servants, let us humble ourselves, accept gratefully even that service which may seem least at the bidding of our loving Master, and be faithful in its performance. The time of refreshing, rest, and unending gladness draws near. Christ will soon appear in power and great glory. All shall then be made new. Then shall the poor in spirit realize the fulfillment of the promise that theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. Let us so act in the time of conflict, suffering, and reproach, that we may share in the triumph, joy, and glory. NOAH W. VINCENT.

President Porter's Advice to Yale Students

PRESIDENT PORTER, of Yale College, recently gave the following laconic advice to the students in the course of an extended address: “Don’t drink. Don’t chew. Don’t smoke. Don’t swear. Don’t deceive. Don’t read novels. Don’t marry until you can support a wife. Be earnest. Be self-reliant. Be generous. Be civil. Read the papers. Advertise your business. Make money, and do good with it. Love God and your fellow-men.”

The Art of Life.

A GREAT part of the art of life consists in the skill with which a man will do, in the right time and in the right way, what he has to do. A man should school and train himself to seize the passing moment and to secure every advantage of position. The knack of doing these things, or the art of it, comes from practice alone. This is an art very hard to acquire, even in that rudimentary form which consists in an orderly and thoughtful way through the business of the day. It is, perhaps, for this reason that the great majority of people are not brought to the necessity of learning this lesson for themselves.

Most people have their hours of work rigidly marked out to them. Their hours are from ten to four. They go forth to their work, and do their labor until the evening. They are not intrusted with any power of option. The clerk must be at his office, the school-master with his pupils, the doctor on his rounds, and the barrister in the courts while the judges are sitting. They are constrained by a net-work of circumstances for which some of them cannot be sufficiently grateful. The whole business of life would fall out of gear if the steadiness of its transactions depended on their volitions.

Then there are many people, the fine ladies and gentlemen of the world, who do not obey such laws, but are a law unto themselves. There are the students, and artists, and thinkers, who are left unfettered by precise lines of days and hours and seasons; they are left to their own need of exertion and sense of responsibility. I often think such men are raised from a lower to a higher stratum of life. They have mounted to a higher class in the great school of life. Things are left to their honor. Theirs is the possession of law in freedom, and of freedom in law.

Sometimes this liberty is a servile spirit. Men force themselves into the mechanical round from which they have been liberated. They surrender themselves to inflexible rules. They pursue their work pertinaciously, losing that sense of elasticity and freedom which it was intended they should possess. Such a man will not leave off to note some curious phenomena, to watch a sunset, to hear rare music, to listen to brilliant converse. He is hardly making the best use of things. It is a great art while carrying on the work of life to seize every means of rising beyond it.—Sel.

Swearing.

Of all bad habits, it would be difficult to name one that has less reason or provocation in it than that of using profane and vulgar language. When coolly viewed, the act of one human being calling violently on his Maker to deliver over his fellow-man to condemnation is wicked in the extreme; it is a vain and irreverent use of his Maker’s name; and it is the expression of a hateful and infernal wish. But leaving the wickedness of the habit out of account, it is useless and irrational. It brings no pleasure, nor comfort, nor relief. No swearer is ever the wiser, richer, or happier for his curses. He cannot inflict the evil he invokes. He may curse his enemy for a lifetime, without turning one hair of his enemy’s head white or black by the process. The language furnishes all the words and terms needed to give strength and vigor to expression, without resorting to oaths and curses. All the words needed to express indignation and wrath even are to be found in it. An oath does not give strength or emphasis to the truthful man’s yea; and all the oaths and maledictions that can be imagined cannot give an atom of strength to the liar’s nay.

Swearing is chiefly a habit. For the foul volleys of oaths and curses that the habitual swearer pours out in ordinary conversation, or on slight provocations, there is no shadow of excuse. They are a shame to himself, and a disgust to his acquaintances. Some men are such slaves to the vicious habit that they swear without knowing it; they converse in a dialect of oaths. They would be disgusted themselves if they could see one of their simple conversations taken down in short-hand and put in print, with coarse oaths bristling all along the line of their remarks. Profanity and vulgarity do not always go together, but they are apt to. The swearer is in danger of becoming vulgar, and the vulgar man is almost invariably a swearer. When both habits meet in the same individual, they make him intensely offensive to all pure-minded people. It is imagined by some that an occasional oath or a little vulgarity gives spice and flavor to conversation; but if it does, it is a very offensive flavor. There is nothing more charming than chaste and simple language, and it is worth any young man’s while to cultivate the habit of using it. An oath would not be considered a flavor to the conversation of a modest and beautiful maiden; neither can it be justly held to add to the spirit or piquancy of the conversation of a man.—Sel.

Finding a Place to Pray

Do not say you have no convenient place to pray in. Any man can find a place private enough, if he is disposed. Our Lord prayed on a mountain, Peter on the housetop, Isaac in the field, Nathaniel under the fig tree, Jonah in the whale’s belly. Any place may become a closet, an oratory, or a Bethel, and be to us the presence of God.

Small Things Reveal Character

As daylight can be seen through very small holes, so little things will illustrate persons’ character.

Obituary Notices.

“Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth.”

DIED, of consumption, near Cresco, Neb., Aug. 22, 1875, sister Hannah Hart, aged twenty-three years and seven months. Sister H. gave her heart to Jesus in early life, and became a member of the Mt. Pleasant church in Iowa. Although she was young when she came to Nebraska, where, till quite recently, she has been deprived of the society of others of like faith, she has been an honor to the cause she loved, and she died with a firm hope of having a part in the first resurrection. She leaves a husband and other friends to mourn their loss. She is missed in the church; yet we hope soon to meet her. Funeral discourse by the writer, Sept. 26, from Rev. 14:13.

CHAS. L. BOYD.

DIED, of consumption, at Richburg, Allegany Co., N. Y., Sept. 2, 1875, my beloved companion, Sarah A. Allen, daughter of Reuben and Lydia Griggs, aged fifty-four years and seven months. She embraced the Sabbath in 1840, and has faithfully kept it. She was patient during her sickness, and spoke often of her hope of immortality through Jesus Christ our great Redeemer. She often spoke words of comfort to her companion and child, entreating them to prepare to meet her in the morning of the first resurrection.

An Appeal

By James White

TO THE TRUSTEES OF S. D. A. PUBLISHING ASSOCIATION.

Dear Brethren: There is at your Book Rooms a large amount of reading matter which should by some means go into the hands of the people. And there are certain States the most destitute of religious reading, where our publications would be received with eagerness, which at the same time are most destitute of money to purchase them. We might here mention Missouri, Kansas, and Minnesota. And it is an interesting fact that in these very States where the money pressure is hardest, God is blessing the labors of his servants in a remarkable manner.

Minnesota needs help. The Tract and Missionary Society of that State is heavily in debt to the S. D. A. Publishing Association. And yet that branch of the T. and M. work needs more publications for the fall and winter campaign. We suggest that you donate to that State $500 on account, and that you also donate in books and papers the sum of $500. There are back numbers of the REVIEW AND HERALD which we would recommend you to send out to destitute fields at the rate of $1.00 per hundred. And there are also back numbers of the Health Reformer which we will furnish to the T. and M. workers of these States at the rate of $2.00 per 100 copies. These back numbers can be circulated in these destitute States to great profit.

And we would recommend you to donate to the T. and M. Societies of Kansas and Missouri, in tracts and back numbers of the REVIEW and Reformer, the sum of $500 each. These small appropriations would help these States very much at this time, and would not be felt by our Association.

For want of time we have not yet taken up the Tract and Missionary work in the REVIEW as we designed. Hope to be able to speak freely and fully on that subject next week.

J. W.

On receiving the foregoing, the Board of Trustees of the S. D. A. Publishing Association met and took action according to the suggestions made. The three Conferences named can therefore draw at their pleasure reading matter from this Association to the amount of $500 each.

The Association Meeting.

By Uriah Smith

A WORD of explanation may be necessary in reference to the call for a special meeting of the Publishing Association found in this number. When we accepted the office of President at the last yearly meeting, it was with no design or wish to hold that position for any great length of time. Bro. White, as we all know, is the person for that place. But circumstances were such at our late meeting that he did not see his way clear to accept the position; and we allowed our name to be used simply to bridge over the matter till more favorable circumstances should exist. Happily, the obstacles in Bro. W.'s way are now removed, and the object of the resignations that have been offered, and the meeting that is called, is to put Bro. W. into his proper position as President of the Publishing Association. He should also be Editor of the Review, and Bro. Waggoner, having his attention so fully occupied with matters pertaining to the cause on the Pacific Coast, has also resigned, making a vacancy on the Editorial Board.

We would be glad to see as many of the stockholders as may find it convenient to come; but we would say that none are under the necessity of coming, as any number assembled at a regularly called meeting, can legally transact business; and there are a sufficient number in Battle Creek to hold a meeting, should no others find it convenient, or specially desire, to be present on the occasion. U. S.

Praise for W. E. Dawson's Article on Sabbath Breaking

By Editor

We were happy to read, while away from the office, the excellent article from the pen of W. E. Dawson, on the “Enormity of the Sin of Sabbath Breaking,” published in No. 13 of present volume. Being a lawyer by profession, he brings the principles of legal discrimination well to bear upon the question in hand. We hope to hear from him often.

Family Health Almanac for 1876.

By Editor

OUR new Family Health Almanac is now ready for distribution. In view of its large circulation last year, we have this year prepared for a still larger circulation, so that all orders can be promptly filled.

Its table of contents includes something of value for every one. Many improvements have been made over the issue of last year. The calendar pages are re-arranged, so that they are much more convenient for reference than before. The chronological and astronomical data are unusually full. Useful sanitary hints are given for each month in the year, which are alone worth the price of the almanac. The body of the work is made up of short, concise articles on the more prominent subjects of health reform. A choice collection of practical recipes form the concluding portion of the work. This almanac should find a place in every family in the land, not only as an indispensable calendar for daily reference, but as a missionary of noble, elevating, vital truths.

This little work is offered at the following liberal rates:—

Single copies, postage paid, 10 cents. In quantities of fifty or more, one-half discount, postage added when sent by mail.

Special rates will be given to Tract and Missionary Societies, and to those who devote their whole time to canvassing for the Health Reformer and the Almanac.

Address, HEALTH REFORMER, Battle Creek, Mich.
