Relation of Food to Health and Efficiency

Special Fuels for Certain Furnaces—Scientific Connection Between What We Eat and What We Are
By D. H. Kress, M. D.
The human body may be fitly compared to a furnace and an engine combined. Engines are constructed for work, but they are valueless without steam and energy. In order to have steam and energy, there must be fuel. But fuel is of no value without air. Oxygen is needed to create combustion and keep the fires burning. Food is to the body what fuel is to the engine.

Fuel Must Suit the Furnace

Certain engines and boilers have large furnaces built expressly for wood. Others are built for coal; still others, for gas. It is possible, in an emergency, to burn coal in the furnace built for wood, or wood in the furnace built for oil. But it is not satisfactory. The furnace soon becomes clogged, and the fires will burn low.
In the animal creation, there are creatures so constructed that they can utilize, as body fuel, coarse substances, as grass, leaves, and herbs; and in the absence of these, they are able even to derive a certain amount of energy from the bark of trees and from tender twigs, which are suitable for furnace fuel only. Many of these creatures possess tortuous sacculated alimentary canals thirty times the length of their bodies. A tiger or a cat could not subsist on such foods, for the alimentary canal of the flesh-eating animal is too short, being only three times the length of the body.

Too Long or Too Short

In man, the alimentary canal is about ten times the length of the body. It is too short to get the maximum of nutriment out of the food provided for the herbivorous animals, and too long to make it safe to subsist on the food of the carnivora.
Man could not possibly subsist upon bark and twigs. He is capable, however, in the absence of better food, by cooking, to derive a certain amount of energy from many of the coarse roots and herbs that evidently were designed for animals with longer alimentary tracts.
The Creator understood what foods were best for each creature. Accordingly He gave to each his food. To man He said: “Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, . . . and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat”; and, “Of every tree . . . thou mayest freely eat.” Gen. 1: 29; 2: 16. Of the lower creatures it is said, “And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.” “It was so” at the beginning and until the fall. Man subsisted upon the food created for him, and the lower creatures upon the foods created for them.
There never was a time when there was more of a demand for doctors.
There never was a time when there was more of a demand for doctors.
There are many foods now used by man, and also by the lower creatures, which were not included in the original list of foods for either. While it is lawful to use these, it is not expedient or wise to do so, only in the absence of the foods specially created for each.
There is a certain plant which captures and digests insects. It has been found that this is due to the fact that these plants are frequently found on rocky soil, which lacks that much needed element nitrogen. Rather than starve, it captures insects, and thus obtains this necessary food element. If this plant is transplanted into soil rich in nitrogen, it is content with the original plan, and instinctively gives up its carnivorous habits, and ceases to devour flesh.

When Meat Diet Was Permitted

After the Flood, when all vegetation was destroyed, to Noah the command was given, in the absence of better food, “Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you.” Gen. 9: 3. For him to refuse to subsist upon meat under those conditions would have been suicidal. It would have been sin, for “life is more than meat.”
The commands given in the past regarding food apply with equal force to similar conditions to-day. In the absence of fruits, grains, and nuts, the command still is, “Thou shalt eat the herb of the field.” And in the absence or scarcity of the herbs as well as fruits, etc., the command is still, “Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you.” These commands to eat herbs and flesh are, however, conditional, or rather provisional.

The Two Purposes of Food

Food serves two purposes. It supplies material for building and repairing bones, muscles, nerves, and brain, and fuel for the production of heat and energy.
It is estimated that one part of the tissue-building material is required to every nine parts producing heat and energy. If a boiler were able to make its own repairs, and should require heat-producing elements and repair elements in the same proportion, then to every nine shovelfuls of coal put into the furnace there should be added one shovelful of iron filings or scraps. The human body is capable of making all its own repairs. Therefore to every nine parts of the heat-producing elements must be added one part of tissue-building material.

Fuel and the Tissue Builders

Starch, sugar, and fat form the natural fuel for the body, while protein and salts supply the tissue-building material. These various elements are arranged in wheat, oats, rice, barley, and other cereals, in about the right proportion to meet the body's needs. By subsisting upon these foods, very little anxiety need be felt in regard to getting an excess or deficiency of any one element.
Should an excess of starch, sugar, or fat be eaten, it would not be a serious matter, as this material would be stored up as body fuel in the form of fat. There is constant danger, however, of getting an excess of tissue-building material, since no provision is made within the body for an excess. If we should put into the furnace two shovelfuls of iron filings to every nine shovelfuls of coal, the extra shovelful would erelong clog the furnace, and would ultimately extinguish the fire. This is what actually occurs within the human body when daily an excess ofthe tissue-forming element is eaten. Even though it be burned up, it leaves behind a residue, popularly known as uric acid, which acts injuriously to the organism.
Should we add to the grains and the legumes a liberal supply of meat, which is composed wholly of muscle, we could not avoid getting an excess of that tissue-building material; and this, in time, would clog the living furnace and machinery. That is practically the condition which exists in gout, rheumatism, arteriosclerosis, and premature old age.

Bread Formerly — Meat Now

One hundred years ago, bread formed the principal article of diet in the United States. To-day we consume over two hundred twenty pounds of meat per capita annually, or about three fifths of a pound a day for each person. There is probably more meat than bread consumed.
Food may be harmful by having concealed within it products that are poisonous or injurious to the system; or it may be of a nature to undergo putrefaction readily within the alimentary canal, and thus become a poison.
Meat belongs to both classes. It has impurities concealed within it, which are injurious to the body; and it readily undergoes putrefactive changes within the alimentary tract. Meats are therefore not the most suitable foods for man.

Good Shoes from Poor Leather!

The idea prevails that it matters very little what man eats—that the digestive organs are capable in some way of transforming poor food into good tissue. It would be but little more absurd to expect a shoemaker to make a good pair of shoes out of poor leather, than to expect to build bones, muscles, nerves, and brain out of inferior food. Yet the majority are attempting to do this.
Then we wonder why there are so many nervous breakdowns, and so many premature and sudden deaths. These breakdowns and premature deaths are seldom due to the great amount of work accomplished.
A robust appearance is not necessarily an indication of health or efficiency. Frequently it is an evidence of degeneracy. The beer drinker, with flushed face and well filled vest, is considered a poor risk by insurance companies and by surgeons. The one who subsists largely on meats may have an abundance of tissue, but it too is of an inferior quality.

Why Not Disease-Proof Bodies?

One hundred years ago, we exercised less care in the erection of our city dwellings than we do at present. The destruction of a few of our large cities by fire has not merely led us to provide better fire protection, but in addition, we are now erecting fireproof buildings. The former inflammable building material will no longer answer the purpose.
We should also select better body-building material, and erect germ-proof bodies. Unless this is done, degenerous diseases will cause death to come early.
There probably never was a time when there were a greater number of chronic invalids in the United States than at present. There never was a time when there was more of a demand for doctors, nurses, hospitals, sanitariums, and asylums. It is estimated that three millions of people in the United States are constantly disabled on account of sickness. Many more are ailing, and unable to do justice to their work, neither do they have much enjoyment of life.
The greater number of nervous wrecks, and the rapid increase in the mortality rate, after the age of forty-five years, from heart failure, apoplexy, Bright's disease, diabetes, and other degenerative diseases, during the past half century, should teach us the need of constructing better and more enduring bodies.

The Body a Temple

In the Scriptures, the body is termed a “temple,” in which God desires His habitation. When Solomon erected at Jerusalem a temple as a “dwelling place for the Most High,” he was careful in the selection of suitable building material. He passed by the material used in the erection of ordinary buildings. Nothing but the very best would answer the purpose. Cedars were brought from Lebanon, and stones from afar. When the building was finished, a part of the interior was overlaid with pure gold. We should exercise the wisdom of a Solomon, and select the very best and cleanest food it is possible to get, out of which to build healthy and enduring bodies.
Daniel, the Hebrew captive in Babylon, when commanded to eat at the royal table spread with delicacies and impure foods, “purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank.” He requested, instead, that he might have “pulse to eat, and water to drink.” God honored Solomon by filling that temple with His presence. The same God honored Daniel by revealing in and through him His presence.

Still a Power at Ninety

Not only did the face of Daniel appear fairer and better than did those who ate at the royal table, but in all matters of wisdom he was ten times better. At the age of ninety, instead of being a dependent or an object of charity, Daniel was at his best intellectually. At this advanced period of life, he held the position of prime minister of the Medo-Persian empire; and so accurately and well was his work done, that his enemies had to admit that there could be no fault found with him except “concerning the law of his God.”
There are certain drinks and foods which destroy self-control, and tend to develop the animal within man. Among these may be mentioned beer, wine, and meats. Granted that good men use these; yet man can never, while subsisting largely upon such foods, become morally what otherwise he might.
Much of the misery and crime that exists in the world is traceable to intestinal poisoning. Unpleasantness in homes, which frequently ends in divorce, is often due to errors in eating and drinking. The impatience of the mother, the irritability of the children, and the unreasonable disposition of the husband and father, frequently find an explanation at the dinner table. What we eat and what we drink has to do with what we are, physically, intellectually, and morally; hence the importance of knowing how to eat and drink for health and efficiency.

One Twelfth Sober

THE Scandinavian countries have been pioneers in the war on rum. There are 500,000 total abstainers in Sweden, which has only six million inhabitants. The parliament of Finland, within the last few years, passed a nation-wide prohibitory law, which was vetoed by the Russian czar under the evil spell of his bureaucracy. We do not believe the czar would veto such a bill now.—Christian Herald.

German, Danish, and Swedish Tracts

Complete Lists Topically Arranged
The recent reduction of almost 50% in the prices of tracts in the German, Danish, and Swedish languages ought to encourage all to circulate them by the thousands. Furthermore, the lists have now been made almost entirely uniform with the English, making it very easy to select and order just the tracts desired. Our English-speaking people will find this a great advantage. In the topically arranged list below, price in language column indicates tract in that language. Slight difference of price on any one tract is due to the difference in number of pages. Send your order to your tract society. On orders for less than ten cents, include two cents extra for postage.

Ecclesiastical Empire the Next

PRACTICALLY all of the Old World is gripped in the bloodiest and most barbarous struggle that has ever cursed this sin-burdened earth. Such wholesale slaughter has never been seen before, for the reason that men in past generations have not been equipped with such machinery of destruction.
The United States, the one great western nation, is struggling, in the face of strong odds, to keep itself at peace. The spirit of war seems to have surcharged the very atmosphere of the whole of our planet. Thousands of men are looking in every direction for some human expedient that will bring this war to a close, and make impossible the occurrence of such again.
Everything goes to show that when the war is over, men will turn almost unanimously to the church power. It is affirmed that because the church has not had its rightful opportunity in the world, therefore we have had this indescribably destructive and “demoniacal war.”
In the Old World, the dominating power is Catholic, and hence that power will dominate in this new order of things which will be developed. In the New World, Protestantism is the dominating religion. The United States has been regarded as one of the greatest if not the greatest Protestant power of the world; but Protestantism in the United States is honeycombed with the “higher criticism” which practically rejects God’s word and leans to the human arm instead of divine power. In consequence of this condition among the Protestant churches, we find them federating and combining so that they may use their great force of numbers as a political machine. And a Protestant church in politics works in the same way exactly that the Catholic Church does when it is in politics.
Protestantism turning away from the Bible and from the strong arm of God’s power, according to the prophecy of the sacred Book, will make an image to the papal beast. This Protestant image, as the prophet declares, will exercise “all the power of the first beast before him,” or as translated by some, “in his presence.” Rev. 13:12. Then the prophecy goes on to tell the story of the despotic character of this “image” to the papal power; and since an “image” is made to the papacy, it will be closely united in league with it.
But this ecclesiastical empire, with apostate Protestantism in the New World in the lead, and with the papacy taking the lead in the Old World, will speedily ripen the harvest of earth. In that great climax, men will show that they have turned away from God and from His word, and are seeking the human arm of force represented in the civil state. The turbulent conditions in society cannot be controlled by any such program. Nevertheless, men will certainly believe that it can be done, and they will plunge into the effort with a despotic intensity.

It would not be possible, within the space of these paragraphs, to give the Bible arguments in support of these statements; but they have been given over and over again in our columns, and we desire to keep these facts prominently before our readers. They represent the great issue that is now before the world—the greatest that has ever confronted humanity in all its history.

Spirit of Violence

THOSE who are reading the papers day by day, are impressed with the violence that so suddenly breaks out. There is no need of calling attention to specific instances. Frequently different sections of the world are placed under martial law, in order to curb the spirit of the violent mob.
Men have been telling us that we have such a strong civilization in these times, things of that sort will become less and less; the “brotherhood of man” will supplant the “spirit of hate.”
Without any question Christianity has had a powerful effect in molding the world into better ideals, and bringing it to higher standards; but the Author of Christianity has never promised that this world as a whole will ever become good. Instead, He has told us that until the time of His second coming, the straight and narrow way will find few people in it, while the broad way will contain the multitudes.
But in this time, a large part of the multitude have seized counterfeit banners of Christ, and are claiming to be His, without being such in fact. And if the individual does not take the pains to have clear vision, his mind may become confused, so that he will not see things as they are. The Master has forewarned us that “many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” Matt. 24: 5.
We must study to know the Bible for ourselves, if we would not be deceived by the multitude who claim the name of Christ without knowing anything about the transforming power of true Christian conversion. The Christ of the Bible has forewarned us that the last days will be as were the days of Noah, full of turbulence, violence, and strife. And if we know the Word for ourselves, and are watching passing events, we must be impressed with the accurate fulfillment of these great prophecies.

Christianity and Five-Dollar Banquets

PROMINENT men representative of the “Federal Council of Churches” and of the “Church Peace Union” and of the “New York Peace Society” were sent to Japan some months ago to study the peace question and to work in the interests of peace. The object is certainly a very commendable one. The Christ who is the Prince of peace has pronounced a blessing upon the peace-maker. He has said that “they shall be called the children of God.”
But He has also warned us that a great many people whom He regards not will work in His name. “Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy name? and in Thy name have cast out devils? and in Thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.” Matt. 7: 22, 23.
So according to this text it is clear that Christ will not own all of the individuals who prophesy in His name. Of the Master it was said, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay His head.” Matt. 8: 20. This statement in regard to Him leads one to raise the query in his own mind as to whether or not the Lord Himself could have attended the banquet that was given in New York City when these peace representatives returned from Japan. Each person that attended had to pay $5.00 for the privilege of sitting at the tables. That may not seem like very much to wealthy people, but it is too much to pay for a dinner that is supposed to represent the meek and lowly Christ.
“Carping critics” are not needed in this world in these times, but the fear of being called a “carping critic” ought not to deter an individual from seeing that much which passes under the name of Christ in these times does not measure up to the presentation of Christ’s methods and plans of work as given in His word; and one of the greatest dangers before the world is that of being deceived by the false movements that will undertake to develop and foster the idea that we may have peace in this wicked world during the wickedest period of all its history.

The Closing Out of the Small Business Man

“LESLIE’S WEEKLY” suggests that “the reason why so many men are out of work is because so many little business shops and factories are closed.” And then the Weekly goes on to state, on the authority of the Wall Street Journal, that during the first six months of last year “fifty little woolen mills in New England towns went to the wall.”
Concentration and federation is becoming more and more the order of the day. We have concentration in business that is absorbing the small business man and making him merely a wheel in the great machine controlled by a few big men. Labor is being federated and organized, and accordingly it is coming more and more under the control and dictation of a few leaders. In like manner the religious organizations of the world are federating and combining.
Men talk the theory that this federation and combination plan will result in the promotion of the spirit of brotherhood and progress. But our common sense, if we had no other illumination, ought to show us that such tendencies as are so strongly in progress to-day must result inevitably in the stress of revolution and riot. It cannot possibly be otherwise.
But we are not left alone to the illumination of reason or common sense. The Bible is very specific and clear in telling us of the scenes of rioting and violence that will characterize the closing hours of time, and we see the forces already gathering that are without question to fulfill the inspired predictions.

Morality Dances

AN influential woman in New York City conceived the idea of having special society dances for the purpose of keeping wives and husbands together. She thinks, and others think, that these dances have proved a great success, and the plan is extending to other cities. The theory is that if the wife can be induced to attend such a dance with her husband, she will not become nearly so jealous if she sees him dancing with other women as she would if she remained at home and had to brood over the idea that he was out and she did not know where he was.
The sturdy people of a generation ago would have hardly thought of such a “reform” as this. But we are in an age that is vibrant with the “reform idea”; and because so many people are taking reform, the vast majority are hypnotized into the idea that everything is going along all right. But wise men and women will not allow themselves to be deceived. Men and women, husbands and wives, whose attachment for one another is so slender that they have to be held together by society dances, are hardly in a position to make strong moral units in society.

California Legislature Rejects Sunday-Law Measures

THE California Legislature has adjourned without passing any Sunday-law measures, although strenuous efforts were put forth to have such a measure placed upon the statute books of this state. However, four good measures dealing with the liquor traffic were passed: 1. For the abatement of “blind tigers”; 2. Prohibiting the sale of liquor adjacent to schoolhouses; 3. Making the possession of an internal revenue receipt prima facie evidence of guilt in certain “dry” territory; 4. Prohibiting the sale of liquor to drunkards or Indians. And may the good fight against the evil of intemperance keep up with ever increasing vigor.
