EBAL AND GERIZIM.

By G.

THESE two mountains, forming the opposite walls of a narrow valley in Palestine, were witnesses of some of the most solemn scenes of which we have record. The valley of Shechem holds a very important place in sacred history. It was here that Abraham built his first altar in the land of Canaan. Coming from Haran to Canaan, “Abram passed thru the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land; and there built he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him.” Gen. 12:6, 7. Here, too, Jacob pitched his tents after his sojourn in Mesopotamia. Here he dug the well which supplied the people with water for many centuries. Here he buried under an oak the images which his wives had secretly brought with them from Padan-aram. And it is said to be one of the most beautiful spots in all Palestine.

NABLUS (Ancient Shechem) AND MT. GERIZIM.

BUT the most notable event, that which indelibly fixes the place in mind, is the assembly of Israel soon after their entrance into the promised land. Moses had twice given direction concerning this convocation. The first record is given in Deut. 11:26–30: “Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; a blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day; and a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not known. And it shall come to pass, when the Lord thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest to possess it, that thou shalt put the blessing upon Mount Gerizim, and the curse upon Mount Ebal. Are they not on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the Canaanites, which dwell in the champaign over against Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh?”

THE second reminder of this obligation is found in Ch. 27:1–8: “And Moses with the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, Keep all the commandments which I command you this day. And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass over Jordan unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt set thee up great stones, and plaster them with plaster; and thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when thou art passed over, that thou mayest go in unto the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, a land that floweth with milk and honey; as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee. Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall set up these stones, which I command you this day, in Mount Ebal, and thou shalt plaster them with plaster. And there shalt thou build an altar unto the Lord thy God, an altar of stones; thou shalt not lift up any iron tool upon them. Thou shalt build the altar of the

Lord thy God of whole stones; and thou shalt offer burnt-offerings thereon unto the Lord thy God; and thou shalt offer peace-offerings, and shalt eat there, and rejoice before the Lord thy God. And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.”

THIS service was conducted just after the taking of Ai. “Then Joshua built an altar unto the Lord God of Israel in Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron; and they offered thereon burnt-offerings unto the Lord, and sacrificed peace-offerings. And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel. And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, as well the stranger as he that was born among them; half of them over against Mount Gerizim, and half of them over against Mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel. And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law. There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.” Joshua 8:30–35.

“ACCORDING to the directions given by Moses, a monument of great stones was erected upon Mount Ebal. Upon these stones, previously prepared by a covering of plaster, the law was inscribed,—not only the ten precepts spoken from Sinai and engraved on the tables of stone, but the laws communicated to Moses, and by him written in a book. Beside this monument was built an altar of unhewn stone, upon which sacrifices were offered unto the Lord. The fact that the altar was set up on Mount Ebal, the mountain upon which the curse was put, was significant, denoting that because of their transgressions of God’s law, Israel had justly incurred His wrath, and that it would be at once visited, but for the atonement of Christ, represented by the altar of sacrifice.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 502.

BESIDES this repetition of the law, it was to be rehearsed in the hearing of the people every seven years. “And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the solemnity of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles, when all Israel is come to appear before the Lord thy God in the place which He shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing. Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the Lord your God, and observe to do all the words of this law; and that their children, which have not known anything, may hear, and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.” Deut. 31:10–13.

THESE records show how important it is that people should know the law of God, and remember it. Wherefore should they know and remember it?—Evidently that they should obey it. “Fear God, and keep His commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.” Eccl. 12:13. It was because of disobedience to God’s law that “death passed upon all men.” Death came because of sin, and “sin is the transgression of the law.” 1 John 3:4. The Gospel of Jesus Christ calls attention to the fact that He gave His life to vindicate the law and purchase back the lives that sinners have forfeited by its transgression. Forgiveness of sin comes by faith in Jesus Christ (Rom. 5:1, 2), and by faith “we establish the law.” Ch. 3:31. G.

“HALLOWED BE THY NAME.”

By W. A. Colcord

THERE is great need for cultivating reverence for God. One way of doing this is to learn to speak the name of God with reverence. The name of God, the great Jehovah, should never be spoken in a light and flippant way. “Holy and reverend is His name.” We may well believe that angels mention that name with the greatest holy reverence, vailing their faces when they speak the name of God. And the name of Christ is equally sacred to them. They honor the Son even as they honor the Father. How inappropriate, therefore, that we, who are lower than the angels, should speak these names without due respect and becoming reverence. We should never speak of God or of Christ as we would of a horse, a house, or any other commonplace thing. Those who do so have no appreciation of the exalted character of God, of Christ, and of heavenly things. “Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.” W. A. COLCORD.

THE REMEDY FOR LEPROSY.

By J. O. Corliss

LEPROSY was considered as the most malignant, hence the most distressing and loathsome, of Eastern maladies. Wherever its symptoms appeared, however slight, the subject was quarantined until more definite knowledge was obtained. If it was shown to be a confirmed case of leprosy, the patient was sent permanently away from friends and home, to become a veritable outcast for the term of his natural life. Lev. 13: 38–46. Whatever he touched was counted unclean. The very air was polluted with his breath, and even his shadow was not permitted to fall upon others. If any came toward him, the law required him to cry, “Unclean, unclean,” to warn them of his proximity.

Leprosy was indeed a fitting symbol of the repulsiveness of sin, which the prophet describes as making the whole head sick and the whole heart faint, because the whole body is a mass of wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores, which have had no medical attention. Isa. 1: 5, 6. As there was no human cure for a case of confirmed leprosy (2 Kings 5: 5–7), so there is none for sin. Jer. 13: 23. Leprosy, however, has been cured by divine touch communicated thru faith (2 Kings 5: 10, 13, 14; Luke 5: 12, 13); so may sin also be removed in like manner. John 5: 9, 14; 8: 11.

The regulation of the Levitical ordinances required that when a leper thought himself healed of his malady, he was to be brought before the priest for examination, outside the habitations of Israel. If the decision rendered confirmed the afflicted man’s hope, he was to bring two living birds, one of which was killed in an earthen vessel over running water. The other bird was to be dipped alive, with hyssop, cedar wood, and scarlet, in the blood of the first bird, and this blood sprinkled upon the man undergoing the purification process. The living bird was then given its freedom. Lev. 14: 1–7. In harmony with the Levitical requirement, Christ ordered the man whom He had cured of leprosy to go and show himself to the priest, and offer for his cleansing as had been commanded, for a testimony both to priest and people. Luke 5: 14.

Christ is the High Priest before whom, as sinners, we must appear for cleansing from the leprosy of sin. To meet the requirements of our condition, we too must go forth “unto Him without the camp” (Heb. 13: 12, 13), and as the leper of old brought his offering for his cleansing, so must we also have somewhat to offer. Our offering, however, is but the plea that He Himself has suffered once for all, and that His body is the only offering worthy to be presented for the cleansing of sin. Heb. 10: 10–14.

With this offering at hand, we may have boldness to follow Him even into the “holiest of all,” where His blood is being offered in behalf of repentant sinners, to their eternal cleansing. Verse 19. It is therefore well to heed the exhortation of the apostle to draw near with a true heart, in full assurance of faith, having the heart sprinkled, and so cleansed from an evil conscience. The promise has been made that our great High Priest, tho infinitely exalted, will not be unmindful of our needs, because His ear is ever open to our cries. 1 Peter 3: 12; James 1: 5.

He who has thus spoken is faithful, and will not turn away from any who come unto Him for help. John 6: 37. We may therefore, in confidence, hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering. Heb. 10: 23. He who in symbols so minutely pointed out beforehand the mysteries of His atonement work, laid His plans deep and sure. The only thing now needed to make His sacrifice available for us, is for us to believe in Him, and His life is ours. John 3: 36.

Did Christ really come and die our sacrifice, as foreshadowed in the Hebrew types? Sacred history affirms this, and even more. It assures us that tho He was cruelly put to death, the power of God raised Him from the dead. To be assured of this last, is to inspire confidence in His ability to save from the common doom of humanity. Rom. 1: 3, 4. But it is affirmed that more than five hundred of His former brethren saw Him after His resurrection, and this is indeed convincing. 1 Cor. 15: 5–7. Believing this, why may we not be assured that God will also bring us, with Him, out of the same condition, to life everlasting? Every truly converted Christian has a living experience that gives him this positive assurance. 1 Thess. 4: 13, 14. Truly ours is a faith of which we should be glad, and for which we should be willing to exchange all the allurements of the world. J. O. CORLISS.

Sin Conquered by Love

By G. W. Reaser

THE END OF SIN’S DOMINION.—NO. 5.

Sin Conquered by Love.

“Canst thou believe my song when thus I sing? When man had fallen, was ruined, hopeless, lost,— Messiah, Prince of Peace, Eternal King, Died, that the dead might live, the lost be saved! Wonder, O heavens! and be astonished, earth! Ye choral harps! ye angels that excel In strength! and loudest, ye redeemed of men! To God and to the Lamb, sing honor, sing Dominion, glory; blessing sing, and praise. O love divine! O mercy infinite! The Lord of life for guilty rebels bleeds,— Quenches eternal fire with blood divine. Saviour of men, henceforth be Thou my theme; Redeeming love my study day and night.”

“GOD is love.” His character is the very essence of love. His government is founded upon principles of unchanging love. He dwells in an atmosphere of love. His love pervades all space, and is bestowed in constant, flowing streams upon the children of men, the vast majority of whom have no appreciation of it.

Infinite love is the all-conquering force in the universe, and must finally prevail against all opposition.

When God’s love was questioned, accused, by Satan, it must of necessity be proved,—demonstrated beyond all possible question,—so that all beings surviving the ravages of the reign of sin will have hearts and minds responsive to its benign influence, and that recognize its Author as having their supreme happiness at heart in all His dealings with them. Such only can worship Him as the Supreme Ruler of the universe.

“Love can not be commanded; it can not be won by force or authority. Only by love is love awakened. To know God is to love Him. Only He who knew the height and depth of the love of God, could make it known.” The incarnation of the Son of God, the cross of Calvary, with its associations and its far-reaching results, is the greatest proof that the universe could furnish of the unfailing and self-sacrificing love of the eternal God.

The strongest evidence of love is manifested in premeditatedly laying down one’s life for another. “Before the foundations of the earth were laid, the Father and the Son had united in a covenant to redeem man, if he should be overcome by Satan. They had clasped their hands in a solemn pledge that Christ should become the surety for the human race.” “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Had it not been for infinite love, the Father would have spared His Son, and left sinners to merited destruction, to certain doom. But all the glories of heaven could not detain the Gift of God’s love, nor could the Saviour of men enjoy the bliss of heaven, while our race was imperiled. He beheld our helpless and hopeless condition; “from heaven did the Lord behold the earth; to hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death; to declare the name of the Lord in Zion, and His praise in Jerusalem; when the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the Lord.” And thus will redemption be the science and the song of all eternity; for the gathering of the people here mentioned is doubtless the same as that brought into the field of prophecy by Daniel, when he states that “the kingdom, and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High.”

To give full proof of unfailing love demanded one all-sufficient Example of self-sacrifice. Infinite wisdom and mercy provided it. The Gift will finally be accepted as complete, as witnessed by the prophet, when, with time-annihilating, telescopic vision he exclaimed: “I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain. . . . And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever and ever.” “And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye His servants, and ye that fear Him, both small and great;” and then, hearing the arches of heaven ring with the loud-swelling chorus of the redeemed, he adds, “I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia; for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth; let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to Him.” The “times” when Christ will make manifest the love of God, will have fully come, and He will have shown, “who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords,” and thus “thru Christ’s redeeming work the government of God stands justified. The omnipotent One is made known as the God of love. Satan’s charges are refuted. Rebellion can never again rise. Sin can never again enter the universe. Thru eternal ages, all are secure from apostasy. By love’s self-sacrifice, the inhabitants of earth and heaven are bound to their Creator in bonds of indissoluble union.”

Thus “the great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats thruout the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, thruout the illimitable realms of space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that God is love,” and all will have such a horror of sin, when its nature is so fully made apparent, that every voice and heart will accord in the acclamation,—

“O cursed, cursed sin; traitor to God, And ruiner of man; mother of woe, And death, and hell.”

G. W. REASER.

“AS A FOOL DIETH.”

By G. B. Thompson

Reader, you may be dead to-morrow; yes, to-day’s sun may not sink from sight ere your race is run, and you are dead. You have not ascertained that you will not so depart. And if you do, will it be “as a fool dieth”?

To fall asleep “in Him” is pronounced “blessed.” “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.” Rev. 14:13. But how sad, beyond the power of mortal tongue to express, is it to die “as a fool dieth,” “without God in the world.” A dead, Christless sinner is a terrible object to behold! To be wrapped in a Christless shroud, sleep in a Christless tomb, sleep a Christless sleep, O my soul, how sad! The death and funeral of such a person may be truthfully said to be among the saddest things on earth.

He will awake; but while he lived he cast the die, fixed by his own voluntary choice his doom, and now it is given him—“weeping and gnashing of teeth,” thrust out, yet seeing “Abraham, Isaac, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God.” He “shall come forth,” but to “the resurrection of damnation,” to “shame and everlasting contempt.” The Son of God endured the cold, forbidding portals of the tomb that man might be a victor over it, and offered to guide him to the land of life; but the offer was rejected, the proffered hand was spurned, and he went down in gloom; beyond lies darkness, eternal night, oblivion.

By and by the Life-giver will appear on yonder cloud with His trumpet, speaking life to His children locked beneath the cerement of the grave, and they will come forth changed to a glorious immortality and caught up to meet Him in the air; but the Christless sinner will not be there. There awaits no welcome for him in that glorious day. The redemption song will be chanted, but not by him. The ten thousand times ten thousand of angels will sing, “Glory to God in the highest,” but he hears it not. Jesus, with the tread of a conqueror, and leading a great multitude which no man can number, will approach the pearly gates of the Eternal City, exclaiming, “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of Glory shall come in,” and angels will open wide the celestial gates and the weary pilgrims will enter in; but he will not be there. On the lips of the ransomed multitude will be an eternal song; but he will not be there to join this heavenly chorus. Angels will bring lovely crowns, and, with His own hand, our Redeemer will place them on the head of the saints; but he will not be there to receive one. He chose the muck-rake and disregarded the crown. Born to be a king and to glorify his Redeemer, he exchanged his birthright for a mess of pottage. The fadeless flowers of the beautiful new earth will bloom eternally, and the dome of heaven ring with the voice of gladness and joy; but not for him. Instead of listening to the hymns of seraphim, he hears the unchangeable decree, “Depart.”

To live without Christ is to die without Him. O what a sad moment when the taper of such a soul is extinguished; when the brittle thread of life has been severed; when the span of life has gone out like a spark from a smelter’s anvil! To behold in the casket the face of a poor human being, who lived and walked the earth by your side, buffeted with the enemy of righteousness, and cut down at last by the grim reaper, and to know that, if that face is ever seen again, it will

be on the “left hand,” among those who might better never have been born, is a sad thought. As I pen these lines, my soul is stirred as never before to reach and save poor perishing souls from the abyss of ruin before mercy shall cease to be offered, and the irrevocable fiat shall go forth, fixing the destiny of the race. The needs of humanity all around us should energize us to labor as the Master labored. Our own needs should cause us to bestir ourselves, lest we be found at last among those who are “weighed in the balance and found wanting.”

Reader, do you know God to-day? If not, there is need of haste; for we have reached a time in the plan of the mysterious problem of salvation when God announces that there shall be “delay no longer.” Rev. 10:6 (Rotherham’s Trans.). To-day is the day of salvation. Now is the accepted time. You may not see the noon-day sun sink to rest; you may not behold it arise. The present moment is the opportunity of your life. That moment lost, all may be lost, and the combined wealth of all the Napoleons of finance can not buy back the neglected opportunity. To-day you are living, and Jesus Christ is your friend. He freely offers His life an atonement for yours. For you He endured the cross, despising the shame. Now the Spirit is saying, “Come.” Your Elder Brother stands with arms extended wide, longing to enfold the vilest of the race, and make them pure. The marriage supper is ready. You have been bidden, and the Bridegroom is tarrying. He awaits your decision. Will you accept His gracious invitation, or reject it and die “as a fool dieth”? 2 Sam. 3:33.

CHRIST'S PRAYER FOR US.

By Ellen G. White

“THIS is life eternal, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent.”

These words are of the greatest importance to us. Professing Christians should manifest a deep, earnest, anxiety to be like the Redeemer in character. They should dwell upon Christ's life. Then they will be changed into His likeness. Let each examine himself critically, to see whether in the home, in the church, and in the world he is revealing the Christlikeness, so that the Saviour may say, “I am glorified in him.”

“I pray not that Thou shouldst take them out of the world,” Christ continued, “but that thou shouldst keep them from the evil.” Christians should exercise every ability which God has given them in an effort to answer this prayer. They are to ask God earnestly and frequently to keep them from the evil that is in the world. Christ has charged His followers to pray without ceasing. Never fail to importune God in private prayer. Never cease to intercede with him; for when you fail to pray, you are strengthless to resist Satan's temptations.

Our sanctification is the work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is the fulfilment of the covenant that God has made with those who bind themselves up with Him, to stand with Him, with His Son, and with His Spirit in holy fellowship. Have you been born again? Have you become a new being in Christ Jesus? Then co-operate with the three great powers of heaven who are working in your behalf. Doing this you will reveal to the world the principles of righteousness.

As we strive to represent Christ to the world, we must exercise faith in Him. He says, “According to your faith be it unto you.” It was by faith that Enoch walked with God. Do not ask others to exercise faith for you. You are yourself to obtain a daily experience in the things of God. You are yourself to realize the truth of the words, “All things are possible to him that believeth.”

When you accept Christ, you are in one sense cut away from the world. You are dead to its ambitions, dead to its greed for advantage over your brethren and neighbors. God says, “Come out from among them, and be ye separate, . . . and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” This is the pledge of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, made to you if you will keep your baptismal vow, and touch not the unclean thing. You are to turn aside from all that would prevent the pure, sacred principles of truth. You are to enter into no intrigue. Sharp practise with believers or unbelievers, is an offense in God's sight. It is a sin which places those who commit it in connection with the author of all sin.

Those who come out from the world in spirit and in all practise may regard themselves as sons and daughters of God. They may believe His word as a child believes every word of his parents. Every promise is sure to him that believes. Those who unite with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who show by their lives that they are no longer following the course they followed before they united with these divine instrumentalities, will receive wisdom from above. They will not depend upon human wisdom. In order to deal righteously with the world, as members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King, Christians must feel their need of a power which comes only from the heavenly agencies that have pledged themselves to work in man's behalf.

After we have formed a union with the great threefold power, we shall regard our duty toward the members of God's family with a sacred awe. We shall seek to answer the prayer, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” by living pure, sanctified lives, showing the world how the will of God is done in heaven.

“Enoch walked with God; and he was not; for God took him.” And when God takes the members of His church to heaven, it will be because they have walked with Him here on this earth, receiving from above strength and wisdom which enables them to serve Him aright. Those who are taken to God will be men and women who now pray in humility and contrition, whose hearts are not lifted up unto vanity. In their dealing with their fellow-men they represent Christ. Those who dishonor God while professing to serve Him, are one with the world. In the last great day they will be found among the number who knew their Lord's will, but did it not.

God calls upon those who have united with Him, who have pledged themselves to die to the world and live unto Christ, properly to represent their profession of faith. If they are partakers of the divine nature, the principles of sacred brotherhood will be sacredly cherished by them. To all they will manifest tenderness, sympathy, and compassion. They will reveal Christ's longing to receive the members of His family; and to feed their hungry souls with the bread of life.

“Sanctify them thru Thy truth; Thy word is truth. As Thou hast sent Me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also might be sanctified thru the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me thru their word; that they all may be one, as Thou, Father, art in Me and I in Thee, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.” These words present the grand result of Christian unity. Christians are to be one in Christ. By their unity they are to bear witness to the world that Christ is the Sent of God. All true disciples will realize that this is the standard they must reach. They will strive continually to help one another.

“I pray for them; I pray not for the world, but for them which Thou hast given Me.” They are on My side. They stand under My banner. By receiving Me as their personal Saviour, they have pledged themselves to keep My holy law, to reveal Me in all their transactions in the church and in the world. I have purchased them by My manifestation of love and power in their behalf. For them I have sanctified Myself to the work Thou hast appointed Me, that they also may be sanctified to the work Thou hast appointed them, that by their union with Me and with one another they may reveal to the world that Thou didst send Me to the earth to save sinners.

“And the glory which Thou gavest Me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one; I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved Me.” The world needs to see a current representation of the principles of the Gospel. As Christians it is our duty to show the uplifting, sanctifying power of the truth. We have a great work to do, and O, we need so much to close the windows of the soul earthward, and open them heavenward. God will keep the current of His grace flowing into the hearts of those who are willing to be channels of light.
