Heathen Plots against Nehemiah
Earlier text: SECULAR

BIBLE SANCTIFICATION:

A CONTRAST OF

TRUE AND FALSE THEORIES.

By Mrs. E. G. White.
This is a pamphlet of only 84 pages, but its value is not to be judged by its size. It is just what its title indicates: a faithful presentation of Bible truth on this important subject, and an exposure of the false theories prevailing in regard to it. Every believer in Bible truth should read it. Buy it, read it, and lend it to your neighbor. Price, 10 cents.

NOTICE.—We send no papers from this Office without pay in advance, unless by special arrangement. When persons receive copies without ordering them they are sent by other parties, and we can give no information in regard to them. Persons thus receiving them are not indebted to the Office.
Money orders, drafts, etc., should be made to "Pacific Press," NEVER to individuals, as they may be absent, and business thereby be delayed.

Credits to Articles

THE "credits" to articles in the SIGNS will be marked as heretofore. In the editorial columns, articles by the editor will bear no signature; those by the assistant and corresponding editors will have their initials, "E. J. W." and "U. S." In other parts of the paper, original articles, and all articles by our own correspondents, will be signed in SMALL CAPITALS; selections will be credited in italics. In every case where the author is known, we intend to give credit to the writer, or the paper from which it is taken; where the author is unknown we can only say "selected."

New Hope for the Coming Year

SOME departments of the paper have necessarily suffered by taking our "assistant" to work in the College in Healdsburg. We are pleased to be able to say that the coming of others from the East will enable us to do better by these parts of our work than we had even hoped to do, until he was released elsewhere. We engage in our work for the coming year with new hope and courage.

Useless Controversy.

SOME time since we copied an article from an Eastern paper on the subject of the two houses of Israel. The article was in nowise controversial—it referred to no individual. We then received a letter from a minister in an Eastern State, saying that he had been requested to reply to it, and forwarding a long article in reply. No one had any authority to request a reply to an article in this paper, unless he furnished his own means of publishing it. We thought at first, however, that we would waive our objection to the unwarranted liberty taken by somebody, and publish the article, first submitting it to the author of the selection to which it referred. And then the author of the aforesaid reply asked for room to reply further to any remark which the first writer might make as a rejoinder. This was asking so very much that we have decided to reject the matter altogether. In this we do no injustice to any one, for no one was referred to in the selected article; we invited no reply to it; and we have had no intention, and have none now, of opening our columns to useless controversies.
We are necessarily an aggressive people, having unpopular truth to proclaim, and popular error to oppose. But we are not fond of controversy at any time, on any subject. We have regretted that we had to repel direct assaults made by those who seem to think that "Adventism" is something to be abhorred, and that may be put down. Our position is now so well understood that we do not think that we can be injured on the Pacific Coast by misrepresentations: we shall, therefore, "pursue the even tenor of our way," with little regard for those who may oppose our work in an unreasonable manner.

Notes on Ingersoll.

WE do not so highly value books on the "Evidences of Christianity," and replies to infidelity, as some do. The Saviour said that they who would not believe Moses and the prophets would not believe though one rose from the dead. So we think. The truths of the Bible are their own best evidence. One series of sermons on "the law and the prophets" are worth more than a whole library of human reasonings to prove the truthfulness of the Scriptures. If Ingersoll must be answered, the best thing we have yet seen is a pamphlet of 200 pages, entitled "Notes on Ingersoll," by Rev. L. A. Lambert, Catholic, of Buffalo. It is very brief, but pointed, and generally effective.
