Stirring Messages

In Tract Form

Who Changed the Sabbath?

Is a secret to many, but the mystery is clearly revealed in this tract. Startling facts are brought to light regarding this great question that will interest and profit all.

Price 1½ cents each, or $1.00 per hundred.

The Day of the Sabbath

Is it any day? or is it a particular day? and, if a particular day, what day is it? We find in this tract eighty-two propositions set forth for the thoughtful and candid to ponder.

Price 1 cent each, or 70 cents per hundred.

Elihu on the Sabbath

A general review of the Sabbath question, and one that has proved very satisfactory, from the fact that several million copies have been circulated. The demand has been so great that a new edition of 15,000 copies has been printed.

Price 1 cent each, or 70 cents per hundred.

Babylon Is Fallen!

A startling statement, indeed, and one which requires an explanation. The statement is made in Revelation 14:8, and the explanation is found in this tract. It tells what Babylon is, what her fall means, and how it concerns us.

Price 1½ cents each, or $1.00 per hundred.

The Seven Last Plagues

This is another very timely and thrilling tract on a subject that concerns every one now living. The writer briefly portrays the events leading up to the time when the plagues are poured out, showing who are to suffer this dreadful scourge of God's wrath, and then gives an exposition of each plague, with the effect it will have on the earth and man.

Price 3 cents each; per hundred, $2.15.

The Millennium

What is it? Where is it? And when is it? are questions that are agitating, as well as confusing, many minds. This tract clears up the obscurities by defining the term, and producing Bible information as to where it will take place, and when.

Price 1½ cents each, or $1.00 per hundred.

The Eastern Question

In this tract we find the solution of the great problem which centers in the “Sick Man of the East”—Turkey. It touches briefly the prophecies concerning the rise of this power, and portrays its final end; also the world's crisis as connected with this ominous event.

Price 1 cent, or 70 cents per hundred.

Heralds of His Coming

Is it a literal coming? Is the end really near? May we know the time? These are a few of the questions answered in this tract. Some of the special signs of Christ's second coming are pointed out, emphasized by an original chart, portraying in a vivid manner the points dwelt upon.

Price 1½ cents each, or $1.00 per hundred.

The Great Threefold Message

The Gospel of saving grace has been ever the same in all ages, but special messages of warning have also been given as telling factors in the saving work. Noah gave a message in his day, and John the Baptist another. The writer shows in this tract that a great Threefold Message is to be given to the world in our day, warning them of the dreadful calamities coming, and pointing out the way of escape.

Price 1 cent each, or 70 cents per hundred.

Signs of Our Times

Every thoughtful mind must be alarmed at the outlook in the world to-day, among the nations, in society, in the church, but how few have an intelligent understanding of what these things mean, as well as the disturbances in nature. Not only does this tract point out the signs and show their import, but gives a message of hope and comfort to God's people.

Price 1 cent each, or 70 cents per hundred.

Marshaling of the Nations

Have you noted the movements of the great nations of to-day and been impressed that these movements must sooner or later affect the whole world? Have you divined that the grasping after territory must finally culminate in the last great battle, where, the Scriptures tell us, “the kings of the earth and of the whole world” are gathered? This pamphlet treats the subject in a way that will leave no room for conjecture. You should read it and circulate it everywhere at this opportune time. 44 pages. Price 10 cents.

Modern Mysteries

A stirring pamphlet of 100 pages, treating the following subjects: Hypnotism, Clairvoyance, Telepathy, Theosophy, New Thought, Pantheism, etc. The writer lifts the veil that seems to hide the diabolical workings and true moral aspect of these isms and cults, and we behold in the light of day things that will astonish and startle the reader.

Price 15 cents each.

Notes on Publishing, Books, and Prophecy

Thursday, July 7, there was completed at Mountain View the organization of the Pacific Press Publishing Association, a membership corporation. Particulars will be given in our next.

The writer of “First-Day Observance,” on page 6, of last issue, is the author of a most interesting and instructive book, entitled, “Practical Lessons from the Experiences of Israel.” The Talmudic writings, the Jewish feasts and fasts, temple and offerings, customs, traditions, and laws, are all illuminated by Mr. Gilbert’s book. The Bible will be much plainer to the ordinary reader after reading “Practical Lessons,” and profound students will find it helpful and suggestive. It contains 400 pages, illustrated. Its price is from $1.00 to $2.00, according to binding. The cheapest is substantial cloth.

Ian Maclaren (Dr. John Watson) is quoted as saying that “there are only two provinces of absolutely sure knowledge; one is pure mathematics, and the other is the experience of the soul.” But what about the “more sure word of prophecy”? 2 Peter 1:19; Isa. 8:20. What about the Word of God, through which we are to be sanctified, because it is the truth? John 17:17. What about the law of God, which inspiration says is the truth? Ps. 119:142. What else can give us a “sure knowledge” of sin? Rom. 3:20; 7:7. How long would it take a sinner to find out the righteousness of God through “pure mathematics” or the “experience of his soul.” The power of God unto salvation is made known only through the Gospel of Christ. Rom. 1:15–17. Man shall live by every word of God (Matt. 4:4), and not by the experience of his soul, or by mathematics. In Christ “are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge,” and “all riches of the full assurance of understanding” (Col. 2:1–3), and we get this wisdom in His Word (ch. 3:16).

“Not of Us.”

By Editor

A correspondent sends us a clipping from the Cleveland (Ohio) Press concerning a president of a free-love society, who states that he once belonged to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, was a preacher in fact among them; and we are asked, “What about it?”—Not much of anything. We do not recall the name of such a man as preacher, yet he may have been. We do think, however, that any religious denomination is to be congratulated who has no place for those who hold to such things, and who must go outside in order to practise them. It is a credit to the people that such ones should leave them. As the apostle wrote; it has ever been true: “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they all are not of us.” The commandments of God and the faith of Jesus furnishes poor pasture-land for free love.

Increase of Catholicism.

In a recent address by Mr. Charles J. Bonaparte, printed in the Catholic Mirror, of July 2, he gives the following figures as indicative of the growth of the Roman Catholic Church in America. In 1789 the American hierarchy was established by bull of Pope Pius VI. The Catholic population was then estimated at 40,000—one hundredth part of all the population of the United States. A century later there were over 8,000,000 Roman Catholics, more than one eighth of all the population; and in the last fifteen years the increase has been more rapid still. “While the number of American citizens has increased perhaps twenty-fold, the number of American Catholics has increased much more than 300-fold.” What a tremendous influence is this in politics.

Religious Uncertainty.—

Professor Scott, of the Congregational Theological Seminary, Chicago, declares that the religious uncertainty makes it “now very difficult in America to find men qualified to become professors in theology.” The Presbyterian (Philadelphia) says: “Doctrine is not prized, nor understood as in the days of our fathers. Doubt and uncertainty abound. Loose thinking is dominant. All sorts of opinions prevail in and out of the church. A hearing is given to all kinds of issues. Indifference to what men believe obtains.” All this is another result of building on the sands of higher criticisms amid the fogs of evolution. When men depart from God’s Word, what is there that is certain?

The Bible Its Own Best Defender

The Bible does not need our defense. It is its own best defender, and the best defender of every soul which trusts in words of life. “By the word of Thy lips,” says one of old, “I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.” When Jesus was mightily assailed by the enemy, in every instance He met the assaults of the prince of darkness by the word. “It is written” was sufficient. “Thy word have I hidden in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee,” declares, the author of the one hundred and nineteenth psalm, Daniel perhaps. There is keeping power in God’s word to him who admits it into his heart. Why not hide in its impregnable fortress?

Religion Taught by State Schools.

In the Contemporary Review (London) for May, Mr. H. V. Weisse discusses the religion of the English school boy, and concludes that it is of very little account in practical, ordinary life; that it is a practical failure “to produce moral strength in boys.” And so all perfunctory, routine teaching will ever be. If religion is to be taught in schools, it must first be in the teacher a vitalizing current, affecting all with whom it comes in contact.

Tuberculosis in Street Dust.

Authorities in New York City tell us “that five years work as a street sweeper in New York make the average individual a consumptive.” We are further told that there would not be so much danger if the streets were sprinkled before sweeping, as are the streets of the cities of Europe. This is a hint to householders, especially where there are careless consumptives who eject the germ-laden sputum on the floor or in the yard.

South Lancaster Academy Announcement

The Twenty-third Announcement of the South Lancaster (Mass.) Academy has come to our table, together with a neat calendar, beginning with June, the commencement of the school year. The calendar is embellished with half-tones of South Lancaster and surroundings. The announcement contains a history and description of the academy, its purposes, courses of study, regulations, terms, etc. It is an up-to-date announcement of a Christian industrial school. It presents courses in the following: Biblical-Academic, Normal, Preparatory-Medical, Nurses' Preparatory, Music, and Commercial. For further information address the principal, Prof. Frederick Griggs, So. Lancaster, Mass.

True No Longer.

It used to be said a few years ago that ordinary life was too humdrum and needed the tragedy and pathos of the stage as a counterpoise. But that can be said no longer. As a New York paper expresses it: “In their most splendidly-awful scenes John Webster and John Ford never mirrored the play of human passions with more vivid intensity than have the newspapers of the last week. It is in the daily papers rather than in fiction that real tragedy and real humor are to be found to-day, for the imaginings of the novelist and the dramatist have become milk and water—or mere mud—while human nature is the same as it has ever been.” And this was printed a week before the awful, horrible tragedy of the excursion steamer, the General Slocum.

An Example for Christians.

—When a Japanese goes to the war, his family erect a red slab at the gate and inscribe upon it, “Gone to the front.” If he dies or is brought home dead, a black slab takes its place, which contains the inscription, “Bravery forever.” John Fox, Jr., tells us in Scribner’s that there is no weeping or mourning among his relatives, but rejoicings. Even so there ought to be among Christians. And yet how often we see the reverse of this if a child or a friend leaves home for a place in Christ’s cause out in the regions beyond. It ought to be the greatest cause of rejoicing that a mother could give her sons to Christ’s cause. How often devotion and zeal in an earthly cause eclipse devotion and zeal in the eternally-glorious cause of Christ!

Consecration

Consecration.—Repentance, or putting away of sin belongs to the sinner; but consecration belongs to the child of God. If we believe that we are redeemed by the blood of Christ, faith acknowledges that redemption. We know that we are not our own, that we are bought with a price (1 Cor. 6:20); and therefore it is our duty to yield to Him for His service all our ransomed powers. Read Rom. 12:1.

2. This is consecration. We are His to live or to die; to be offered as the ox upon the altar of sacrifice; or, like the ox, to place our neck to the yoke and do faithful, willing, patient service for God.

The Fatherhood of God.

In a new book by Rev. A. Lincoln Shute, on “The Fatherhood of God,” the author sums up the whole truth in a nutshell when he says: “The Scriptures ground the divine family relationship not in creation, but in redemption.” “In the divine family this sonship is by grace and not by nature, not from Adam, but from Christ, not based on creation, but grounded in redemption.” And he rightly characterizes the universal Fatherhood theory as “a most cruel and deceptive doctrine.”

The More Hopeless.

None are so blind as those who will not see; none so hard of hearing as those who stop their ears against instruction; none so hard-hearted, vile criminal tho he may be, as those who determinedly resist the truth. The sneering Pharisee at the foot of the cross who prided himself on his righteous life, was harder of heart than the penitent thief who was suffering justly for his crimes. Let the heart and life be opened toward God, and His truth will ever be light and beauty.

A Globular Life-Boat

A globular life-boat, invented by Captain David of Norway, has been tested in very stormy weather in which experts said that ordinary life-boats would have succumbed, and has proved a complete success. It has many advantages.
