The king of the north, in the final verses of Daniel 11 refers to the Turkish Power. This power, with its central seat at Constantinople, directly occupies the historical territory of the original "king of the north" following the division of Alexander the Great's empire.
To understand this more fully, let us explore the prophetic journey:
Understanding the Kings of the North and South 🗺️
In the prophecy of Daniel, specifically in chapters 7, 8, and 11, the course of earthly kingdoms from Daniel's time until the end of the world is outlined. These prophecies are intricately connected, with later visions expanding upon earlier ones. Daniel 11 provides a detailed account of the conflicts between the "king of the north" and the "king of the south."
When Alexander's empire was divided, his dominion was split into four main parts, corresponding to the "four winds of heaven." These divisions were reckoned from the perspective of Palestine. The territory to the north became the "kingdom of the north," and the territory to the south became the "kingdom of the south." The regions corresponding to the king of the north originally included Thrace, Asia Minor, and the countries around the Hellespont and Bosphorus, which is the territory that Turkey now occupies. The king of the south was primarily associated with Egypt.
Throughout history, even as geographical boundaries changed and old empires gave way to new ones, the powers occupying these specific territories retained the designations of "king of the north" or "king of the south."
The Turkish Power at the Time of the End 🕰️
As the prophecy progresses to "the time of the end," the "king of the north" continues to represent the power controlling the territory of Constantinople. History clearly shows that since 1453 A.D., this territory has been held and governed by the Turks. Therefore, in the context of Daniel 11:40-45 the "king of the north" is the Turkish dominion.
The events described in Daniel 11:40-45 relate to this Turkish power. For instance, it is said that "tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him." This was notably fulfilled in the Crimean War when Russia, from the north and east, waged war against the Ottoman Empire. The Turkish power was only preserved through the assistance of Great Britain and other allies.
The prophecy culminates with the declaration that this power "shall come to his end, and none shall help him." Daniel 11:45. This event is closely linked to significant end-time events.
Christ, the King of Kings, and the End of All Kingdoms 👑
It is important to remember that the grand culmination of these prophecies is the establishment of God's eternal kingdom. When the "king of the north" comes to its end, it signals "a time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation." Daniel 12:1. This is also the time when Michael (Christ) stands up, indicating the commencement of His reign and the close of human probation. Daniel 12:1.
At the second coming of Christ, He will reign as "King of kings, and Lord of lords." Revelation 19:16. The kingdoms of this world will become the kingdoms of our Lord, and all earthly empires and nations will be consumed as God's kingdom is set up, a kingdom that "shall never be destroyed." Daniel 2:44.
The Lord is calling us to be loyal to the God of heaven in this time of crisis, like moral heroes such as Daniel, Joseph, and Elijah.. We are to be found obedient children, walking in truth, and placing ourselves on the side of the Prince of Life, under the banner of Prince Emmanuel.. The time is short, and terrible scenes are before us; what we do, we must do quickly.. The entire universe is watching these closing scenes of the great controversy with inexpressible interest..
It is our privilege to prepare for the coming of the King of kings by maintaining a calm repose in God and seeking to serve Him wholeheartedly..
