Divine Sovereignty and the Limits of Civil Authority
Where does a government's authority end and God's sovereignty begin?
Are all authorities from God?
AdventAI
While civil government is a divinely appointed institution, a clear line exists between civil authority and an individual's relationship with God. All power and dominion originally belonged to God, who created man in His own image and gave him dominion over the earth. This original government was self-government under God, but through sin, man chose to abandon this and fell under the power of Satan, the author of anarchy. Although God allows earthly rulers to exist, their authority is limited to civil matters and does not extend to the realm of conscience or religion.
The Limits of Civil Authority
Civil governments are entitled to what is civil, but they have no right to interfere with what is moral or religious. Jesus Christ clearly defined this separation when He commanded to render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s Matthew 22:21.
Civil Duties: We owe the government obedience in civil matters, such as paying tribute.
Religious Duties: Our relationship with God is a separate realm where civil laws have no jurisdiction.
Higher Allegiance: When human laws conflict with God’s commands, the Christian must obey God rather than men Acts 5:29.
The Origin of Monarchy and Usurpation
Earthly monarchy and the assertion of man’s dominion over others arose from apostasy and the rejection of God's self-government.
Rejection of God: As people disregarded the knowledge of God, confusion and lawlessness prevailed, leading the strongest to assert dominion over others.
Satan’s Usurped Rule: By overcoming man in Eden, Satan became the "god of this world," taking the limited power originally given to Adam 2 Corinthians 4:4.
Divine Boundaries: God has always entered a protest against the establishment of absolute human kingship, as seen in His protest against kingship in Israel.
God's Ultimate Sovereignty
Even while earthly powers exist, God remains the supreme Governor who sets boundaries that rulers must not cross.
God Over Rulers: The hearts of kings are in the hand of the Lord, and He turns them according to His will Proverbs 21:1.
Protest Against Tyranny: Throughout history, God has manifested Himself in protest against every empire that sought to dominate the world and intercept the worship due to Him alone.
Restoration of Dominion: Christ, the second Adam, will eventually recover the dominion lost by the first Adam and restore the earth to its original purpose Micah 4:8.
The Final Kingdom: All earthly kingdoms will ultimately be succeeded by the everlasting kingdom of God, where his dominion will endure throughout all generations Psalms 145:13.
