God in the Light and the Thick Darkness
How can God dwell in thick darkness if He is also pure light?
1 Kings 8:12 and 2 Chronicles 6:1 tell us that God dwells in the thick darkness. In 1 John 1:5 is says that God is light. Psalm 139:12 says that the darkness and the light are both alike to God.

The apparent tension between God dwelling in darkness and being the source of pure light is one of the most beautiful mysteries of His divine nature. To understand how He can be both, we must look at how Scripture describes His holiness, His protection of humanity, and His absolute sovereignty over all creation.
The Mystery of the Divine Presence
When Solomon dedicated the temple, he acknowledged a profound reality: God chooses to veil His overwhelming glory to accommodate our human limitations.
"Then spake Solomon, The Lord said that he would dwell in the thick darkness." - 1 Kings 8:12 (See also 2 Chronicles 6:1
This thick darkness is not the absence of good, but rather a "sacred concealment." Because God is so holy and His presence so powerful, no fallen human could survive looking upon His full, unshielded majesty. Just as a cloud covered Mount Sinai when He spoke to Moses, the darkness serves as a merciful veil. It reminds us that while God is near, His ways and His being are far above our full comprehension.
"Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne." - Psalm 97:2
The Essence of God’s Character
While the "darkness" describes how God sometimes manifests to human eyes, light describes who He is in His very essence.
"This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." - 1 John 1:5
In this context, light represents total purity, truth, and moral perfection. To say there is no darkness in Him means there is no sin, no deception, and no shadow of turning. When we walk with Him, we are stepping out of the spiritual ignorance of this world and into the clarity of His truth.
The Sovereignty of God Over All Environments
For us, darkness often represents a lack of knowledge or a place of danger. For the Creator, however, there are no such barriers.
"Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee." - Psalm 139:12
This verse provides the bridge between the two concepts. Light and darkness are created conditions that affect us, but they do not affect Him. God is just as present, just as active, and just as seeing when we are in our "darkest" hours of trial as He is in our moments of "light" and joy. He is the Master of both realms.
Personal Application 🙏
Trust in the Hidden Moments: If you feel like you are in a season of "thick darkness" where you cannot see God’s hand, remember 1 Kings 8:12. He is often most present in the very clouds that seem to hide Him. He is working in the mystery.
Walk in the Light: While we may not understand all of God's secret counsels, He has given us enough light in His Word to take the next step. As 1 John 1:5 suggests, let us strive for transparency and holiness, letting His light cleanse our hearts.
Rest in His Vision: Be encouraged by Psalm 139. Nothing is hidden from God’s sight. Your path is never obscured to Him. You can trust His guidance because His "night vision" is just as clear as His "day vision."
By beholding Christ, who is the "light of the knowledge of the glory of God" 2 Corinthians 4:6, we see the Father clearly. We see a God who is powerful enough to dwell in unapproachable light, yet loving enough to meet us in our darkest valleys. 📖✨
