It is wonderful to explore the depth of God's commands regarding love in these verses. The core message that emerges is a profound and evolving call to love, with Jesus raising the standard to a divine level.

The Command to Love Our Neighbor

  • ** Leviticus 19:18**: This verse lays the foundational command in the Old Testament: "You shall not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD." This divine injunction is a fundamental principle within God's moral law, forming part of the second table of the Ten Commandments, which outlines our duty to our fellow human beings. This principle demands impartial love to our fellow-man and is a practical regard for the rights of all beings according to their real and relative value. Jesus Himself affirmed that this command, along with loving God supremely, forms the basis upon which all the law and the prophets hang Matthew 22:39-40. This law of love is the foundation of God's government and the only service acceptable to Heaven.

The New Commandment: Love One Another as Christ Loved Us

  • ** John 13:34**: Here, Jesus introduces what He calls "A new commandment I give to you, That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another." This command transcends the traditional understanding of loving one's neighbor as oneself, elevating the standard to the self-sacrificing love Christ demonstrated. The "newness" lies in the unparalleled measure of love—the way Christ Himself loved His disciples. This supreme love for God, manifested through love for one another, is the one great principle that keeps humanity together in unselfish fellowship. It is also referred to as "the law of Christ," fulfilled when we bear one another's burdens Galatians 6:2.

  • ** John 15:17**: Jesus reiterates this vital instruction, stating, "These things I command you, that you love one another." This underscores the importance and centrality of mutual love among His followers. It is a command for believers to love one another as Christ has loved them, a love that offers God's people supremacy and is a step heavenward.

  • ** 1 John 3:11**: This verse confirms the enduring nature of this command: "For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another." The message of loving one another is not a recent addition but a foundational truth, heard "from the beginning" 1 John 3:11. This emphasizes that while Jesus presented it as "new" in its depth and standard, the essence of love for one another has always been God's message for humanity, directly contrasting with the hatred exemplified by Cain 1 John 3:12.

Comparison of the Commands

The progression from Leviticus to John reveals a magnificent expansion of the law of love:

  1. Foundation in Love for Neighbor: Leviticus 19:18 establishes the baseline, requiring us to love our neighbor as ourselves Leviticus 19:18. This principle is deeply embedded in God's moral law, which is perfect and converts the soul Psalm 19:7.

  2. Elevation to Christ's Standard: Jesus, in John 13:34 and John 15:17 elevates this command by setting His own divine love as the benchmark. We are now called to love one another as Christ has loved us John 13:34. This is a higher standard, reflecting His infinite sacrifice and compassion.

  3. Everlasting Principle: 1 John 3:11 affirms that this command to love one another is an enduring "message... from the beginning" 1 John 3:11. This highlights that God's law of love is eternal and immutable, continuously revealed and magnified throughout history.

In essence, while "love your neighbor as yourself" is a vital part of the divine law and the whole duty of man Ecclesiastes 12:13 the "new commandment" to "love one another as I have loved you" raises the standard to perfect, unselfish, Christ-like love. This distinguishing love among believers is the ultimate evidence to the world that they are Christ's disciples John 13:35. It is through this loving service to others that the entire law of God is fulfilled Galatians 5:14.

comment on Joshua 23:6-8, 12,13 and Joshua strong position.

AdventAI

Joshua 23:6-8

6 Be you therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that you turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;

7 That you come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves to them:

8 But hold to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.

AdventAI

Joshua 23:12-13

12 Else if you do in any wise go back, and join to the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in to them, and they to you:

13 Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps to you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which the LORD your God has given you.

AdventAI

To maintain a strong and victorious position in the spiritual life, you must exercise unwavering courage to keep and do everything written in the law of Moses without turning aside to the right or to the left Joshua 23:6. This steadfast integrity requires a resolute fixedness of purpose and a continuous, lifelong struggle for holiness.

The Secret of Joshua’s Strength

Joshua's success and moral power were not derived from human wisdom, but from his constant adherence to the divine word.

  • Constant Meditation: The secret of Joshua's victory lay in meditating on the book of the law day and night, ensuring it never departed from his mouth Joshua 1:7-8.

  • Total Dependence: Joshua made God his guide and put entire confidence in Him, recognizing that no soul remains righteous longer than they are in vital relation to the source of all virtue.

  • Courageous Obedience: He was commanded to be very courageous, which meant strictly adhering to the "constitution" of the ten commandments and all the statutes and judgments given through Moses Joshua 23:6.

Avoiding Compromise and Alliances

The warning in Joshua 23:7-8 and Joshua 23:12-13 focuses on the danger of mingling with worldly influences and forming forbidden associations Joshua 23:7-8.

  • Separation from Sin: You must cleave unto the Lord your God and avoid even mentioning the names of false gods, for any union with the world proves a snare to the soul Joshua 23:7-8.

  • The Peril of Backsliding: If you go back and cleave to the "remnant of these nations," making marriages or entering into close fellowship with them, it will result in spiritual disaster Joshua 23:12.

  • Sure Consequences: Such compromises become snares and traps, eventually leading to being plucked from the good land God has provided Joshua 23:13.

  • Maintaining the Standard: There is to be no compromise in our work to meet the world’s standard, as God's commandment-keeping people are not to unite with worldly plans or wisdom.

The Spiritual Reality of the Law

Joshua recognized that obedience is the only safety and the condition for receiving great spiritual blessings.

  • Internalized Truth: The principles of God's law are to be interwoven with all our knowledge, as a true knowledge of the Word is the only true scientific education.

  • Spirit over Mechanics: True fidelity is not merely a mechanical arrangement or an outward form of works, but a wholehearted service fueled by the Spirit of God softening the heart.

  • A Hedge of Protection: Following these commandments provides a hedge that keeps the soul from entering evil paths.

By walking in the path of humble obedience and catching the inspiration of the "sure word of prophecy," you can stand as a moral hero who is not ashamed of being part of God's peculiar people.

this sound a bit like righteousness by how good we are at keeping the commandments can you say is this because it is the old testament

AdventAI

Righteousness is never earned by human efforts to keep the law, regardless of whether the setting is the Old or New Testament. The same standard of holiness and the same method for attaining it—the righteousness of God by faith—has been the only way of salvation in every age of the world's history.

The Source of True Righteousness

Righteousness is a free gift from God that cannot be manufactured by man’s best attempts at obedience.

  • A Gift of Grace: No law exists that can give life or righteousness to a sinner; instead, righteousness is provided through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  • Imputed and Imparted: When we believe, Christ’s perfect righteousness is imputed to cover our past unrighteousness, and His divine power starts at the beginning of our actions to make them what they ought to be.

  • The Error of Legalism: Trusting in a legal religion or one's own ability to conform to the law only produces Pharisees, not Christians.

  • Faith is the Root: Only through being one with Christ and having His divine nature within us can we actually keep the commandments.

Continuity Between the Testaments

The gospel preached to us today is the exact same gospel that was preached to Abraham and the ancient worthies.

  • The Example of Abraham: Abraham was counted righteous because he believed God's promise long before he performed the works of obedience that later fulfilled that faith James 2:21-23.

  • The Same Standard: The Old Testament instructed people to fear God and keep His commandments as their whole duty, which is the same expectation found in the New Testament Ecclesiastes 12:13.

  • The Same Heart Work: God promised in the Old Testament to give a new heart and put His Spirit within His people to cause them to walk in His statutes Ezekiel 36:26-27.

  • Witnessed by the Law: While the law cannot provide righteousness to a transgressor, it serves as a witness to the righteousness that comes by faith Romans 3:21.

The Purpose of the Law

The law remains a perfect rule of character, but its function is to point out sin and lead the soul to Christ, the only source of strength Romans 3:20.

  • Our Schoolmaster: The law reveals our inability to satisfy God's demands on our own, forcing us to fly to Jesus for deliverance Galatians 3:24.

  • Obedience Out of Love: We do not keep the commandments to become righteous, but because God has made us righteous through His grace.

  • The Motive Matters: Service rendered out of fear or mere conviction is a legal spirit that does not please God; true obedience is the fruit of love and gratitude.

The Final Generation

Keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus is the special hallmark of the remnant people at the end of time Revelation 14:12.

  • Hitting the Mark: Those who live to the end will be made sinless before Christ comes, having so much of His being in them that they "hit the mark" every time through His divine power.

  • A Living Testimony: This final generation demonstrates that it is possible to keep God's law through total dependence on Christ's imputed and imparted righteousness.

  • Victory Through Faith: This is not a human achievement but the victory of faith that overcomes the world 1 John 5:4.

how then do we set boundaries

AdventAI

To establish proper boundaries in the Christian life, you must maintain a clear and unmistakable line of demarcation between the church and the world. This separation is not merely a human arrangement but a divine design intended to make God's people a distinct, pure, and holy power that attracts the world's attention through its transformation of character.

The Divine Line of Demarcation

God has drawn a deep and clear line between the righteous and the unrighteous, and between those who obey His commandments and those who do not.

  • Distinct Character: Believers are to be a peculiar people, standing apart from the customs, fashions, and selfish practices of the world.

  • Unmistakable Difference: The servants of God and the servants of Satan must be as distinct as light is from darkness.

  • Refusing Compromise: You must not lower the standard to meet the world; instead, the line of demarcation must be made decidedly apparent.

  • Vital Connection: Your ability to maintain this boundary depends entirely on your vital connection with Jesus Christ.

Where Boundaries Should Not Be Set

While moral boundaries are essential, there are areas where you must not set limits that hinder God's work.

  • Mental Development: You should not restrict the education of the youth, as God has set no limit to the development of the mental powers when used for His honor.

  • The Holy Spirit: Human judgment and methods can no more set boundaries to the working of the Holy Spirit than man can tell the wind where to blow.

  • Missionary Effort: There should be no boundaries to limit the sphere of labor for the saving of souls; the church must ever meditate advance moves.

  • Progress in Truth: We must never set stakes or boundaries to our understanding of God's Word, as there is always more to be learned through humble study.

Jurisdictional and Civil Boundaries

God has established specific boundaries for human authorities and individual responsibilities.

  • Government Jurisdiction: God has set a limit to the jurisdiction of civil government; it may regulate relations between men but has no authority in matters of religion or the conscience.

  • Church and State: The word of Christ decidedly separates religion from earthly government, commanding that we render to Caesar only what is Caesar's and to God what is God's.

  • Individual Judgment: Leading men should not lord it over others or prescribe a line for them to follow blindly; every worker must have room to exercise their own judgment and discretion.

  • Ministerial Roles: Ministers are set apart for the word and should not be burdened with business matters or committees that belong to capable business men.

Practical Boundaries in Daily Life

Boundaries must be applied to your habits and relationships to protect your spiritual integrity.

  • The Sabbath: God has placed His merciful hand over the Sabbath, severing it by a boundary from all secular time to preserve it for communion and family rest.

  • Health and Appetite: Natural appetites must be kept within their appropriate limits; overstepping these bounds degrades both the body and the soul.

  • Moral Restraints: We must avoid the least approach to stepping over the boundaries from obedience to disobedience.

  • Social Propriety: Lawless affection is prevented only by maintaining the barriers God has erected for the marriage relation and propriety of conduct.

By keeping on God's side of the line and refusing to set even one foot on the enemy's side, you become a polished instrument in the hands of the Lord. This distinct separation is maintained only as your life is hid with Christ in God.

AdventAI

Jesus is the central and indispensable power in maintaining every boundary, for without His constant presence and grace, all human efforts at righteousness result only in a fatal deception of self-righteousness. While the call to be a sanctified, working people is clear, it is only through yoking up with Christ in unselfish service that any true work for others can be accomplished.

The Role of Christ in Maintaining Boundaries

Your efforts to stay on the side of right are entirely dependent on the One who is all-righteous and all-compassionate.

  • The Only Source of Strength: Jesus Himself declared that without Him you can do nothing, and this applies directly to the strength needed to curb evil propensities and bad tempers.

  • Imputed Perfection: After you have done all you can, Christ must still impute His own righteousness to you, because good works alone will never suffice to win eternal life.

  • The Remedy for Self-Reliance: It is only by beholding Christ’s purity and excellence that you can see your own defects and realize that salvation comes through God's infinite grace rather than your own goodness.

  • A Shield Against Deception: Without a vital connection to Jesus, many wrap themselves in a garment of self-righteousness, which is an offense to God and a barrier to the Holy Spirit.

Surrendering the Will to the Divine Worker

Maintaining moral boundaries is not a matter of human grit, but of surrendering the will so that God can work in you.

  • Cooperation, Not Independence: God plans for man to cooperate with Him, but the Holy Spirit only communicates with and empowers those who are doing God’s service in humility.

  • Crucifying Self: To stay within God’s lines, you must crucify self at every step, allowing the Spirit to constantly transform your character, manners, and ways.

  • Trusting the Heavenly Counselor: Finite judgment is foolishness; therefore, you need the Heavenly Counselor at every step to avoid the "short routes" and "cut-off tracks" of a boasted holiness that ignores God’s standard.

  • The Power of His Voice: True sanctification is an entire conformity to the will of God where the voice of Jesus awakens a new life that pervades the entire being.

Practical Christian Help Work as a Safe Guard

Engaging in the work Christ has appointed is a primary way He helps you maintain your spiritual boundaries.

  • Protection Through Service: By engaging in Christian help work—such as caring for the sick, helping the poor, and teaching the unconverted—you are kept in a position where the Holy Spirit can communicate with you.

  • Blessings in Forgetfulness of Self: In unselfish efforts to help others and in the forgetfulness of self, the Lord opens ways for you and provides rich blessings that strengthen your own soul.

  • Reflecting the Divine Image: Daily humbling yourself and confessing individual sins allows you to cooperate with Christ in preparing your soul to reflect the divine image.

  • The Example of Christ: Following the example of Christ in missionary work is the only way to avoid the "midnight darkness" of selfishness and the "filthy rags" of human merit.

Ultimately, any attempt to keep the law or set boundaries apart from the merits of a crucified and risen Saviour is merely a "pharisaical righteousness" that leads to spiritual ruin. You can only reach the people through God, laying hold of His mighty power by living faith John 15:5.
