Understanding the Mystery of God and the Human Sanctuary

Was your body actually designed to be a living temple for God?

What is the mystery of God

AdventAI

The mystery of God is the gospel of Jesus Christ, specifically the wonderful reality of God being manifest in human flesh through the plan of redemption. This divine mystery centers on "Christ in you, the hope of glory," the transformative power that allows a sin-burdened human being to be restored to the image of God Colossians 1:27.

The Definition of the Mystery

The mystery of God is not intended to remain a secret but is a revelation of His will and purpose for the salvation of humanity Ephesians 1:9. It encompasses several sacred truths:

  • The Incarnation: The union of divinity and humanity in Christ, where God was manifest in the flesh to reconcile the world to Himself 1 Timothy 3:16.

  • Christ in the Believer: The "mystery of godliness" is specifically God being manifest in sinful, weak human flesh, enabling the believer to triumph over sin.

  • Inclusion of All People: The truth that the Gentiles are fellow-heirs and partakers of the same promise in Christ through the gospel Ephesians 3:6.

  • The Plan of Redemption: The unsearchable riches of Christ and the wisdom of God revealed through the church to the entire universe Ephesians 3:10.

The Finishing of the Mystery

The "finishing of the mystery of God" mentioned in prophecy refers to the conclusion of the gospel work and the close of human probation Revelation 10:7.

  • Closing of the Gospel: It signifies the end of the proclamation of mercy to the world and the completion of Christ’s priestly ministry in the heavenly sanctuary.

  • Character Transformation: It involves the final manifestation of God’s character in His people, where only God is seen in every act of the believer's life.

  • Historical Timing: This closing work began in 1844 under the sounding of the seventh angel, marking the period of the investigative judgment and the final preparation of a people for the coming of the Lord.

Contrast with the Mystery of Iniquity

While the mystery of God reveals the unselfish love and righteousness of Christ, there exists an opposing power known as the "mystery of iniquity" 2 Thessalonians 2:7.

  • Self-Exaltation: The mystery of iniquity is the manifestation of self and selfishness, characterized by the papacy's historical attempt to hide the true gospel and put itself in the place of God.

  • Final Triumph: The preaching of the final threefold message—the everlasting gospel—is designed to triumph over the mystery of iniquity and seal the people of God with His truth.

Experiencing the Mystery

To truly understand the mystery of godliness, one must move beyond mere theory to a practical, experimental knowledge of the truth. This is achieved through:

  • Obedience and Faith: Following the plain word of truth and keeping the commandments of God from a sense of principle John 14:15.

  • Divine Cooperation: Allowing the Holy Spirit to combine divine power with human effort to produce a Christlike character.

  • Meekness: Approaching God's mysteries with humility, recognizing that finite minds cannot fully fathom the depths of infinite wisdom without divine enlightenment.

In the day soon to burst upon us, these mysteries will be fully seen, all of God's ways will be vindicated, and the redeemed will sing the song of Moses and the Lamb in celebration of this great redemption Revelation 15:3.

Are humans a sanctuary for God to dwell in

AdventAI

Yes, humans were created specifically to be a living sanctuary for the indwelling of the Creator.

God's Original Purpose for Humanity

From eternal ages, it was the Divine purpose that every created being, from the highest angel to man, should be a temple for God’s presence.

  • A Living Temple: The creation of man was nothing less than the building of a temple in which the Lord Himself might dwell and be glorified.

  • The Crown of Creation: As the crown of His work, God formed man to be a habitation where His glory could be revealed.

  • Loss through Sin: Because of sin, humanity ceased to be a temple for God; the heart became darkened and defiled by evil, no longer revealing the glory of the Divine One.

The Human Body as the Temple of the Holy Spirit

The scriptures explicitly identify the human body as a sacred dwelling place for the Spirit of God 1 Corinthians 3:16.

  • Purchased Possession: Humans are the property of Christ by both creation and redemption, having been bought with the infinite price of His blood.

  • A Spiritual Issue: Health is a spiritual matter because our bodies are the temples of the indwelling Holy Spirit; therefore, a well-kept temple honors God.

  • Consecration of Faculties: Every power of our being—our ears, eyes, voice, and physical strength—should be consecrated to God as part of His temple.

  • Care for the Machinery: We are instructed not to overtax the "wonderful machinery" of the body, as we are responsible for taking care of this soul temple.

Restoration Through the Incarnation

The purpose of Heaven that was lost through sin is fulfilled again through the work of Jesus Christ.

  • Christ's Temple of Flesh: By taking on human nature, Christ united humanity with divinity, a divine spirit dwelling in a temple of flesh.

  • Cleansing the Heart: Just as Jesus cleansed the earthly temple in Jerusalem from unholy traffic, He seeks to cleanse the human heart from the defilement of sin, selfish lusts, and evil habits.

  • An Abiding Presence: Through saving grace, the heart of man becomes again a temple where Jesus can abide.

  • Indwelling by Faith: When Christ dwells in the heart by faith, His presence makes the believer holy, fulfilling the high destiny open to every soul.

The Responsibility of the Living Temple

Recognizing that we are God's sanctuary brings a solemn responsibility to maintain holiness 1 Corinthians 3:17.

  • Avoiding Defilement: We are warned that if any man defiles the temple of God, him shall God destroy, for the temple of God is holy 1 Corinthians 3:17.

  • Cleansing the Soul: All human passions, vanities, and ignorance must be cleansed from the "soul temple" so that the grace of God can become an abiding principle.

  • A Constant Witness: The daily life of a Christian should be an expression of the sanctifying power of truth, showing that Christ is abiding in the soul.

  • Individual Accountability: Every individual is responsible for the influence they exert and for keeping their soul temple clean and pure.

It is God's desire to infinitely enlarge the life that is submitted to Him, making it a fit temple for Himself in every respect. "For you are the temple of the living God; as God has said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people" 2 Corinthians 6:16.
