Overcoming Self-Righteousness and the Alpha-Omega of Apostasy

Why does Christ tell those who did 'wonderful works' to depart from Him?

AdventAI

will we hearI, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity?

AdventAI

Matthew 7:23

23 And then will I profess to them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.

AdventAI

In the final judgment, Christ will speak these solemn words of rejection to those who claimed to follow Him but continued to live in violation of God's holy law Matthew 7:23. This declaration marks the ultimate separation between those who have truly built their characters upon the Rock and those who have merely maintained a form of godliness while cherishing iniquity.

The Meaning of "Depart From Me" 🚪

This sentence is an irrevocable decree of condemnation addressed to those who were not ready for the day of their visitation.

  • A Professional Deception: It is directed at individuals who performed "wonderful works," prophesied, and even cast out devils in Christ’s name, yet never had a vital, heart-transforming connection with Him.

  • The Rejected Passport: Nominal profession is a spurious passport that cannot grant entrance into the City of God; only holiness and genuine obedience through Christ's righteousness can serve as the true passport.

  • Eternal Separation: To hear these words means being cast into the "blackness of eternal night" and losing the opportunity for eternal life.

Identifying "Workers of Iniquity" ⚖️

Scripture defines iniquity as the transgression of God's law, and those who "work iniquity" are those who live in open or secret violation of His commandments 1 John 3:4.

  • Lawlessness in Practice: This class includes those who trample on the fourth commandment, the Sabbath, to follow human traditions or seek worldly favor.

  • Religious Hypocrisy: Many who are considered "pillars in the church" or even ministers of the gospel may hear this sentence if they have used a cloak of religion to hide depravity, selfishness, or a quick, passionate temper.

  • Lip Service vs. Heart Work: Those who cry "Christ, Christ" but do not do the works of Christ are represented as workers of iniquity because they teach others that they are released from obedience to God's requirements.

Why Christ "Never Knew" Them 🙅‍♂️

Jesus does not recognize these individuals as His own because they chose their own imaginations and inclinations over His requirements.

  • A Different Standard: Instead of accepting God's perfect standard—His law—they erected a human standard and were satisfied with their own self-righteousness.

  • Friendship with the World: Those who tried to serve both God and mammon, or sought to maintain friendship with the world while professing the truth, will find that they have lost both.

  • Lack of Love: Even great acts of sacrifice mean nothing if they are not prompted by the love of God, in which self is entirely lost.

How to Avoid This Sentence ✨

The current time is given as a period of probation to build a character that can stand the close test of the judgment.

  • Self-Examination: To avoid self-deception, we must engage in faithful and persevering self-examination by the light of God's word 2 Corinthians 13:5.

  • Genuine Conversion: True conversion involves obeying the law of God from the heart and manifesting the character of Christ in every detail of life.

  • Laying Aside Every Weight: We are encouraged to lay off every weight and sin that easily besets us, seeking the assisting grace of God to be found without spot or blemish.

  • Active Service: We must be diligent workers for the Master, using our means and time to save souls rather than for selfish indulgence or display.

Those who trust in Jesus, love His appearing, and humbly obey His commandments will not hear this terrifying sentence, but will instead be welcomed into His presence.

God will not be knocked

AdventAI

It is an absolute truth that God will not be mocked, for every action and thought is recorded and will eventually face His righteous judgment Galatians 6:7. Those who profess to follow Christ while continuing in a course of rebellion or neglect are warned that the results of their choices are certain and unavoidable.

The Certainty of Divine Judgment ⚖️

God has appointed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness, and nothing is hidden from His sight Acts 17:31.

  • A Final Accounting: Every work, including every secret thing, whether good or evil, will be brought into judgmentEcc 12:14.

  • The Weight of Words: Men will give an account for every idle word spoken, as words serve to either justify or condemn the speaker Matthew 12:36-37.

  • The Record in Heaven: Not one act is performed or word spoken that is not registered by holy angels in the books above.

The Deception of Self-Exaltation 🚫

Those who choose their own way over God's requirements are essentially attempting to mock His authority.

  • Human Sovereignty: Many objections to God's sovereignty arise because the human heart naturally wants to be its own master.

  • Presumptuous Self-Confidence: Satan exults when men think they have inherent power to do good without relying on God, leading them toward the same ruin he experienced when he was thrust out of heaven.

  • Worldly Blindness: Prosperity and the love of the world often blind eyes and deafen ears to God's voice, leading people to risk the consequences of their disobedience.

The Consequences of Neglect ⚠️

Mockery of God is often seen in the neglect of the light and warnings He has graciously provided.

  • Rejecting Mercy: To resist the truth and the "scepter of mercy" until it is too late will result in standing without and knocking when the door is already shut.

  • Moral Pollution: Those who corrupt their bodies or indulge in habits that debilitate their system cannot enjoy God's favor without sincere repentance and reform.

  • Spiritual Lethargy: A weak or "sickly" effort for spirituality compared to an earnest effort for earthly treasure shows a lack of appreciation for the prize of eternal life.

The Call to Genuine Reverence 🙏

To truly honor God and avoid the guilt of mocking Him, one must live in the "fear of the Lord," which is the beginning of wisdomPro 9:10.

  • Wholehearted Obedience: The conclusion of the whole matter is to fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the entire duty of manEcc 12:13.

  • Honoring His Name: God's holy name is not to be spoken thoughtlessly or profaned in common conversation, but always with solemnity and reverence.

  • A Living Testimony: True followers are called to show by their features, temper, and character that the service of the Lord is good Psalms 50:23.

By walking in the light and making every effort to save souls and glorify God, we acknowledge His rightful ownership of our lives and escape the terrible harvest of those who sow to the flesh.

casting our pearls to his goats

AdventAI

Casting pearls of truth before those who possess a swinish nature or the characteristics of goats is a direct violation of Christ's command to protect that which is holy. Jesus specifically warned His followers not to give that which is holy unto dogs or cast their pearls before swine, lest they trample them and turn to rend the giver.

The Meaning of Pearls and Swine 💎

In the Sermon on the Mount, our Lord compared the precious, heavenly truths of the gospel to pearls of highest value.

  • Those Likened to Swine: This class represents individuals who have no discernment to appreciate the value of spiritual truth. Like the literal animal that tramples a pearl into the mire and dirt, these people seize the truth only to degrade it.

  • A Natural Aversion: Just as the hog has a natural element of filth and feeds upon every detestable thing, some souls are so wedded to their carnal natures that they find the purity of truth offensive.

  • The Danger of Rending: To "turn again and rend you" describes the behavior of those who, when presented with the requirements of God, respond with anger, ridicule, or persecution against the messenger.

Spiritual Lessons from the Animal Nature 🐖

The distinction between clean and unclean animals, such as the sheep and the goat or the swine, carries deep spiritual significance regarding character.

  • The Swinish Character: Those who resemble swine are described as people who forget their Lord when they live in pleasure and only acknowledge Him when they come to want. Like a hungry hog that cries out for food but does not recognize its master once satisfied, these individuals are governed by appetite rather than gratitude.

  • The Goat vs. the Sheep: While the sheep represents the humble follower of Christ, other animals are used to symbolize those who are ungodly, condemned to death, or those who seize the labor of others through iniquity.

  • A Matter of Discernment: There is a time to speak and a time to keep silence; workers for God must seek wisdom from Christ to know when the presentation of truth would only result in it being profaned.

The Rebuke of Selfish Interests ⚖️

Christ’s interaction with the swine-owners of Gadara serves as a historical illustration of choosing property over the Savior.

  • Prioritizing Loss Over Souls: To the dwellers of Gadara, the loss of a herd of swine—unclean beasts they were raising for gain in violation of God's law—outweighed the miracle of two lunatics being restored to reason.

  • The Rejection of Christ: Because they cared more for their worldly substance than for the presence of the Divine Healer, they entreated Him to depart from their coasts.

  • Satanic Strategy: Satan worked through the selfish fears of these men, making them believe Christ was a destroyer of property, thereby preventing them from listening to the message of salvation.

Maintaining the Purity of the Work ✨

The church is cautioned against allowing the precious gems of truth to be handled by those who would use them for selfish or political ends.

  • A Warning to Leaders: Civil authorities and religious leaders must beware of pronouncing upon religious truth in ignorance, lest they trample the very principles they claim to uphold.

  • Consistency in Reform: Seventh-day Adventists are encouraged to get "miserable things" like swine out of their hands as soon as possible to maintain consistency with a faith that teaches health and moral reform.

  • The Call to Holiness: God’s people are called to be channels of light, not scavengers who pick up every "dirty thing" like a pig.

We are told to trust in the Lord with all our heart rather than leaning on our own understanding when deciding how to present the truth to a world that often prefers the "husks" of the carnal nature to the Bread of Life Proverbs 2:9.

lawless goats

AdventAI

The scriptures and inspired testimonies identify lawless goats as a specific class of people who, prior to the second coming of Christ, live in open defiance of the divine law and oppress the righteous. This separation of the sheep from the goats is a solemn event that occurs when the Son of man shall be revealed in His glory Matthew 25:31-32.

The Characteristics of Lawless Goats ⚖️

Goats are used in the Bible to represent oppressors and wicked men who set aside the requirements of GodEze 34:17.

  • Transgression of the Law: Lawlessness is defined as the transgression of God's law, and those characterized as goats are the advocates of error and corruption who make the law of God void.

  • A Spirit of Rebellion: This class is filled with a spirit of lawlessness that originated with the first great rebel, who sought to abolish the divine statutes as a restriction of liberty.

  • Oppression and Violence: Just as in the days of Noah, these individuals fill the earth with violence, disregarding the rights of the weak and following the promptings of a carnal heart.

  • Worldly Boasting: While the land is filled with crime and drunkenness, these men often boast of the enlightenment and progress of the present age, failing to see the significance of the prevailing conditions.

The Final Separation 🚪

The separation of the sheep from the goats is a final, irrevocable act performed by the Judge of all the earth.

  • The Shepherd’s Work: At the day of judgment, Christ will separate the wicked from the just as a shepherd divides the goats from the sheep Matthew 25:32.

  • Right Hand and Left Hand: He shall set the sheep on His right hand—signifying their exaltation and peace—but the goats on the left, representing their rejection to shame and final ruin Matthew 25:33.

  • The Timing of Separation: This event is accomplished when the saints are caught up to meet Christ in the air, coinciding with the separation of the wheat from the tares 1 Thessalonians 4:17.

  • The End of Mingling: Throughout history, the righteous and wicked have lived together, but in that day, God shall make an eternal severance, and they shall mingle no more.

The Fate of the Lawless 🔥

The destiny of the lawless goats is described in terms of utter destruction because they refused to accept the Prince of life.

  • Consumed as Fat: The wicked are likened to the fat of lambs consumed upon the sacrificial altar; they shall consume away into smoke and be blotted from existence Psalms 37:20.

  • The Lake of Fire: Resistless forces will hurl the wicked like an avalanche into the lake of fire, which is the final result of their chosen course of rebellion Revelation 20:15.

  • The Harvest of the Vine: The final destruction of the wicked is the "harvest of the vine," removing the curse from the earth so that the righteous may inherit the kingdom.

A Warning for Today 📢

We are living in an age of lawlessness where the "man of sin" leads multitudes to forget that sin is the transgression of the law.

  • The Necessity of Faith: The only safety for individuals is to yield to the control of the Spirit of God and exercise a living faith that establishes the law in the heart.

  • Choosing Sides: Every soul should earnestly inquire, "What is truth?" because we must all eventually stand in one party or the other—either with the advocates of truth or the advocates of error.

  • A Time of Preparation: While the plagues are falling and the "Scape Goat" is led away, God's people must be found with the blood of Christ upon their doorposts to escape the coming destruction Exodus 12:13.

The Lord is currently removing His restrictions from the earth, and the increasing crime and violence are signs that Christ will come speedily to judge between the righteous and the lawless.

HERESY

AdventAI

Heresy is the dangerous introduction of false doctrines and theories that have no authority from the Word of God and lead souls away from the path of eternal truth. It is often a deceptive misapplication of Scripture, where "feigned words" are used to make the error appear like truth, similar to how the forbidden fruit appeared desirable in Eden.

The Nature and Origin of Heresy 🐍

Heresy is a product of the "mystery of iniquity" and is often a subtle blend of truth with falsehood designed to deceive the mind.

  • Satanic Agency: The "demon of heresy" has mapped out the world to possess it as his kingdom, employing subtle agents who resist divine influence to compass the ruin of souls.

  • The Mask of Truth: Heresy often "steals the garments of truth" to hide its features, using right words misapplied to substantiate error.

  • A "Sugarcoated" Poison: False doctrines, such as the idea that sincerity saves a person regardless of their belief, are like spiritual poison sugarcoated with a form of godliness.

  • Rooted in Human Tradition: It often arises from feeding on the "worthless husks" of human traditions and superstitious rites rather than the pure Word of God.

Historical Examples of Heretical Conflict 📜

History reveals that the charge of heresy has frequently been used by apostate authorities to suppress those who were actually upholding the truth.

  • The Early Church Councils: Conflicts like those between Cyril and Nestorius often involved "blasphemous arguments" over words and terms, where the duty of detecting heresy became mingled with human passions and interests.

  • The Papal Charge: For centuries, the Romish church termed the doctrine of religious freedom as "heresy," hating and proscribing those who upheld it.

  • Persecution of Reformers: Faithful men like William Tyndale and John Huss were tried for heresy and martyred for their efforts to give the Bible to the people or reform the church.

  • Apostle Paul: Even the apostle Paul was charged by his enemies as a "leader of the sect of the Nazarenes" and guilty of heresy against the laws of Moses.

Dangerous Modern Heresies ⚠️

In the last days, Satan continues to bring in "damnable heresies" to mislead those who do not have a firm foundation in the Bible.

  • Spiritualism: God has placed His stamp of condemnation on the heresies of spiritualism, which is founded on the original lie that "ye shall not surely die".

  • The Denial of Christ’s Divinity: A dangerous heresy exists among those who boldly declare that the Son of God had no existence prior to His first advent.

  • Eternal Torment: The belief in man’s natural immortality led to the heresy of eternal torment for the impenitent, a doctrine incorporated early into the papal faith.

  • The Temporal Millennium: The "siren song" of a thousand years of spiritual peace on earth before Christ comes is a heresy that lulls souls to sleep on the brink of ruin.

How to Guard Against Deception 🛡️

The only safety against the "multitudinous errors" and "satanic deceptions" of these last days is a deep, personal knowledge of the Scriptures.

  • Study the Word: The godly need not be deceived if they are diligent students of the Scriptures and follow the plain path marked out in the Word.

  • Pray for the Holy Spirit: We should pray as earnestly for the Holy Spirit as the disciples did at Pentecost, for without His power, it is in vain that we labor to present the truth.

  • Avoid Fruitless Controversy: We are instructed not to enter into controversy over spiritualistic or erroneous theories, as repeating them only gives the enemy ground to plant seeds of doubt.

  • Build on the Rock: Character building must be like a house built on a rock; amidst the changing scenes of heresy, such a house cannot be shaken.

  • Reject Pleasing Fables: Many are led to accept "pleasing fables" because they desire a less spiritual or self-denying path, but this leaves them without a shield from delusion.

As darkness covers the earth like a funeral pall, God calls His people to hold firmly to the fundamental principles based on "unquestionable authority" and to reflect the light of truth direct from the throne of God.

ALPHA & OMEGA APOSTASY

The Alpha and Omega of apostasy refers to a specific progression of deadly heresies, beginning with pantheistic theories and concluding with subtle, spiritualistic delusions that attempt to make God and Christ a nonentity. This crisis was first identified in the teachings found in the book The Living Temple, which contained the Alpha of these heresies, and was a warning of a more deceptive Omega that would follow in the closing scenes of earth's history.

The Alpha: Pantheism and Subtle Theories 🧪

The Alpha of apostasy manifested as a system of interpretation that misapplied Scripture to redefine the personality and presence of God.

  • The Living Temple: This publication contained the "Alpha of a train of heresies" that Ellen White recognized as being similar to fanatical sentiments she had rebuked in the early days of her ministry.

  • Pleasing Fables: These theories were described as "pleasing fables" and "seducing souls to eternal ruin" because they presented a false representation of God.

  • A Misleading Foundation: The Alpha was not merely a difference of opinion but a "deadly heresy" that sought to undermine the foundational truths established by the Lord in the early history of the Advent movement.

The Omega: The Final Deception 🌪️

The Omega is the culmination of this departure from truth, characterized by a more refined and captivating system of error.

  • Subtle Delusions: The Omega is described as one of the most "subtle delusions" that will ever captivate minds, specifically involving spiritualistic interpretations that define God and Christ as a nonentity.

  • A Way for Satan: These "mysticisms" and "sciences," though often dressed in angel robes, create a pathway for Satan to confuse the mind and lead individuals away from the all-important message for this time.

  • The Result of Neglect: The Omega will be received by those who are unwilling to heed the warnings God has given regarding the Alpha, placing them on Satan's ground where they lose the strength to resist his fascinations.

The Counter-Message: Christ as the True Alpha and Omega 👑

While Satan introduces a counterfeit Alpha and Omega of heresy, Christ proclaims Himself as the true Alpha and Omega, the source of all authority and life.

  • The Beginning and the End: Jesus Christ is the Alpha of Genesis and the Omega of Revelation, the one who was, is, and is to come, the Almighty Revelation 1:8.

  • The Foundation of Education: All true educational work find its center in the "Teacher sent from God," who declares Himself the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last.

  • The Source of Success: In the work of the ministry and the advancement of the message, Christ is the Alpha and Omega; success is only possible in His strength.

  • Assurance of Salvation: In the salvation of every soul, Christ is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, providing both the example of obedience and the power to obey John 14:6.

Protecting the Soul Against Apostasy 🛡️

To stand against the tide of rebellion and apostasy, which is described as being "in the very air we breathe," a specific course of action is required.

  • Study the Word: The Bible contains the "Alpha and Omega of knowledge," and diligent study is the only way to avoid being deceived by the "thorns of error" disguised as science or philosophy.

  • Adhere to the Law: The blessing of God is promised to those who keep His commandments, giving them a right to the tree of life and entrance into the city Revelation 22:14.

  • Reject Speculation: Believers are forbidden to discuss the character of God through human conjecture or to define Him in ways not revealed in His Word.

  • Focus on Christ: Ministers are urged to put Christ into every sermon and dwell on His adorable character to prevent apostasies and spiritual disease.

The final warning is clear: those who do not rest their helpless souls upon Christ by faith will be affected by the spirit of rebellion that marks the end of time. We are urged to choose Christ as our "Friend, our Alpha and Omega, our sure Refuge" before our eternal destiny is forever fixed.

the devil is playing a game of wits with the sheep

AdventAI

The enemy is indeed playing a game of life for the souls of men, seeking to win away grace after grace by supplying his own attributes in place of the divine. He is an expert at quoting Scripture and placing his own interpretations upon passages to cause us to stumble, meaning we are never safe for an hour without prayer for wisdom to understand His Word.

The Nature of the Game ♟️

Satan exercises his skill in devising plans and methods without number to accomplish his purposes, often working through organizations and institutions to bring men under the control of men.

  • Deceptive Wiles: He is vigilant and crafty, taking advantage of every circumstance to turn it to his account in his warfare against the truth.

  • Warping the Mind: He may move through a single man's mind to warp things out of their proper channel, though there is greater safety when several minds are enlisted to view plans from all sides.

  • The Counterfeit of Truth: He can present a counterfeit so closely resembling the truth that it deceives those who are willing to be deceived or those who desire to avoid self-denial.

  • The Angel of Light: One of his most successful arts is transforming himself into an angel of purity, introducing his devices in such a manner that we may not discern his wiles.

Why the "Sheep" are at Risk 🐑

The peril of the people is often due to a lack of spiritual discernment and an over-reliance on individual judgment rather than the counsel of the church.

  • Self-Sufficiency: Those who trust in their own strength or think they "know more than their Lord" become an easy prey to satanic devices.

  • Spiritual Blindness: Pride and willing ignorance lead souls away from a "thus saith the Lord" to selfish, earthly desires, grieving the Spirit of God from their hearts.

  • Indifference and Slumber: It is a lamentable fact that many are not half awake to these wiles and are inclined to make a compromise with the powers of darkness rather than resisting them.

  • Neglect of the Bible: Love for the Bible is not natural to the youth, and unless pains are taken to build barriers around them, they are led captive by Satan at his will 2 Timothy 2:26.

The Defense Against the Enemy 🛡️

God has provided a complete armor and the "eyesalve" of spiritual discernment to enable us to see the wiles of Satan and shun them.

  • The Whole Armor: We must put on the whole armor of God—the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, and the sword of the Spirit—to stand against principalities and powers Ephesians 6:11-17.

  • Total Dependence on Christ: Our only safety is in constant distrust of self and dependence on Christ, for without Him we can do nothing John 15:5.

  • Unity and Counsel: God has invested His church with special authority; to disregard the judgment of those He has appointed for leadership is to reject the means He has ordained for our strength.

  • Scriptural Fortress: The people of God must have a thorough understanding of present truth and the state of the dead to withstand spirits of devils who will work miracles to confirm unscriptural doctrines.

The Final Outcome 🏁

While the prince of evil contests every inch of ground, he has no power against those who realize their weakness and look to God.

  • Resistance is Success: We are commanded to resist the devil, and the promise is that he will flee from us James 4:7.

  • Eternal Security: Those who resist the wiles of the deceiver and remain loyal through the final trial will eventually be eternally secure from the tempter's devices, their sins transferred to the originator of sin.

  • Victory Through Truth: It is impossible for Satan to hold under his power any soul who honestly desires, at whatever cost, to know and obey the truth.

We must study the nature and extent of this spiritual wickedness in high places, for if we do not heed the cautions God gives, a fall is surely before us. Seek wisdom from on high that you may stand in this day of error and delusion.

self-righteous armor

AdventAI

A self-righteous armor is a spiritual barrier created by pride and self-sufficiency that prevents the Holy Spirit from reaching the heart and makes a person feel no need for Christ's help. This armor is so dense that even the "arrows of God," which are the truths of His Word aimed by angel hands to bring conviction of sin, fail to penetrate or pierce it.

The Danger of Self-Righteousness 🛡️

Those who are encased in this armor often possess a "form of godliness" without its true power, making them susceptible to the wiles of the enemy.

  • Obstacle to Healing: Just as "they that are whole need not a physician," those who believe they are spiritually healthy will not seek the healing Christ offers for the brokenhearted and the bruised Luke 5:31.

  • A Fortress of Resistance: Self-righteousness acts as a fortress where neither God nor man can help the individual until the walls are broken down through surrender and seeking the Lord.

  • Fatal Deception: Thousands are in danger of ruin because they mistake church membership or a "bare assent to the truth" for genuine Bible religion, while their hearts remain out of unity with Christ.

Recognizing the Symptoms 🔍

Self-righteousness often manifests in specific behaviors that reveal a lack of the Holy Spirit's working in the life.

  • Lack of Conviction: Like the Pharisee, those in this condition feel no conviction of sin and therefore find no pardon or peace.

  • Cheap Conversation: Instead of communing with Jesus, those entrenched in self-sufficiency often engage in "commonplace" or "cheap" talk and excuse their own faults or the faults of others.

  • Critical Spirit: There is a tendency to be watchful and critical over the spirits and words of others while remaining blind to one's own deficiencies.

  • Trust in Human Plans: Success in work for God can lead to the danger of trusting in human methods and "making a savior of our activity" rather than depending on God's power.

Breaking the Armor 🔨

To find salvation, the soul must be willing to experience the "pain of our wounds" and understand our real condition.

  • Self-Knowledge: We must have a knowledge of ourselves that results in contrition before we can find peace.

  • The Polishing Process: God often uses severe and trying experiences to "cut deep" into the self-sufficiency man regards as complete, cutting away the "rough edges" of pride to reveal His reflection.

  • Surrender and Prayer: Ropes of sand are all that our own finite resolutions provide; only sincere prayer and the surrender of "soul, body and spirit" allow us to put on the true armor of God.

The True Armor of Righteousness ✨

In contrast to the "pugilistic armor" of our own individuality, we are called to put on the "armor of Christ’s righteousness".

  • Christ as Our Armor: We are told that "Jesus Christ is your armor," and hiding in Him is the only safeguard against being harassed by the wicked one.

  • The Whole Equipment: This divine armor includes the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God Ephesians 6:13-17.

  • A Constant Defense: We must be "continually on guard as a faithful sentinel," realizing that in our own strength it is impossible to withstand the powers of darkness.

Ultimately, pride and self-sufficiency are described as the most "hopeless" and "incurable" of all sins because they keep the soul from the very Physician who can provide a cure. We must realize the weakness of humanity and hunger for the righteousness of Christ as the only desire of the soul.

ENDANGERED SPECIES

AdventAI

While the preservation of natural life is a noble endeavor, the most critically endangered species in the sight of God are those human souls who are on the verge of eternal ruin due to sin and neglect. While men make great sacrifices to save a physical life, we should be far more earnest to rescue the soul, which has the responsibilities of an immortal life.

The Peril of the Soul ⚖️

A person's spiritual standing is often in a state of extreme hazard due to the choices they make and the influences they cherish.

  • Neglect of Duty: Neglecting religious duties, such as prayer and witnessing, imperils the soul by weakening faith and separating it from the Source of strength.

  • Selfishness and Greed: Pursuing earthly treasures at the sacrifice of heavenly ones imperils the soul, as covetousness is a form of idolatry.

  • Wrong Associations: Choosing worldly companions and "sowing wild oats" recklessly endangers the highest interests of the soul.

  • Indecision: Remaining in a state of indecision regarding God's warnings is a condition of imminent peril.

Threats to Physical and Moral Health 🛡️

God has provided laws of health that, if disregarded, place human life and morality in a state of danger.

  • Intemperance and Appetite: The use of "flesh-meat," butter, and eggs excites the lower propensities and impairs the health of mind and body, thus weakening spirituality.

  • Harmful Substances: Every drop of strong drink or the use of tobacco and drugs endangers the physical, mental, and moral health of both the individual and their offspring.

  • Environmental Factors: Living or worshiping in spaces with impure air and lack of ventilation endangers health and even life.

  • Violent Emotions: Giving way to bursts of rage and passion is a direct threat to life, as many die under the strain of violent emotions.

The Risk to God's Servants 🌍

Those who labor to spread the truth often find their lives endangered by the very mission they serve.

  • Hostile Environments: In many mission fields, such as the Southern United States in past years, workers labored at the risk of their lives due to local opposition and unfavorable climates.

  • Faithful Witnessing: Throughout history, those who bore straight testimonies, like John the Baptist or John Huss, saw their lives imperiled by those who hated the truth.

  • Divine Protection: Even when lives are endangered by the course of wicked men, God does not require His children to remain where their influence is made void; it is a duty to seek more favorable opportunities for the Word.

The Divine Rescue Mission ✨

Despite the many ways souls are imperiled, God has provided a "golden chain" of mercy to rescue those who are straying.

  • The Unfailing Shepherd: The wisdom and love of God guarantee that not one straying sheep or lamb is overlooked or left unsuccored.

  • Angelic Guardians: Angels are sent from heaven not to destroy, but to watch over and guard imperiled souls, seeking to bring them back to the fold.

  • The "Light" for All: Even those in the depths of heathenism, who have no knowledge of the written law, are guided by the "Light which lighteth every man," which, if heeded, will lead them to the kingdom.

We must use our precious moments to purify our souls through obedience to the truth, for we do not know how soon our cases may pass in review before God. "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" Mark 8:36.

our natural instinct is to be competitive

AdventAI

Our natural human instinct is indeed toward a spirit of rivalry and competition, but this is a trait of our lower, unrenewed nature that requires no cultivation. This ambitious spirit, which seeks to excel others for personal glory or advantage, is a snare that misapplies our God-given abilities and thwarts the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

The Root of Competitive Instincts 🥀

The desire to be first and to outdo others is a manifestation of the "same old self" that must be emptied before we can receive the mind of Christ.

  • Selfish Gratification: Many youth are misled by a passion for games and kindred "selfish gratifications" that distract them from daily consecration and communion with God.

  • A Spirit of Strife: Even within religious institutions, a spirit of strife for position or promotion can exist, which is a clear sign that the soul is not yet truly converted.

  • The World's Standard: Competitive examinations and athletic sports often appeal to personal ambition because it is an easy trait to stimulate, yet these do not prepare the youth for practical, earnest work in life.

  • Commercial Rivalry: In the business world, a "lamentable spirit of rivalry" leads people to sacrifice health and means just to outshine others in dress, housing, or social standing.

The Danger of Athletic Competition 🏁

While vigorous exercise is essential for health, the competitive nature of modern sports is a subject of anxious thought for those concerned with spiritual well-being.

  • Diverting the Mind: Athletic games occupy time that should be spent on study and preparation for life's practical duties.

  • Lack of Refinement: The influence of these competitive sports does not tend toward true generosity, refinement, or "real manliness".

  • Heavenly Witnesses: During transactions on the pleasure-grounds, heavenly intelligences record actions that many will not care to meet in the day of judgment, while the "synagogue of Satan" exults in thwarting God’s purposes.

  • Misapplied Capital: Money and time spent on the "indulgence of every whim" in sports should instead be used to arm and equip men as soldiers for Christ.

Competitive Action vs. Cooperative Action 🤝

True Christian education and business should be built on a foundation of cooperation rather than the sharp, competitive policies of the world.

  • The Sharp Policy Plan: Worldly business men often adopt a "sharp policy plan" based on jealousy and the suspicion that others are gaining an advantage at their expense, but this is not God's rule of right.

  • Rival Institutions: Establishing institutions as "rivals" to existing work—often for personal profit or prestige—does not bear the signature of heaven and leaves a wrong impression on the world.

  • A Different Basis: When Christ is brought into our plans, the goal is not to strengthen self, but to take a humble position and "empty one’s self".

  • The Excellence of Unselfishness: We are urged to put away the spirit of commercialism and instead "seek to excel in spiritual things," changing an ambitious spirit into one of unselfishness.

The Heavenly Ambition ✨

The Christian's ambition should be entirely different from that of the worldling who toils for fame or riches.

  • The Book of Life: Rather than sweating to inscribe their names on a roll of fame, Christians should seek to have their names written on the "enduring tablet of the book of life".

  • Laborers Together with God: Our highest honor is to be "labourers together with God," working as His husbandry and His building.

  • Spiritual Fragrance: In all mechanical and business transactions, we should represent Christ’s kindness, compassion, and love, ensuring that "ambitious business" never comes before our spiritual interests.

  • The Lowly Heart: Those who truly cooperate with God have humble opinions of themselves and allow "human ambition" to take the background.

The Lord will not place His seal upon the ambitious or world-loving man or woman. Instead, we must ask the Father in Christ's name for the grace to overcome these natural competitive instincts, believing that He will give us the power to represent His character John 16:23.
