Happy Sunday! 📖 It is a blessing to study this week's lesson, "A Portrait of Love," with you today. 😇 Since it is Sunday, August 9, we are focusing on "The Essentialness of Love," exploring why this divine grace is the foundation of the Christian life. 🙏

The Foundation of All Spiritual Gifts

Today we are learning that even the most impressive spiritual gifts are completely hollow without the presence of divine love 1 Corinthians 13:1-3. Paul explains that eloquence, prophetic insight, and even mountain-moving faith profit us nothing if they are not driven by charity 1 Corinthians 13:2. We might perform great acts of benevolence or even sacrifice our lives, but if love is not the motivating power, these deeds are considered worthless in the sight of God 1 Corinthians 13:3. This type of love is not just a human emotion or a passing sentiment; it is a permanent power and a living principle that we drink in from the cross of Calvary. When this love is the ruling principle of our being, it controls every emotion and directs all our energies toward the service of Christ.

A Spirit-Bestowed Grace

This agape love is a Spirit-bestowed grace that must be manifested in our daily deeds and words. It is described as a "more excellent way" because it is the bond of perfectness and the very essence of God's character 1 John 4:8. Unlike natural affection, which might favor only a few, Christ bids us to love one another just as He has loved us John 13:34. This love is a vitalizing energy that touches every part of our being—the brain, the heart, and the nerves—with healing power. It is only by maintaining a living connection with God that we can possess this resistless, heaven-born love.

A Solemn Warning for the Last Days

We must take seriously the warning Jesus gave regarding the time in which we live Matthew 24:12. Because iniquity abounds in the world today, the love of many professed followers of Christ is waxing cold Matthew 24:12. This spiritual declension happens when believers do not stand clear of the prevailing iniquity or when they allow the love of the world to wean their hearts from prayer. In these perilous times, it is a positive duty for us to cultivate Christlike love and respect for ourselves as His purchased possession. We are called to be doers of the word, revealing the character of Christ through a life of holy purpose and disinterested love.

Reflections for Study

As you study today, consider these points to deepen your experience:

  • Love as a Motive: Are your service and spiritual activities motivated by a genuine interest in the welfare of others, or are they merely a form of godliness?

  • The Test of Discipleship: Remember that obedience to God's commandments is the true test of our love for Him John 14:15.

  • A Daily Goal: Let it be your aim to represent the character of Christ, for "God is love," and whoever dwells in love dwells in God 1 John 4:16.

Would you like to explore specific ways to manifest this love in your home or church, or should we look closer at a specific verse from 1 Corinthians 13? 😇📖
